About
Aroma Café & Secret Garden is a truly unique restaurant on the Costa del Sol. Firstly the restaurant is located in an old house dating to 1872 with many nooks and crannies to discover. Within its walls a whole world opens, starting with arguably Mijas´ most beautiful Andaluz Patio. Follow the Patio to its end and let a whitewashed passage guide you to our gem on the crown, the Secret Garden. Here you will find Mijas as it was a century ago, an enchanted forest of olive, orange, fig and loquat trees. Stroll to the end of this sprawling garden and you will discover an ancient ´water mine´ dating back to the Moorish times. In our garden you will enjoy Argentinean BBQ prepared right before your eyes into the early mornings on warm summer nights. Our celebrity Chef from the Canary Islands meanwhile prepares sumptuous dishes which will tempt you to come back time and again until all that is offered has been tasted! Aroma Cafe & Secret Garden offers a dining experience that leaves guests divided. While the enchanting garden setting captivates many patrons, opinions on the cuisine range from praises for the succulent steaks to disappointments with undercooked and bland dishes. The service also receives mixed reviews, with some guests encountering professionalism and others facing neglect. As for value, it's a toss-up between being commended for reasonable prices and critiqued for food and service inconsistencies.

We luckily stumbled across this gem while wandering through Mijas Pueblo, and were really glad we decided to eat here. The garden is stunning and stays a nice temperature due to all the trees and plants- a perfect escape from the blazing afternoon heat. Initially we were only going to have a drink and a light starter, but after looking at the mouth watering menu we decided to go all out with starters and mains, and make a proper meal of it. So glad we did! All our dishes were delicious and the service was very friendly and quick. This was easily the best meal we had out during our stay in Spain, and I can't wait to go back and try more things on the menu! It is slightly pricier than some of the other restaurants, but you can't compare the quality of the food here to your average restaurant around the area. It was clearly prepared by chefs who know what they are doing, and for a proper meal out I always like to spend a little more if it means getting really quality food. Literally everything we ordered was fingerlicking good! Being married to a chef and having worked in hospitality for years, it's not often I'm impressed enough to leave a good review, but this place definitely deserved it.

Since I have been to Mijas Pueblo everyone I meet asks me have I been to the 'Secret Garden' and If I havnt..why not?? So I went with a friend last Saturday & I wasn't disappointed. The 'Aroma Cafe' cafe entrance is a traditional Andalucian Premises with beautiful stonework and wooden features & decorations. A small walkway leads you to one of the most impressive outdoor restaurants I have ever seen. It really has yo be seen to be believed. The staff were fantastic and you can see your food being prepared on the outdoor grills and Ovens. The owner Thomas could not have more welcoming, and he recommended some things we should do in Mijas during our stay. Highly recommended, will be back again soon.

Found this last year where we just had a drink, returned this year whilst attending the Blues Festival.( which was brilliant) Met owner Tom who was very pleasant and friendly, he was playing music to a budding (very) young musician-trying to educate him... We dined here, my wife ate Pork and I had Steak, and a couple of nice glasses of wine, we were served by Giovanni, who was very polite and attentive, a fantastic meal cooked on the barbecue, by great chefs, very friendly, nothing was too much bother for them, all very friendly, the secret garden is lovely we would recommend a visit, we will certainly be returning, well done everyone.

Visited today with friends for lunch - the service was practically non-existent despite being virtually empty. The food was very basic and to be quite honest I was quite ill on returning home. Although this restaurant has a beautiful location I would not recommend it because of the very poor service and questionable food. There are many other very good restaurants in the pueblo and I would definitely try them rather than eat here.

Tonight 40 of us went to Aroma, Secret Garden in Mijas. Every single person on every table of our group complained and I feel really terrible. 100% dis satisfaction, that is truly serious. I was only trying to give my friends a good time and also support restaurants who needed our trade. I had been up to arrange it 3 times and not accepted even a drink. I just wanted to be useful. The salad was dreadful, no imagination, a pile of rough lettuce,no welcome, no sign of any oil or vinegar or pepper and salt, cold croquettes, poor service, impossible to get our extra glass of wine which was promised. Adolfo to my mind is unsuitable as a manager and was stressed up and accusing, the owner a Canadian was pleasant but the whole thing was very poorly organised. The tables that arrived at 6 were ignored for one hour. I arrived just before 7 and was treated to a barrage of abuse from the manager Adolfo because i questioned why he had not attended to the three tables already there. I had informed him that people would be arriving at staggered times and he had said No problem. I had put this in writing and printed out that the last arrivals would be my family at 7.30 but everyone would be there before 7.30 which was the case. H assured me that was fine. He then decided at 7 o'clock to put all the croquettes and inedible salad on every table irrespective of many people not having arrived. He told me they have plenty of customers and did not need us. At no point did I ask for a cheap meal. I asked for quality and value for money, both sadly lacking. At no point did I ask for any concession for myself, not even a cup of coffee when I went to see him. I sent several emails to confirm the details,etc.. The main course of pork was according to the recipients not good and looked very unappetising with a congealed brown sauce on. I can loosely compare it with a lump of something coated with brown blancmange. The trout was satisfactory. The meal was presented badly with only sliced white wet potatoes and no vegetable at all though I had been assured there would be vegetables, not even a slice of lemon with the fish and no garnish. Vegetables would not have been important if the salad had been good. The sweets were bits and pieces of too sweet cakes, a miss match, untidily presented. We could not eat the salad or the sweet. My family went straight outside and bought ice creams. The service and attitude was bad. The manager was rude to several of my group, I had hoped not to put this review on this site but due to pressure from members of my group I have done so. It is all very upsetting, but in fact some of my party enjoyed meeting their friends and we all liked the garden but the meal and service was totally unsatisfactory. I have since heard from several friends that they have also had very bad meals in this place and I blame myself being local for not checking it out beforehand and not even reading a review on this site.

