My wife and I go regularly to The Star either for lunch or dinner. The lunch menu changes monthly and it is always delicious and great value. I have posted numerous reviews on The Star, all complimentary but our lunch this week was especially tasty. I had the braised pig cheek to start and the Hodgson's Coley as a main-this came with a Bombay potato terrine and a puree of curried cauliflower, absolutely delicious!

Me and my boyfriend went for dinner at the star this week and were so impressed.
All staff were wearing masks and visors which was very reassuring.
All tables were very well spaced out and if they weren’t there were screens between them. This restaurant felt very Covid safe.
The food was incredible, they gave out homemade warm bread rolls which was a lovely touch.
All of the waiting staff were incredibly friendly. We would definitely recommend to come here to anyone near!

We as a family started getting take out steak pies from The Star before Christmas, we have since been every weekend for more and as well as us I now have my work colleagues and mine and my wife’s parents buying them on a regular basis.
Without doubt the best steak pies we have ever tasted.
On top of this the fruit crumble and Yorkshire Parkin deserts we have sampled have been sublime.
Ben and Lindsey are very welcoming on collection and spend time to speak to my children when we are collecting,
If you haven’t tried the steak pies yet then do it!

From beginning to end, we felt like an inconvenience to the staff who were incredibly surly and slow and made for an unpleasant experience. Our meals took an age to arrive and ordering a round of drinks was like getting blood out of a stone. The food was nice, but didn’t offer value for money and the poor service marred the whole experience. Very disappointed.

We dined here post lockdown, and initially were not disappointed. The limited menu offered plenty of choice, restaurant well set out to abide by social distancing measures where possible. The food was delicious, enjoyed every course, waitresses were fantastic and very attentive. However sat down in the bar to enjoy a final drink after our meal, only for the Manager/Chef to sit on the table next to us, open a bottle of wine with staff and talk rather loudly. A young female waitress walked past him, and he spoke so rudely and arrogantly to her, enjoyed watching her squirm as she didn't know the answers to questions he was asking her, and quite obviously embarrassed her in front of paying customers!! Really has put me off returning.

Visited The Star twice in the last three weeks, ordered scallops on both occasions, the first time i got three lovely plump scallops and the second time we received two very small ones. We asked the waitress clearing the table why this was to which she replied I don’t know but did you enjoy it, which we replied yes, her further response was well that’s all that matters then whilst laughing, bearing in mind it was around £13. On both occasions the service has been friendly but nobody ever comes to your table and asks if you want more drinks, we had to find someone every time. The main courses were more enjoyable on the first visit than the second and when mains are around £26 you expect a taste sensation however this was not the case and they were fairly bland. Deserts……… Yorkshire Parkin and crème brûlée enjoyable and tasty. Banana and dark chocolate cake desert was basic, bland and dry. This was for a special occasion and the whole family came away feeling disappointed.

Just had one of, if not the worst restaurant experience in my life at the star in sanction. We were shown to our table early as there is nowhere to have pre meal drinks, we were then given warm bread rocks, which we could have played cricket with,we asked not to be rushed yet our pre ordered starters arrived 5 minutes before the actual table booking time, at least the starters were nice and everyone happy.
We had to pre order our food, so when the mains were brought to the table there was a meal missing which had to be cooked, ok we wasn’t charged for the mistake, we had four steaks on the table, three which were not cooked as ordered, and mine in particular was almost raw, I could see when it arrived it wasn’t right, there was no colour on the meat and was Luke warm at best, on cutting into the steak it was very under done, I complained and was promised a replacement which is fine but not ideal as the rest of our party were eating their meals, after a few minutes my order was brought back to me, unbelievably my original steak had arrived back, very rubbery and tough, so I assume it had been microwaved. I complained and my meal was removed from the bill.
I am totally flabbergasted, dismayed and angry with the star, how can a restaurant of this nature get it so wrong, admittedly we were given apologies but no offers of compensation, when you are charging £34 for a steak it should be absolutely perfect, which it was when had the same dish over Easter, hence why I chose this again. Thankfully I had great company to deflect how bad an evening I had and I’m afraid it will be a long long time before I return to the star.

