Went here on Sunday with my partner for a meal. Service was bad. Was constantly forgotten about, waited 20 minutes to order sweets but ended up going up to the bar. Would have understood if it was busy but it was not. Used to be a regular customer here so was quite disappointing. Apart from the service the food was... More

Got here about 6.30pm and was told the children had to be out by 8pm. We ordered our food and were served quickly. The food was lovely, service good. Would recommend.

My first review of the Black Bull in 2013 praised its performance. The second in 2016 was less complimentary but I'm happy to advise that normal service had been restored when we decided to visit once more. The lasagne was a challenge to finish and its content and taste was excellent putting the tenth-rate Beefeater's bought-in lasagne to shame. The... More

On Saturday 1/4/17 my wife and I and our friends were enjoying our drinks listening to the Karaoke. We were standing at the bar and the ladies had put their bottle of wine (in a cooler) on the bar. At some point this bottle of wine (still 1/2 -3/4 full)was removed, now it was unlikely to be members of the... More

On holiday with my son for a getaway and decided to treat him for a wee brunch went in at 11.30 to see if they were still serving, received a prolonged stare from one of the chefs which was very off putting and intimidating, then a lady came to talk to us she was pleasant, she went into the back... As the owner of Black Bull Inn, I am very disappointed to read this review. This is NOT how we treat our customers as you will see from the many other reviews on here. Please feel free to contact me on 01506 882710 so I can discuss this matter with you personally. I can clarify for you though, that we... More

Friendly welcome. Good hospitality and lovely meal. It is clear they care about providing visitor comfort and the facilities were immaculately clean although dated and in need of refurbishment. Value for money. We will definitely visit again.

My friend's family booked the black bull for a birthday celebration. They have a big room in the back. Cheap drink but Mid Calder is not the best for parking.

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately we do not have any designated parking in the village as even the spaces to the front of the pub belong to the council and are free to use for everyone. On street parking requires early planning when coming to visit us. Glad you enjoyed your visit though and we hope to see you... More

Used to be a great place to eat. However, something has changed here. Had to send my meal back twice, poor quality steak and cold sides. Prices are ridiculous too. Pub grub shouldn't cost so much. Some of the staff were unfriendly and it appeared we were keeping them from doing something more important. Complained to the manager who was... More

We went here for the second time and we were not disappointed. A good pub used by locals, food was very good, at a price that was reasonable. Will go again.

Description
Established in the small village of Mid Calder in 1747, this pub is one of the busiest meeting places in the area. The Black Bull Inn is at the heart of the community, and enjoys a prime location, sitting snugly in the shadow of its new town neighbour, Livingston, close to nearby rail links. Though it has been under new private ownership since August 2009, the Black Bull Inn has retained some of its period features; a real coal fire crackles in the cosy lounge bar in winter, drawing visitors in from the cold. This pub has traditional values, and this is obvious as soon as you set foot inside. A welcoming atmosphere with a friendly smile awaits you at the Black Bull Inn, as well as good food and great cask-conditioned ales. Local brew Caledonian Deuchars IPA is a permanent fixture, but there are always guest beers available on tap, and the varied wine list offers great value for money. The lounge bar serves food daily from midday until 9pm, with classic pub favourites featuring on the menu alongside lighter lunch options like baguettes, sandwiches and baked potatoes. Be sure to check the specials blackboard for something a little different. There is an unmistakable buzz when you enter the Black Bull Inn; this may have something to do with the busy calendar of events, which includes domino flyers and quiz nights and zumba and salsa classes. A function room is available to hire at the rear of the pub, which is ideal for meetings or functions.
