We were staying in the local area and the restaurant had been recommended by previous guests at our cottage. As we were celebrating a birthday we made a reservation for Saturday evening via the website. This was quickly confirmed by return email, but I had to follow up with a phone call to provide my credit card to confirm the booking. The restaurant is a converted mill with some retained original features. We were pleased to see they were pretty busy. After a warm greeting by our friendly host we were shown to our table on the upper balcony area. This was more intimate than the main restaurant. We were given a small appetiser of a prawn salad in a lettuce leaf while we browsed the menu. There was plenty to choose from and some very interesting flavour combinations. My wife chose scallops and I had a braised brisket to start, followed by pork belly for my wife and lamb two ways for me. There is a very good wine list, but we went with one of the three house reds, which was very reasonably priced and delicious. While we waited for our food we were treated to an Amuse Bouche of tomato soup. This had a lovely fresh tomato taste. We also had some delicious bread with oil and balsamic dip. The courses were very good. The scallops with samphire were perfectly cooked and had a wonderful flavour. The brisket was very tender and had some lovely spice to it. The mains were equally delicious. The pork belly had been cooked perfectly, with a lovely crackling to it. The meat just melted and it came with a very nice celeriac and apple gratin. The lamb was a sous vide rump and a shoulder. It came with minted gnocchi. The flavours were delicious. Unfortunately we had eaten so well for the first two courses we didn’t have room to try the desserts, but the looked lovely. We finished with coffee and truffles, and a Cointreau for my wife, which provided a small comedy moment when the barman came over to check what we had ordered as the waitress had ordered a coffee and poncho!! The staff were so friendly and hard working. The atmosphere was good and the food delicious. We had a wonderful evening and would recommend the Stonemill wholeheartedly. It’s a shame it’s so far away from Norwich, but if you are local or staying in the area you should definitely go.

We enjoyed a lovely meal at the Stonemill . It is a little more pricey than other places nearby but it is in a class apart from anywhere else we tried locally. The menu is around £35 for 2-3 courses. We in fact had around 6 courses as we were served complimentary little dishes at the start. The service is excellent and although we were upstairs we were not at all neglected and there is a lovely view across fields from the upper window. I had a beef carpaccio starter followed by stone bass then a chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream for dessert. I’ve added photos to help you decide whether you fancy it. We nearly didn’t go due to earlier reviews about the owner doing the cooking - that is clearly out of date as either the owner is a professional chef or he has recruited one.

What a joy to find such a gem in the heart of the countryside just outside Monmouth. One of the many problems with the hateful Trip Advisor is finding any where that is actually any good. Well, make no mistake, the Stonemill is not just ‘any good’ It’s really good. This is proper foodie food for people that understand food. Beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. The most amazing Halibut we’ve ever eaten, venison that literally melted in the mouth preceded by a little pork belly starter with sugar glazed carrots that was sublime. Add in a little amuse bouche and an aperitif and the £27 per head is a bargain. And that’s not taking into account the charming staff who were super helpful, professional and attentive without ever being intrusive. A fantastic find and we’re definitely coming back - next time with our (very foodie) kids. Like I said. Win win win.

We went here on a Wednesday night, which happened to be steak night (other options are available). Nice warm welcome, lovely interior good atmosphere and in beautiful countryside. The food was very nice, with some really nice additions with a lovely amuse bouche and a welcome whitebait with tartar sauce. The bread board was very nice and quite different from similar things we have had elsewhere. I loved my steak, fab chips and really nice tomatoes. I didn't have room for dessert but they looked lovely. Being really picky service was very slightly slower than we would have liked but really friendly and knowledgeable about the food choices and options. I felt very safe (covid) here and was really really impressed with the cleanliness. As a bit of a stand out the bits and pieces in the ladies toilet incase of bad hair, bad nail varnish, period issues was absolutely fantastic and I wish more establishments would do the same. Well worth the drive for us and we will definitely go back.

Beautiful setting for a special meal. However, the steak and vegetable side were heavily salted to the point of being inedible. Another steak was offered by the chef, however we were no longer hungry. No reference was made to our complaint upon paying the bill or any offer given of a reduction in the bill. Will not be returning to this restaurant.

beautiful restaurant and excellent service. Produce was high quality and well cooked but seriously lacking in seasoning which meant it was good but not great. Also, while realise it us only a sample menu online the price should be reflective. we arrived to find set menu price £5 per person more expensive. a big deal for a family.

We’ve been trying to book this redtaurant for couple of weeks - but it’s always “fully booked” on a Weekend, so we’ve tried our luck on a Wednesday night. We must’ve been very lucky as even a Wednesday might, by the time it came to the booking day, was full. After leaving the place We’ve understood why is always busy as, previous reviews, everything is at a very high quality from service to atmosphere and food. Very nice touches with free canapes, amuse-bouche, and bread. The menu is very well balanced, difficult to pick as everything sounds amazing but with perfect cured beef, lamb and fondant - our choices. 100% will return and recommend it. Thank you Stonemill Team for a enjoyable evening out.

