We were able to book parking prior to our visit to family in Plymouth and found the staff to be quick in responding to emails. The car park is at the back of the pub and there was pnety of space when we arrive about midday and booked a meal for the evening. It is great spot to start and finish a walk around Princetown and we enjoyed a peaceful night's sleep before leaving the next morning. The food was excellent and we were made to feel very welcome despite the restrictions in place at present due to coronavirus. Guidance to maintain social distancing was nice and clear. The Jail Ale was great but there is a great range of beers to select from. Would definitely visit again.

A massive deluge flooded the Prince of Wales last Thursday 13th August. Despite the damage done inside the owners have fought back by installing an outside bar and a burger van. They have also erected shelters over the outdoor seating to protect the customers.

Ordered a chicken bacon and cheese and a burger bacon and cheese. Excellent pub grub. Just what we needed after a day cycling. Really tasty burger and chicken burger. Found out they were flooded out a few days ago so main pub closed but they had gone to great effort to reopen and serve food. Which was amazing. The portion sizes were massive and neither of us could finish despite our best efforts! Staff were really friendly and helpful. It was packed at the plume, but this place is overlooked! And really worth a visit.

We booked in advance a Sunday lunch and went so far as to also pre-order what we were having. We arrived 10 minutes before the time. We waited at the bar and after 5 minutes or so were seated. And then nothing. We waited for 20 minutes and went to the bar to check how it worked because we had not been told it wasn’t table service when we sat down and we had pre ordered and they knew we had arrived. So we assumed we didn’t have to do/say anything. And then we waited. And waited. No one came to tell us food was delayed. I asked if everything was okay with our food and was told ‘yes’. We waited an 1 hour and 20 minutes with a 7 month old baby and not once were we approached by any member of staff to let us know what was happening. It was busy yes, but what was the point in booking a table or pre-ordering? Our baby got restless and we did our best to keep him calm as he was understandably hungry and tired. When food came it was disappointing, but we were starving so we ate. The meat was tough and tepid. The roast potatoes were also tough and full of oil (I couldn’t eat them and broccoli was almost puréed. Huge parsnips we’re good though. We had a half apology when food was served with excuses as to being busy, but by this point we were starving and had been ignored for over an hour. The pub was lovely and clean and clearly a firm favourite with how busy it was. So sad to say we had a terrible lunch and experience. It is my partner’s birthday today and it really left us with a disappointing end to the day.

We stumbled on this pub by accident! Everything else was closed and this was the last choice. We have both spent a lifetime eating in pubs and restaurants all over the world. The food was absolutely outstanding. It was freshly prepared and cooked form scratch with beautiful ingredients. The home cooked pie was something to die for with a perfectly baked shortcrust pastry (difficult to do). We were both blown away by the standard and the reasonable price. The staff were all very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The pub has a military theme as a number of veterans live locally and this was much fun. In the corner was a very welcoming log burner. As a health care worker my standards of cleanliness are extremely high and I wasn't disappointed. The pub has just opened for bed and breakfast and the rooms are clean, fresh and welcoming. It's a very nice stay if you are planning a long hike over Dartmoor or just a late afternoon or evening visit. We'll definitely be visiting again very soon.

We were staying locally at the Two Bridges Hotel and decided to try this pub for a bite to eat one evening. We found the people really welcoming and the food was absolutely delicious at a great price! Our 3 evening meals with drinks were just over what one evening meal, without drinks, would’ve been at the hotel. We enjoyed it so much, we returned for the next 2 evenings as well. The decor was nice and bright but still with that country cottage feel. We can thoroughly recommend the fish and chips, Hunters chicken, surf and turf and loaded nachos. If we are ever in the area again, we will definitely be visiting again and would highly recommend it to others.

Homemade steak and ale pie, chicken pie and hunters chicken were very tasty, as well as their chips. Booking is recommended as can get busy. At time of this review, it is the only pub open and serving food all day long, in the village. A good atmosphere and staff are friendly.

