My husband and I have eaten at Shebeen a number of times in the past; it was my mother-in-law's favorite restaurant and we have always enjoyed our meals there. She is no longer with us, but we decided to raise a glass to her at Shebeen's over dinner. Our salads were excellent; everything else was not. The bobotie was quite... More

Hi Beverly, thank you for bringing this incident to our attention. While we are glad to hear that you enjoyed your salads, we are deeply saddened to hear about the rest of your frustrating experience, and there is no excuse for the type of service you received. We aim to provide top-notch customer service to each of our guests, and... More

Enjoyed our food- fish and chips and Durban spiced chicken. Delicious! We cleaned our plates. But, service was a bit slow. Could have been kitchen but even when we paid, it took longer than needed. Nonetheless we enjoyed the meal and I'd still recommend. Only other complaint, no Savanna Dry- a South Africa staple!

Hi Virginia, while we're happy to hear that you enjoyed the food, (we agree that the fish and chips and Durban spiced chicken are great options!), we're sorry that the service was a bit slow. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We hope you'll come back soon so we can have another chance to impress... More

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! It's my go-to brunch spot -- try the Hogwaller or Shrimp & Grits with a raspberry mimosa or a made-to-order Bloody Mary -- and my favorite dinner spot as well! I could eat the Ginger Salmon with pub veggies and mealie pap, Peri Peri Chicken and Durban Chicken on repeat for the rest of... More

Hi Anna, we’re so happy to hear that we're your go-to-spot! We agree the Hogwaller and Shrimp & Grits are both great options for brunch. We’ll be sure to pass the kind words along to Tim and Simone and we look forward to seeing you back again soon! Best, Walter, Owner More

Came for brunch during a visit to Charlottesville. I ordered the corned beef hash and my boyfriend ordered the French toast. We were both very unimpressed. My food was also very bland. Don't recommend it.

I'm truly disappointed to hear our flavors left you feeling underwhelmed. We usually receive rave reviews, so I can't help but wonder if you and your boyfriend caught us on an off day. In any case, I'm confident we can do better, so whether it's for brunch or a more traditional dinner, I hope you both can give us a... More

Went on a Saturday night. I and the waitress had trouble finding where the side orders were on the many page menu (which describes all the wines etc.) Calamari was quite tough and chewy. Not worth the price. Food is interesting but not very well prepared. French fries soggy. There are better places. Avoid the noisy Friday night crowd at... More

It seems that you didn't catch us at our best, and for that I truly apologize. We try to ensure that every dish that comes out of our kitchen is truly special, but it's obvious that we dropped the ball this past Saturday night. I'm 100% confident that we're capable of doing better, so if you could give us a... More

Dont miss the Green Eggs and Hammies (South African twist on eggs benedict) or the stuffed french toast. Coffee can be hit or miss, but the food never disappoints and one of the rare places that nails the consistency of poached eggs every time.

Enjoyed a fabulous dinner here. More food than I could possibly eat and everything was very excellent and very unique! First course was beer battered shrimp topped with sambal mayo, kecap manis and chives. For the main course, West African Ground Nut Stew, followed by Chocolate Samosas for dessert. Food was unique, atmosphere was inviting and waitress was attentive. Would... More

Where to begin? Our family like this restaurant, and visited regularly over the years, but tonight was a disaster. The waiter misunderstood my husband's order and wound up bringing him sides with no main course. When we asked about the missing dinner, his attitude was snippy and aggressive. Service was slow, and eye contact avoided. He never asked if everything... More

I'm certainly disappointed to hear this, Georgia, as I know that you guys have consistently enjoyed our restaurant over the years. Do you remember which day you dined with us? As you know, this type of service isn't like us at all. We're typically on top of our games when it comes to executing orders, and any misunderstanding should have... More

Looking for something different for lunch and found this restaurant using Trip Advisor. Had the seafood soup & vegetarian cakes. Both were made from scratch & full of flavor.
