We were on the hunt for a proper farmhouse breakfast and landed on the Downhouse cafe after covering much of dorset. I must admit we couldn’t really find many pictures of the full English online, but from the reviews which were glowing, the pictures of the setting and the bits of breakfast we could see, it looked like a winner. Turning up to the Downhouse, you follow a little country lane, (cross your fingers you don’t meet anyone coming up as it’s not easy to reverse back) which leads out and down to the house itself and the surrounding fields. There’s a decent amount of parking and I would recommend if you’re going for breakfast to get there early, if you’re trying to park (otherwise you may be disappointed and have to turn back around). The Downhouse is just across from the car park down a little flower and leaf covered lane where you stand to be seated. For a farmhouse I think they have an excellent seating and ordering system, with the tables outside and esssntially a front desk facing from the house itself. If you’re not in for a full English there’s a really lovely assortment of cakes and other breakfast items. The outside dining area where we sat is lovely with parasols shielding from the sun. It’s a really relaxing setting and you really feel immersed in nature. The staff were so welcoming and kind, really calm considering they mentioned they were quite understaffed with only 4 people working the day we came (one of those being the chef). Despite this our coffees and teas arrived really quickly and the food shortly after. The full English does not come with beans, which we were surprised at but happy To pay the extra to have them. 2 of us had the large full English and one small one. The price difference for the small one is probably a bit too expensive considering the large has a considerable amount of food more for only a pound extra. The breakfasts are £11 and £12 respectively for small and large breakfasts. For the small I’d reasonably like to pay about £9 -£9.50 because while it was amazing, the size difference doesn’t warrant the price. Everything is fresh, local and lovely. A really hearty breakfast. The large breakfast as the name suggests is quite large, so take heed! It’s worth noting that they accept card (not AMEX) which we were pleasantly surprised by because we forgot to bring cash! Overall, it’s just perfect. If I lived in the local area Id be making regular trips, perfect for families, dog friendly and amazing food. This is at the top of our list for breakfast in the area and worth a visit if you’re nearby!!! (Also side note, please ignore this ridiculous 3 star review below, we’re still in Covid times and the staff are doing an excellent job, especially on the day we visited as they were understaffed)

The paths around these parts are dire at the moment, so we did our walk and then drove to this wonderful spot. Warning: you won’t find much in the way of parking and the lane is very narrow. We got such a warm welcome from all of the staff and had some delicious food: Bubble & Squeak, Butternut Soup and a shared cream tea. All were excellent. The scones are huge, there is no way I could have eaten two in my own. For such a small place there is a pretty big menu of hot and cold food, with plenty of veggie options when we visited. There is only outside seating, but it is covered so will shelter you from rain but could be chilly on a cold day.

We thoroughly enjoyed our delicious lunch in the pretty courtyard garden. The quality of the food and the warm welcome explains why this place is so often fully booked despite its somewhat remote location. We particularly enjoyed the Garlic Mushrooms with Blue Cheese and the Crab Bap, and the prices were very reasonable for such excellent quality. We will definitely return when we are next in the area.

We parked our cars at Eype Beach ready for the hike to the farm for lunch. The sign at this point indicated the cafe is open everyday apart from Mondays, except bank holiday Mondays. After a long slog we arrived at the cafe to find it closed - only open Thursdays to Sundays. Hot, tired, hungry & thirsty we returned to our cars. We weren’t the only disappointed customers either, 2 couples with young children & a couple in a car arrived in the 5 minutes that we were there. Couldn’t someone from the cafe have at least changed or amended the cafe sign ar notified the attendant at Eype car park of the change in hours? We didn’t think to double check the website before setting out……At least the walk was lovely with great views.

Breakfast with visiting family. The Large Farmhouse breakfasts hungrily devoured by all of us were fantastic, as they always are. Excellent quality local produce cooked perfectly, and served by polite young waiting staff (I'd like to say "served with a smile" but it's difficult to see behind face coverings). We regularly have breakfasts here, they're among the best around - if not THE best! And the Bubble & Squeak is divine. This was the first place we wanted to go once lockdown eased, and the one place we ensure we bring any visitors . Cannot be faulted.

Set in a lovely location , near Thorncombe Beacon, we’ve been coming here for the last 20 years. Used to be a bastion for the legions of poor souls who used to slog it up the steep hill in search of a great cream tea. It’s seems that unlike the past when it was laid back and you turned up and grabbed a table when it came free nowadays there is a partial booking system in place. We got there nice and early to be met with a lady more concerned with reminding us that we had to vacate a table before her lunch reservations arrived - this was 3 hrs in advance of the booking. Just no need and gives the impression that customers are somewhat an imposition rather than the relaxed atmosphere of previous (numerous) visits. Shame.

