We loved loved loved having lunch at River Exe Cafe! Best dining experience in ages. Food was lovely and the service was brilliant but it's just generally gorgeous and a lovely day out. The sun was shining and we sat outside and it felt like...we were on holiday. I especially loved that they sold non-alcoholic wine by the glass which is a rarity. It's not cheap, so I think given the prices the price of the water taxi really should be included but either way we had a great time and we will be back whenever we can book a table again (which is no mean feat as it's so popular!)More

A really pleasant surprise! We were given a visit to the Cafe by our daughter as a present, and took up the offer soon after it opened for the season. A pleasant boat trip of about 15 minutes out to the Pontoon and the restaurant...gave us a chance to chat to our companions for the first sitting, and a couple of the staff on their way to work. Our table gave us a nice view out to Star Cross on the other side of the estuary from Exmouth. Service was good and the food excellent. I had Squid in Panko breadcrumbs for a starter and my wife had Chicken Liver Terrine. For our mains we had Hake with Leaks, while she had a Thai Fish Curry. Full up, we didn't have desert, although they looked good as they passed. The only fault I could find was a Non-alcohol wine I had with my starter, which didn't go down well, but it was balanced by a proper Chenin Blanc with the main that went down a treat! A very worthwhile trip for anyone who enjoys good food, and something a little different.....More

I went with my partner for a birthday treat, despite the worst weather the whole experience was out of this world! The food was amazing, fresh, tasty, beautifully presented. The ambience was relaxed and comfortable and the staff were incredibly attentive and fun. A special...shout out to Grace and Heather who were brilliant throughout the meal. I can’t recommend this place highly enough and hope to visit again soon.More

The adventure started on ‘Cormorant’ the little water taxi, great fun and smooth crossing. Greeted at the door and shown to our seats. Lovely atmosphere and staff. The sharing platter was delicious, ultra fresh beautifully presented. Lovely to see new member of staff being supported...and helped by the others, not just left to get on with it! ‘Cormorant ‘ arrived on time and took us back to reality! The whole experience was special and one we will remember each anniversary! Thank you River ExeMore

What with the 20min ride in the water taxi to get there, it began with an adventure for the 5 of us. The welcome, was friendly and professional, the service first class, and the food, well, the braised beef cheek was off the scale in...flavour, and it was a large portion! Crab claws were excellent, the sea bream also, we will be visiting next year for sure.More

Our second time and just as fantastic as our initial visit. Food was excellent and as we all had something different that was even more amazing. Because you only get two hours you need to be aware that the level of staff interaction can be...limited as the clock is ticking. That is not a criticism as the service was fast, efficient and professional…you just don’t get the chatting that you might get if you weren’t on a limited timescale. All in all a wonderful experience. As a side note, three parties brought dogs along so they must be allowed into the restaurant.More

It’s been on my wish list for a while. We’d heard it was very difficult to secure a table but we were fortunate in being offered a cancellation. The whole experience is just so good - from the water taxi ride from Exmouth docks out...to the River Exe floating cafe. Probably helped that it was a gorgeous sunny afternoon to enjoy dining at an Al fresco table overlooking the beautiful Exe estuary. The menu is understandably fish focussed (although there are meat and veggie options). We were able to review the current menu on the water taxi ride out so were able to order immediately. We chose the sharing Fisherman’s platter: scallops, king prawns, fat mussels, pink bream, new potatoes, samphire with an extra side of chips. A huge platter and just so good. A starter is really not needed! Delighted to find local Sharpham’s vineyard white wine on the menu & this matched very well with seafood. The staff serving us were all delightful and friendly. Can’t wait to visit again but may have to wait until it opens again next March as due to close at the end of September. Highly recommend.More

I am so often disappointed by the quality to price ratio of seafood in this country. But my expectations were quite high for the River Exe Cafe, as some of my fellow diners are trusted foodies. Firstly be prepared to book way in advance. We...booked this lunch a year ago. The water taxi to the floating barge that houses the cafe takes about 15-20 minutes and costs (I think) £10 return. It was a lovely day, the sea was calm, and the views of Dawlish Warren and the Exmouth foreshore were splendid. I had already decided I wanted the Neptune's platter, a massive plate of whole lobster, crab claws, shell on prawns, pickled cockles, crevettes, steamed mussels and clams, rollmop herrings, marinated octopus, oysters, samphire, buttered new potatoes and sourdough, avocado, pickled onion slivers, served with two gorgeous homemade mayonnaises. It was £120, which sounds expensive, but it was very generous and my sister-in-law and I barely managed to finish it. But above all, it was the quality that was so impressive. I've often been let down by lobster but this was quiveringly tender and moist. I was pleased to see underrepresented octopus. The pickled cockles were grit-free and had an addictive, slightly sweet aniseedy flavour. I only have two caveats and they are very small. Firstly our server was quite aggressive in her efforts to upsell. She asked if we wanted a starter while we waited for our platter but we said no (trying not to spend too much money!). "Are you sure?" she persisted. "The platter takes a while." But we stuck to our guns and were glad because the Neptune's platter involved so much food. She also tried to persuade us to add Exmoor caviar for an extra £35. The second mild caveat was that people who order one of the platters will probably take a lot longer to eat it than people who order one main dish, as was the case at our lunch. Four of us shared two Neptune's platters and the other three had standalone fish dishes, which they finished way before we had finished our platters. So diners need to aware of this. The non-platter people had nothing but praise for their dishes too but in terms of presentation and luxury they didn't come near the Neptune's platter. Some people have complained that sittings are limited to two hours but I found this to be plenty of time, and we were forewarned. Perhaps this only applies to customers using the water taxi; some diners came on their own boats. The cafe has various levels and spaces; a covered indoor area, outdoor seating with umbrellas, rooftop dining with the best views (and subject to a surcharge I believe) and casual wooden benches where you can have a drink and admire the view. If you want a special meal, which is such good quality you don't mind shelling out, then I strongly recommend River Exe Cafe.More

Just the most wonderful visit. From the water taxi, to the service, the quality of the food, and the setting, the River Exe Cafe delivers in spades! Had booked last year so we had very much been looking forward to this birthday visit and it...exceeded all expectations. Felt like we were on holiday (weather was playing ball for once) and we ate so well. Scallops, hake, petit fours. Mushroom pate, fish and chips and a coffee for my boyfriend. All utterly delicious. Big portions too! Thanks a million to you all, even our lovely waitress who took the time to chat about other potential eating spots in the area.More

I went to this restaurant while visiting my friend in Devon. She couldn’t believe we managed to get a reservation as you normally have to book months in advance. We managed to get a cancellation. It’s a wonderful experience from start to finish. From getting...the water taxi to there, to eating and to getting the water taxi back. We had a three course meal on there with a soft drink. You must expect to pay high prices for the food on the menu but it is worth it if you are celebrating a special occasion. The service was so good, they made sure we were happy all the way through our time at the table. My friend has a vinegar allergy and they did everything they could to make sure she did not miss out on anything and replaced everything they could with something my friend could eat. The fish and chips was so good, very hot and fresh, an enormous piece of fish with lots of chips. When I go back to Exmouth I want to go there again as it is such a special place to eat.More