The Stone mill is set in the most beautiful countryside near monmouth. We had been recommend the place by friends. The restaurant is lovely and very tastefully decorated. The main front man was lovely, warm and friendly didn't get his name? Welsh chap! We waited not too long for our food which was very tasty my only negative is only one choice for vegetarians and the roast was just the veg, roast potatoes with no gravy? Gutted but the tortellini was nice that my daughter had which we shared with my roast. Deserts were heavenly! I would definitely return if more vegetarian options were available.

We have been going here for a few years and it has always been consistently excellent until now. Firstly, they didn’t have the wine we wanted chilled. Both starters and mains were all mediocre, which was surprising and very disappointing, it seemed like it might be a new chef. We asked the young manager if it was a new chef and he explained the original chef had left and the owner was standing in. I explained we were disappointed and that the quality had fallen and was not worthy of the high prices. We were just told ‘thank you for the feedback, I will pass it on’. What was most annoying was they had actually increased their prices since we visited last year. I can understand a very slight price increase for covid measures but increasing an already pricey menu without having their Michelin quality chef is inappropriate and completely unacceptable.

We had a large family celebration and were therefore asked to pre-order. Despite this, one starter was missing so one of the party had to wait. There was 20 of us, so it is easy to miss off a dish. The starters were all delicious. The mains were a little slow at coming out which meant the food was not hot by the time we could eat. All the food was tasty but one duck was mostly gristle and some of the steaks were a little tough. The duck was a ‘one off’ as the others were good. I mentioned it, and showed the gristly remains to the staff - but they didn’t seem to care. Whilst it wasn’t horrendous and the young waiting staff were lovely, I felt a little underwhelmed. Including a tip, the bill was just short of £1000 and yet the experience didn’t really match the cost. The older members of the party had to leave their jackets on as the room was a little chilly. We won’t be rushing back.

Whilst staying in a cottage at Steppes Farm we booked Sunday lunch. All the staff were friendly, helpful & attentive. Best Sunday lunch in years! The Welsh beef, great assortment of vegetables & Yorkshire pudding were amazing. The deserts were so tasty too. Definitely recommend the chocolate fondant.

Very poor service, arrived at 1900 hrs and had to ask for our order at 2000 hrs, this meant the table who arrived after us had chosen all the king scallops so none left for us. I needed a steak knife to cut my duck and the steaks although tasty were small, double cooked chips undercooked. Ordered a coffee at 2200 hrs and arrived at 2230 hrs, the staff were stood chatting in the bar area. Very inept service, will not be returning.

We had booked a table well in advance of our holiday. Out of curiosity we decided to scout the venue the evening before our booking and despite being closed a lovely lady engaged us with a pleasant and welcoming grace. We left feeling excited about the meal to follow. On the evening of 12/08/2021 we arrived and were greeted warmly by staff and shown to our table. The ambience was amazing yet the setting peaceful, almost tranquil. The attentive staff soon had drinks sorted and service had begun. We, being a party of 5 adults and 2 infants, mused the menu. All looked as if it had been written with only the reader in mind, so we elected to blanket the menu choices. Complimentary dishes, the starters, main meals and sweets left nothing to desire, each dish, well constructed, perfectly executed technical elements and taste that was like being kissed by an angel. If Michelin stars were bestowed for solely the menu, food, flavours and personal touch of the service, we couldn’t think of a more deserving restaurant/ chef. But alas it is not so, and a real festival to the pallet remains a hidden gem in a glorious setting, enjoyed and appreciated by only those that know. We will be back, without doubt, as it is now a bucket list subject to cover the menu. Thank you to each and everyone for a true fine dining experience.

Very annoyed. I have been to this restaurant twice and could not say bad word about it, I would even recommend it to others. We went to book a table for my boyfriends 26th birthday meal and they wanted to hold a deposit for the table, which was fine. They asked for his card details over the phone which isn’t very normal thing to do, my boyfriend asked if there was way to do it over email as he wasn’t comfortable giving out his card details over the phone and they said that they could, so we been waiting for the email to come through for about a week, we had no email. We then get left a very abrupt and rude voicemail from them saying if we don’t pay the deposit today, we will loose our table. So my boyfriend called them up to explain we haven’t been sent the email to pay the deposit. The manager who spoke to my boyfriend, spoke to him like he was stupid saying they would of never agreed on taking deposits over email, as I was with my boyfriend at the time they did. Instead of owning up and apologise for the situation which you expect in customer service, he was very rude. Would not recommend anymore just because lack of customer service skills.

I booked four of us in for a birthday meal and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. All the meals were well prepared and delicious. The wine list was extensive and well researched. The staff were very friendly and accommodating throughout our stay in this small but very comfy restaurant. I would definitely eat here again and fully recommend it if you require a treat and something different.