I am so sorry that you found our cafe 'Less relaxed' than you remember it during your previous visits. I am not sure where you have been during the last 18 months but life around the world has changed in ways that we could not possibly have imagined. Covid cases are on the rise again and while many have had vaccinations, we are all uncertain how well they will work against the constant virus variants that raise their heads especially in tourist areas such as this completely swamped by people who may normally travel abroad and who seem to have a complete disability to be understanding, kind and polite to people working extremely hard in every work area in this region. We therefore took the decision to try and keep our customers as safe as we possibly can during continuingly anxious times - extra sanitising, safe distancing etc and most people are extremely grateful to us for maintaining our standards throughout and onward. None of us know what will happen next - indeed several of our favourite travel destinations are in lockdown with Sri Lanka losing hundreds of lives a day (not even mentioned on the news). And so we will continue to maintain stringent standards to protect the people that we serve and to indeed protect ourselves with Wendy doing an absolutely sterling job on behalf of all of us.

after walking in the rain over the cliff tops of West Dorset it was most welcoming to have decent cup of tea and big slice of Dorset Apple cake in the open air cafe to warm us up. The staff were supper friendly and helpful offering us towels to dry ourselves off... We hadn't booked so didn't have time for a meal but from what we saw the sandwiches are to die for with real bread doorsteps and huge bowls of warming soup... Next time I visit Dorset this will be on my list of MUST EAT AT Places....

What a gem Downhouse Farm cafe is, we have been coming here for over 20 years and it never disappoints. We were lucky to be squeezed in today for Lunch as we hadn’t booked ( but we weren’t aware you could). The sandwiches are served in extra thick fresh bread which make a hearty lunch. The cream tea was also home made with still warm scones. I would also like to recommend the home made apple and ginger punch, which was delicious.

we were really impressed with the way customers were being handled in these times we are in. trying so hard to keep us all safe whilst delivering lovely food to the table. a lady at the front was welcoming people, taking orders and sorting out bills with good humour. the pea and mint soup was historically delicious with lovely bread and butter, we shared this with a cheese scone, cheddar cheese and chutney. didn't have to wait long and left very satisfied thank you.

We have visited this cafe before last year after the lock down whereby the prices were reasonable. This year it was £6 for two teas and a cream tea was £7.95 for plain scones and if you wanted fruit scones it was £9.95 an extra £2 for fruit. The place also needed a spruce up. Would not recommend.

Looking at your previous comments, you are clearly very keen on incredibly cheap and cheerful 'Carveries' but although you keep trying them, you seem disappointed over and over again. I gather that you have no idea of the cost of ingredients, cream, employment etc post lockdown and I am very sorry but I cannot afford to soak up all the extra costs whilst giving away quality home cooked food. As far as the 'spruce up' that you comment on, it is the onset of autumn and we are a farm in the middle of the countryside and we do suffer from leaf fall - I am so sorry, but as 99% of our customers are extremely happy, I am not that concerned about your comment. I can only be grateful that you will be going elsewhere to complain.

We have been struggling a bit with Dorset eateries; having hit a bit a lot of poor quality so far. Having walked over to Eype to Seatown we wouldn’t really find anywhere for lunch. Despite signs saying Downhouse was only open thurs to sun I rang them and found them to be open on a Tuesday! The second challenge was finding them; there were signs from the cliff path but there were gaps in the instructions! We eventually found the lovely garden which was a great surprise. It is a lovely setting , friendly staff and loved the savoury and sweet food. A real dorset apple cake at last! It seems ro be busy so I guess its all word of mouth. Half the people seem yo have booked

We had researched cafes in the area before attending and this certainly lived up to the previous reviews! Good friendly service and quality hearty food. We ordered a sandwich for our lunch which was served on door step granary bread which was lovely! We also ordered a take away Scone to eat later on our walk as this is only a short walk from the beautiful cliff top of Thorncombe Beacon between Bridport and Charmouth. This is a really good spot to stop for lunch or a cake to fuel up on the next stage of your journey or just as a regular visit. The scones were lovely too when we ate them later on. We would definitely return when we next come back to walk along this coastline.

This is a lovely remote place I can imagine walkers stop off, like we did. Why the 2 star review? Well £6 for a small slice of carrot cake, which tasted more like a stick toffee pudding and £6.50 for a bottle of beer to me is this establishment only expecting people to visit once after they have committed to getting there. Pure extortion. We told the rest of our family staying nearby not to bother going as the prices are absolutely crazy. What a shame.

Went for Sunday breakfast with my partner and 2 daughters - this remains my favourite breakfast spot for spring and summer (it's closed during the winter, being outside in a garden). 3 large full English breakfasts and one of Nikki's delicious bubble and squeak breakfasts arrived, hot and delicious as always. There was even some toast left over to treat the dogs! As always, the breakfasts were cooked perfectly with the quality of the ingredients shining through. For a tiny cafe and a tiny kitchen, this place truly is absolutely marvelous!

Beautiful garden and seating area. So relaxing to sit there with all the wildlife the garden attracts. Food is very good, all homemade and you can taste the quality of the ingredients. Friendly staff and great location (10 min walk to the coastal path)
