About
The Blue Anchor Inn was one of the first pubs in South Wales to produce quality bar meals back in the 1980's. Since then we have gone from strength to strength, winning awards including the South Wales Food Pub of the year for four years,2013, 2011, 2008 and 2006. We are Egon Ronay recommended and are included in the Michelin Eating out in Pubs guide since 2007(the only South Wales entry in the guide), as well as the AA Pub Guide 2013, where we appear as Pick of the Pubs for the Vale of Glamorgan. As well as food who could forget real ales! we have always been a forerunner in the promotion of real ale in South Wales. We were the first winner of the CAMRA pub of the year award back in 1983 and

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is always a fantastic place to take people who have never been here before, you can hear the clang of jaws hitting the floor when they step into this utterly remarkable old building. The traditional ales are always spectacular, and there is a good...choice. The food is always decent and sensibly enough priced. The family who have operated this pub for generations always strive to make their guests visit a special one. One minor gripe on my most recent visit, the mussels weren't properly prepared and were very gritty. My decision to dine here was informed by the posted food hygiene rating of 4/5 (Good).More

A decent real pub. No music, no TV, no gaming nor pool tables. Excellent ales really good food. Love the stone walls and thatched roof. Full of character.

This is a beautiful historic building full of charm. However my scampi and chips was the worst I have ever eaten. Undercooked chips and cheap scampi. The peas were great! My husband had the steak pie which he really enjoyed. The waitress asked if the...meals were okay and we replied truthfully but she didnt seem bothered. I would definitely not return but having read other reviews I think maybe this was just an off day!More

We had such a great experience at the Blue Anchor Inn. We stopped off here while on a coastal drive over this past Easter. We walked in just in time for Sunday roast time and we were very happy we did! The staff were very...lovely and kind. It was super cozy and it feels like you are transported back in time. Multiple times while I was there I kept imagining what it would've been like to be having a drink by the fire 600 years ago! The food was very good! I enjoyed the turkey roast immensely! Only negative I was that they gave the two of us just a few too many potatoes and I felt so badly that we couldn't take them with us. I highly recommend a stop here if you are nearby.More

Beautiful pub ! The interior was gorgeous, so many cosy nooks and fireplaces , 3 of us ate from the “ light bite” menu, it was so filling , and very tasty and well presented, my son chose a main meal which was just as...tasty. The service was fast and the ladies who brought us the food were so lovely and friendly. My son’s new favourite place to eat now.More

I went here for a reunion with friends I hadn't seen in 30 years. It is a gorgeous old pub with all the character and charm one would expect. The drinks and food were outstanding. I'd gathered by how busy it was, that this is...a local's favorite for Sunday lunch but I'd love to come back for a couple of pints in the evening as well.More

Such a beautiful country pub! Very cosy and cute inside! We visited the pub with family to celebrate my partner’s nans birthday and we were all extremely happy with our food choices! Everything appeared home cooked… I had the beef stroganoff which was delicious 👌🏻...We will definitely be returning! 😊More

Visited this amazing pub with my wife during a long weekend break whilst visiting South Wales for the first time. Having originally driven past The Blue Anchor on our way to Barry, it didn’t look particularly inviting. However, on our return leg, it looked a...bit more promising, so we decided to take a gamble and I’m so glad we did! All the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was delicious, and complimented by a superb range of real ales! We are both looking forward to another visit in the not too distant future!More

9 members of our group, the Gluttony Gang, indulged in the £29 Xmas Lunch menu on Monday 4th. Was it good? ____ No! ____ it was VERY GOOD, and this group of boorish pensioners were very satisfied and well-accepted.

Booked a table upstairs in the restaurant for the Christmas lunch time menu. The restaurant is welcoming with an open log fire and Christmas decorations. The staff were helpful and the food all 3 courses were very tasty with a great selection of drinks available....We have visited the Blue Anchor before and will continue to do so Very enjoyable but hope to see a few more logs on the fire the next time we visit.More

We have dined here many times over the years and never been treated so badly as we were last night. We had booked over 2 weeks before and duly arrived on time only to be told we couldn’t eat in the restaurant ! We asked...to speak with the manager who was arrogant and without any thought that the customer may be right ! He said that upon booking we should have specified whether we wanted to eat in the restaurant or bar, for god sake, we booked dinner on a Saturday night and have never been asked such a question before. It was obvious we had been ‘bumped’ out of the restaurant due to larger parties being accommodated. As we had booked a taxi for later that night, we had no choice other than to be be shown to the empty bar area downstairs which resembled a morgue. We were the only four diners in an area that probably had at least 40 dining cover spaces. The manager kept insisting that we should have specified when booking that we wanted to eat in the restaurant, however, there is nothing on their booking system to inform any customer of this so how would we have known, especially as we have never been asked such a question when booking many times before. As for the food, very average to say the least and they even managed to get a simple sweet order wrong twice ! The manager - Mr Coleman - needs to change his attitude to customers and was aggressive in his explanation as to how we should have gone about making a booking ! What a pity that our night was ruined by such poor management skills in such an attractive venue. Personally you couldn’t pay me to ever frequent the place again !More

Love this place, we walk over with our dog every Saturday unless we have other commitments, sometimes even on a Sunday. Love the banter we get!! Often come for dinner on Saturdays with our friends who live in Aberthaw, just a shame the lunch menu...downstairs is exactly the same as the evening menu upstairs with no specials and not enough choice of chicken as my friend doesn’t eat red meat or fish! Fish and chips is lush followed by Thai green curry. Would and often do recommend to anyone.More