We have just got back from our 4 night break in the Dartmoor National Park. We stayed at the Prince of Wales in one of their twin family rooms and we cannot fault this fantastic accommodation from the minute we arrived until we left we was made very welcome by all the fantastic staff big shout out to John and Jan. The food was absolutely on point every single night we ate here all 4 nights they even accommodated my daughters food allergies to wheat and dairy, there was an option every night for her . Breakfast was also part of the deal again this was also extremely well cooked. Finally another big plus we was able to take our dog with us for his first holiday as they are a dog friendly pub. Five stars highly recommend anyone who wants to visit the beautiful national park stays here !!!!

We heard good things about this pub so after a long walk we were looking forward to a Sunday roast (which we booked the day before and were told yes definitely there would be a roast) so we got there at 2 only to be told it was sold out 😒 we were disappointed. So we had food from the menu, my partner had steak, unfortunately it was chewy, I had lamb chops which were nice and my daughter had lasagne and she said that was nice. Just a warning for anyone with babies that there is not a changing area as my daughter had to change her baby on a window sill behind the toilet, very awkward.

From the moment we arrived the landlord made us very welcome, the service was excellent along with the real ale. The choice of food on the menu is made from all excellent local ingredients and is very tasty with good size portions. All in all an excellent Inn for good beer and lovely food...highly recommended.

The Princetown Group of the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship held their annual General Meeting on Thursday March 17th which everyone knows is St Patrick's Day.. The Prince is the regular meeting place for the group every month buy an Annual General Meeting only occurs once a year so the members insist on Dining after the meeting. Michael, the Prince of Wales Chef, recognising the importance of the day, laid on an excellent Irish Menu. The choices were superb and everyone of the attendees declared that their meal was excellent without fail. The only grumble was the size of the portions which was soon resolved by the provision of Take Away boxes. Once again the Prince of Wales Hotel kitchen provided an excellent meal. In addition, as always, the bar staff were first class and the Ales were superb. Thank you to all of the staff for creating a wonderful gourmet experience yet again.

There were 13 of us meeting family from abroad ( it was our first time ever meeting them). When we arrived we were greeted with profuse apologies that they were short of staff so to please bear with them. This did not spoil the evening at all with just a little common sense to take the orders to them instead of them coming to us. The food was amazing and not too badly priced at all, I thought we would pay double what we actually did. We had a couple of small children with us who were finding it a little difficult to sit still but the whole pub had such a lovely friendly atmosphere and people were playing with them as they walked past. Our visiting relatives said how lovely the pub had been and we all had a brilliant evening !

Very friendly welcome from behind the bar. Looks as if it has been refurbished recently. A fair few customers were seated many were eating and this all helped to give the pub a lovely atmosphere. I understood from speaking to a staff member they have the chef and most of the staff from the Plume of Feathers which has closed in the last couple of years. The food was excellent as I would have expected being as it always was in the Plume of Feathers.

Fab pie and chips, loads of gravy. Busy with locals and visitors but table found for us by the kitchen with the dog she was very happy smelling all the food. Had the local Dartmoor Jail Ale and Dartmoor Dragon both lovely bought both from the brewery later. Decor has changed considerably since last down before lockdown and really felt happy going in.

We always visit this pub during our stays on Dartmoor but unfortunately it is getting progressively worse each time. Perhaps because the other Princetown pub has been shut for a long time they’ve let the standards slip as they now have a monopoly. Attended twice this time, once for a pint and once for food. Firstly, it isn’t very welcoming at all. You don’t feel like the owner or the locals really want you around in their pub and they make sarcastic comments about where you are from etc. Secondly, I ordered a Guinness and it was an absolutely terrible pour. They need to train their staff on how to deliver a decent pint because it’s their job. When we attended for our food the first issue was that we ordered drinks and some of us got them but we were told the other would be brought over. It never arrived and we had to remind them quite a while later, at which they proceeded to check the till rather than offering any sort of apology. It was their fault after all and not ours. My food was OK but one of our group had pork which was mainly just fat, not that anyone bothers to ask how your meal is. We asked if we could order deserts 3 times over the space of half an hour before someone actually bothered to take our order, again without any apology for the wait. I’d understand if it was busy, but it wasn’t and as we always go during the quiet season, you think they’d make more of an effort to ensure they keep visitors coming during the winter. We will return to Princetown but I’m not sure I will return to the Prince of Wales unfortunately.
