Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband and I came to the area for a long weekend of mountain biking. Hubby being an avid rider and myself just along for the adventure…he thought that I would be happy to do 30km of trails without breakfast or snacks! Let me tell...you hanger set in and I was feeling murderous. He realised that to save the day he needs to navigate to the nearest pub which happened to be The Lion Inn in Trellech. I sat outside with the bikes while he went in for a couple of coffees. A few minutes later he emerged with a big grin saying that the owner has said we can safely keep the bikes out back and come in to warm up by the fire. We were met with such kindness and warm friendliness! We stayed for coffee, mulled wine and dinner and I made sure that our route the next day included another visit to The Lion Inn. The food was lovely, drinks were great but the wonderful welcoming attitude of the staff will keep us coming back the next time we visit the area! Thanks for being the reason that I didn’t murder my husband on the first day of our trip 😂More

I have been visiting this pub for over 40 years both as a child and a man and what never changes is the warmth that greats you as you entre the front door. I took my elderly relatives out for a late minute lunch appointment...last saturday and they were very very busy but the warmth the manager and his staff showed me was excellent with the food very much 5 star and just wanted ti say a massive thank you and will be coming up again feom down south very soon and will be booking rooms next time. We were on our way home on a Sunday afternoon and had phoned round looking for a Sunday roast. Everywhere was shut. Stopped off at the Liom just in case. Not only was food still on, they found room for us as wall-ins, were helpful...and fast. The food was delicious, with a good range of options, and daily soup and pudding specials. Lots of veg with the roast, and two veggie choices. Their new dining room is lovely - light and spacious. Would 100% recommend.More

Booked the Lion as we were staying at Foxes Reach cottage nearby and it was suggested by the owners. The pub has a brand new restaurant extension which is really smart and the food and the service were both great. Good choices for a gluten...free person too. Good selection of wines and beers . Its an old village pub with a lot of charm but the new extension has not spoiled the atmosphere- it has added to it. We will be back in the area and will return!More

I am a local, and i come here regularly, and i have not smelled anything other than great grub. This is an awesome pub and everyone you meet at it is friendly and if you visit and you don't live a million miles away you...will be back, again and again. I regularly go for weekend breaks with my better half to very expensive establishments around London and the Cotswolds and it's very rare that we find a pub that is as welcoming and enjoyable as my local, this makes me feel very lucky to live where i do. I'm yet to meet anyone actually at The Lion that is genuinely dis-satisfied with any aspect of it at all and i can guarantee that it does not at all feel like 'a chain pub' now it has a nice new extension. I will continue to come here and be delighted with the atmosphere, the food and the staff that have always served in a freindly efficient manner. The Lion has had many accolades over the years which it rightly deserves and i can't see why it won't have many more in the future. I've attached a photo of the new restaurant so you can compare it your local Harvester for yourself.More

Recently re visited this old favourite of ours from when we lived nearer to Trellech just before Covid Reading other reviews and comments about the smell of sewage this has been a problem ever since the pub had a new septic tank fitted some years...ago and we too could smell the sewage as we walked across the car park. Why after all this time the foul smell is still allowed to continue when so many customers and neighbours complain. It really does need to be sorted by the owner. On a better note, what a change this pub has had. We were ushered into the new fancy restaurant with its high ceiling and oak beams which look like a banqueting hall. Very impressive. Aside from being a bit too much like a pub chain eatery the acoustics are not good though and my friends and i had trouble hearing one another as you end up drowning in the sound of all the conversations around you and made worse by music playing through speakers. In the modern day and age, background music in pubs and restaurants is very out of date and not helped by the poor acoustics. For people with hearing disabilities i would suggest staying in the bar area as this is quieter and more like a pub although this also has music playing annoyingly The good point is the food is spot on as always and the waiting people were good too so no problems with the food and service, overall our meal was very enjoyable and the fat chips or Trellech tatties as they are known are perfectly cooked as was my trio of butchers sausages and mash. If you can, eat in the cosy pub area for a true village pub atmosphere with better sound levels. .More
