What a fantastic place. Very old and in keeping with how a pub should be, quirky and full of personality this place is fabulous. Ales were good and food looked traditional, never sampled so cannot comment on quality. I loved the atmosphere and people were friendly, well worth a visit.

We needed a venue where we could order an early Christmas dinner for a special family get-together. The reviews on this site filled me with confidence, so I contacted Colin to see if it was possible. Nothing was too much trouble. Thank-you, Colin and staff. You made us feel very welcome, with a roaring fire to greet us on such... More

We had dinner last night at the Black Lion. We had done a 7 mile walk from Borth to Aberystwyth along the Wales Coast Path in the day time so we were quite hungry. We were not disappointed. My husband had the slow cooked belly pork which was melt-in-the-mouth, and I had lamb shank, which was delicious. The vegetables were... More

The Black Lion has a really good reputation in the local area. Generally you need to book as it is a small place and popular. Standard menu plus specials available on all three courses the night we went. Staff friendly and happy to tweak menu with sauces/veg etc.

I never moan about food, ever! But this place is beyond anything. I took my family here whilst passing on a day out and it was revolting. There was a long wait which I was fine about but when our meals finally come they were Burnt to a crisp. When I told The waiter she was so rude said well... More

Hello Rachel, I think you may have confused with another establishment, there is at least one more Black lion in the area and several more'Lions' also. The incident you talk about doesn't quite add up. Being a hands on owner I'm responsible for the food quality, preparation & presentation and certainly wouldn't let burnt offerings leave the kitchen. We also... More

We have eaten here on several occasions and we are never disappointed. The food is excellent, over the years we have tried most things on the menu and specials board. We have also recommended it to others who have been just as satisfied. They only open in the evening though. Staff are very friendly and helpful. It wasn't our first... More

Old world charm oozes from this place. We did not have a reservation but were warmly welcomed. Food fine and large portions but the dishes we had were not really 'cooking' - seafood platter nice but freezer to fryer. I had the steak which was very good - chips (again frozen) and salad - had peppercorn sauce which was ok... More

Passing through Machynlleth on a wet Saturday evening and found The Black Lion on Tripadvisor. Thought we'd give it a chance, called booked a table and headed down. Glad we booked, it was really busy. Arriving with 2 hungry 11yr olds we were impressed with the childrens menu, and vegetarian specials for myself. Very friendly and busy staff, gave very... More