Visited recently with family including my just turned three year old. Food was really good and such a lovely atmosphere. But what stood out for me as mum was the service and extra touches. Waitresses were lovely and interacted with my little one who thought it was wonderful. When her food came the plate was not hot as you get in some places and she can’t have it near her. It also meant the food wasn’t piping hot and we had to wait for ages for it to cool enough for her it was hot but a few little blows to cool and was perfect. Thank you all for such a fantastic and stress free evening!

Excellent meal on Saturday Evening, restaurant and staff very Covid aware, all tables have perspex screens between without feeling intrusive.
Food was excellent, service very good, attentive without being overbearing.
Definitely worth a visit.
Will be back

My wife and I celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary with a meal at the Star, Sancton. Covid precautions were still in place but didn't encroach into the evenings event. Our selected meals were nicely presented on the plate and tasted delicious, delivered to our table by a friendly and very helpful staff. A lovely evening to remember celebrating a landmark anniversary in our lives. Thankyou to the Star.

Excellent food and good value, the fish starter, pork and duck mains were tasty.
The sweet of ginger cake and ginger ice cream was very moorish. It's great to have such great food on our door step.

Another visit today. We don’t go often but when we do it never disappoints. The quality of the food is fabulous. The staff are always very friendly and the service is excellent. Somebody is doing a great job recruiting and training the staff in both the kitchen and the restaurant because the quality of the food and the service is consistently very, very good and that isn’t easy to achieve. The draught beer is well kept too!

Starters were dressed crab and braised pig cheek followed by steak and ale pie and the venison on the specials.
Dressed crab was beautiful. Very fresh and delicate balance of flavours. Could not fault.
Braised pig cheek was very good. Again a great balance of flavours and textures.
Venison was perfectly cooked and extremely tender and such good balance of flavours again. The chef really knows their stuff.
The pie is the best we’ve ever had. Loads of flavour, fully packed and a challenge to finish although the gravy could be improved and the red cabbage was a little overly sharp and detracted a little from the flavour of the pie.
Desserts were the crème brûlée and the treacle tart. Both were excellent.
Service was extremely good from the more senior staff. Very friendly and attentive, however (and this is our only criticism) the more junior staff need a little more support in how they approach the table. We were the last sitting and we were asked if we’d finished when we were still clearly eating our dessert at 21:30. Then rather than asked if we’d like anything else, we were asked if they could collect our glasses which was clearly a hint they’d like us to leave.
We would definitely return.

A poignant visit to The Star at Sancton today. Last visited over 3 years ago when my beloved mum was still with us.
Visited with my partner and his mum. We'd booked a table (this is a must) and arrived to see a full car park and plenty of people inside.
The welcome was very warm and all the staff are immaculately dressed and friendly. Drinks were ordered at the table and the menus are extremely varied. We had the choice of a set menu, specials of the day, plus the main menu.
My partner opted for the set menu, whilst 'us ladies' chose the haddock and chips. Everything was beautifully presented and excellently cooked.
If you want 'ding ding, cheap and cheerful ' this is not the place for you. If you want a real treat with lovely surroundings, attentive/happy staff and fabulous food, then get yourself a table booked.
We spent £100 for 1 x 3 course meal, 2 x huge haddock n chips, a delicious pudding, 2 rounds of drinks and a coffee. As they say 'you get what you pay for'.
All in all, it's great to see that 'when things are done right', it pays off.
Well done to all at The Star fo getting it right!! We will definitely be back.

We visited in July for a family birthday and the food and service were excellent. We all had a different main meal from duck, lamb and the huge pie and everyone thought it was excellent.
My husband and I had the Yorkshire lunch yesterday and again it was beautifully cooked and presented and such good value £25 for 3 courses.
The place is lovely and the staff are so friendly and helpful we will definitely be back it’s a real gem.