A pleasant location up a Mijas side street with a pretty garden at the back with olive and orange trees. And that’s where the good bit ended. The head waiter was horrible to the staff to such a degree they seemed visibly scared of him and it created a dreadful atmosphere. I had their signature salad, the lettuce was limp and drowned in balsamic vinegar. My wife had a prawn salad some of which were cremated and there were hardly any. Her lettuce was also pretty grim with just mayo dumped on top. When I complained to the head waiter he just got aggressive and we left never to return

We went into the secret garden restaurant last night, we waited 15 minutes for a drink and everytime we wanted another it was a wait. the fod was tasty and the fish was excellent but the service was appalling, manager was rude when questioned about the service, staff didnt have a clue and even when they wrote orders down they still got them wrong. Shame good food rubbish service. In the toilets there was no hand gel and no towels or hand dryer.

We visited here this evening on a recommendation so had not viewed the reviews beforehand. The setting is pretty and unexpected for Mijas, the restaurant at the front looks empty but all are out the back in the secret garden. As you walk through the indoor restaurant it is tired and appears grubby….. however you quickly forget this as you enter the garden. The service was ok, not good but nothing particularly to give it a bad review….. just average. Staff were pleasant enough. Food took quite a long time to arrive and it was pretty quiet so wouldn’t want to visit at the height of the season. I had the chicken skewer priced at €16 and it was 4 inch squares of chicken and some bits of pepper with a side of veg. Tasted great but overpriced for the amount of food. Thankfully I wasn’t overly hungry. My husband ordered a medium to well done tenderloin steak at €26….. with a baked potato and peppercorn sauce. It was medium at best (more on the medium rare side) and was very disappointing for the price. The baked potato was hard and dry and the steak was fatty in places. We asked for the bill and eventually got fed up if waiting and walked up to pay. Overall a pretty poor experience which we won’t be repeating. Save your money and go elsewhere.

The food and service were excellent. The staff is so friendly and helpfull, begining with Gisela who greeted us and gave us her suggestions. Even the head chef came down to offer advice and suggestions. We were in the mood for beef steaks and they have FABULOUS meat from Argentina and from Spain. The beef is cokked over wood fire-pit. Absolutely exquisite dinner. Lunch is on the huge and beautiful garden terrace in the back that you cannot see from the street. Dinner is inside in a quaint Spanish style decor. At our last of four visits, the chef José suggested we have the Argentinian cut beef. Truly perfect. Will never forget such a meal. International staff was all so friendly and helpfull. Our barman told us he was born in Cuba and his assistant in Colombia! We suggest you follow their advice as to what dish you should order, we were not disappointed in four dinners, quite to the contrary, we can't wait to go back when the lockdown is over and we can all travel safely. We were there in the low season, February 2020, pre lockdown. Dinner for two, with wine, was about 65$ US. Very reasonable for the quality received.

I wrote a review about this restaurant back in 2015 expressing my concern about attention to detail and how poor it was in getting orders wrong, well guess what here we are 5 years on and its still shocking. We recently visited this restaurant on two occasions on a week stay in Mijas and on both occasions they tried to give my wife food which contained eggs which she is allergic too. On both occasions it was explained in Spanish that she had an egg allergy and on both occasions they served her backed potato with mayonnaise. The only reason we went back a second time was to try and give them the benefit of the doubt that there had been a lack of communication between waitress and chef, well guess what, the same mistake was made a second time despite the waitress confirming she had told the chef of my wife's allergy. On speaking to the owner who is Dutch I believe, despite his American accent he tried to brush it off as a simple mistake saying 'I guess we just love people to try our mayonnaise' and then offering to change it. Let me just say I don't think giving people food that they cannot eat as a potential matter of life and death is a joke to be brushed over, not just on one occasion but two, his front of house manager on the evening of the 31st July was extremely rude and totally unhelpful and seemed totally ignorant of the fact that restaurants have been closed down and prosecutions have been made for such mistakes, if it had not been for my wife being totally aware of what was served due to our previous experience two days before she would have ended up in hospital or worse. For this to happen once is unfortunate but for it to happen twice in 3 days is pure negligence and dangerous to the extreme. Anyone visiting here should beware and take note if they suffer from allergic reactions to certain foods. Check and check again when your order comes to the table as the lighting is subdued and its not easy to see.

The food was fine, but we sat inside and there was a very unpleasant drain smell. The gents toilet cistern was broken and you had to put your hand inside to flush it. Our main course was cooked before we had finished our starters so it was all very rushed. I was surprised that once we had finished the mains and ordered more drinks we didn't seem to be able to get the plates removed. So took it upon myself to put the dishes on the next table, the waiter was furious and shouted if you want another table you must pay for it. I tried to point out that we were their only customers and that if they had cleared the table as asked I wouldn't have had to use my own initiative. This didn't help things as he got more and more aggressive???

I made my booking via what's app as advised on the website. I booked my table for 6.30-6.45. As we arrived we were greeted by the waiter who advised they don't open till 7pm - not a great start! After a swift drink down the road we walked back up to the restaurant where we were greeted again by the waiter who kindly took us to our table! There were 5 adults and 1 seven year old! The waiter took our order and we settled in to enjoy ourselves....starters were absolutely fine. The main course sadly didn't hit the mark, with wrong steaks and cooking preferences completely wrong! However the staff did what they could to correct the issues and we continued to enjoy ourselves. Our 7 year old took to playing with the stones and enjoyed making pictures with them and was excited to show everyone to which the owner came over to infom us he was too loud! He was enjoying his Holiday in Spain, he was most certainly not loud!!!! If the owner does not want children to enter his establishment he should advise on booking. I was totally disappointed with the food and the manager. We spent a considerable amount of money but will not be recommending this restaurant at any point in the future to our friends, families and businesses.

Dear sir/ma’am, You have made a very objective review which I appreciate so will try to respond in same way. 1. We had an emergency issue with piping and needed to fix it immediately, I am truly sorry for the inconvenience. 2. I am also truly sorry regarding the improperly steaks, there is no excuse fo this and we have spoken with our head-chef about rectifying the situation on his rest day. 3. And the point that is most hurtful to read considering I have an 11 year old son, and we have had and continue to have had thousands of families with young children come to the Secret Garden… I have to look out for EVERYONE’S dining pleasure. We have children EVERYDAY in the garden, they LOVE it. Sometimes they get excited and start running around or shouting a bit more than they realize and I have to remind them, ALWAYS in a friendly, respectful manner, that there are other guests to consider. I did this in your case, I was polite and friendly yet you took offense without even considering the people all around you. So, please do NOT ever imply that I don’t like kids, it’s a personal assumption I take very seriously. It’s easy to use Trip Advisor as a tool to attack on restaurants but it’s offensive to so on a personal level especially when we are talking about children, it’s border slandering.

We were very disappointed with our meal here this week. The tenderloin steak was ok but the entrecôte was terrible. It was undercooked on one side and burnt on the other. It was cold in the middle and chewy. The baked potatoes were luke warm (how difficult is it to serve a good baked potato)? The garden salad was nice but we had to ask for some dressing as it was bought to the table dry! To top it all we were told by the waiter that they couldn’t take card payments due to a poor wifi signal as we went to pay - so we had to go outside and find a cash machine. He was sorry he hadn’t mentioned it before we ordered …..

Over the last few years we have always made a bee line for this restaurant. Sadly, the last couple of visits have proved overpriced and poor value and quality. The drinks are expensive; 12euro for a g&t. Food that should have been delicious was poorly presented and over cooked. 4.5 euros charged for bread which was not asked for or required. service was surly with a poor understanding of the dishes ordered and , therefore delivered in bits when reminded. Overall, I felt they thought they were doing us a favour allowing us into their secret garden..

This was always one of our favourite restuarants and when we had a special family meal it was our first choice last night. What a bad decision that turned out to be. This place has certainly plummeted and is not helped by a manager with a coundn't care less attitude. My brother and I were served a mixed grill for two which was some of the worst meat (fat actually) I've seen. Actullay one of the pieces of meat had a weird taste - we left it! The waittress asked us how our food was and whenI told her it was poor she went to see the manager. He never came over and then when we asked for the bill, I went to see him saying I was unhappy, he just shrugged his shoulders and said goodbye. I gather that they have had a lot of staffing problems, but we wont be back. There are so many good restaurants in the village, this one wont be missed. Interesting that there are many bad reviews, but the staff never respond. Maybe it confirms they really dont care.
