About
It’s with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the closure of The Goat. The Goat has been sold and will become a community centre. There has been a Goat pub in Ponders End for nearly 272 years. We closed our doors for good and had a last gathering yesterday, Friday 26th April 2024. where we celebrated all the good times. We are immensely proud of our time here. We would like to say a massive thank you to all our customers, both local and from afar.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a gem of a pub with a good range of beers and lagers, all types of drinks reasonably priced and special offers on. The food is exceptionally good - real home cooked and of the highest quality and very good value. The chefs clearly know their stuff and the "specials" are innovative and satisfying. The staff are the most welcoming, always friendly and accommodating, both to "locals" and new visitors. They exercised great covid measures in the bad old days, making for a safe and comfortable environment. I would highly recommend a visit if just for a quick pint or a lovely relaxing evening with a good meal and good company.

It was the first time me and my family visited this pub, from the outside it looks small but it’s not. You wouldn’t realise we was still in this pandemic as when you walk in the atmosphere was just perfect, Football on the tv, people chatting and laughing(not too loudly) Food was delicious and the 2 men that was working I couldn’t fault them especially the guy with an accent, I didn’t get his name but was very friendly. Me and my family will definitely be back... maybe it’s our new Sunday lunch place. Thank you to the whole team that work there

The staff and management at this pub and restaurant always go above and beyond to welcome and accommodate their customers. I have been a regular here for 15 years and i have never experienced any negativity from any of the staff... the previous review from a 1 time clearly disgruntled customer should not be viewed, allowed or taken any notice of! I know many a customer who have been here regularly or once and have never heard of such awful feedback... this is my pub and it will always be a special family oriented place ... the recent refurbishment is spectacular and you do not need to know the surrounding area to feel welcomed and treated with respect.

This is a pub for the locals, the rough ones that crawl out of the woodwork in the dark of night. I went for a drink with colleagues from a local organisation. The landlady said we could order food to bring in as their kitchen is closed. When the food arrived she told us we had to eat outside as per government guidelines at a table for six. This was never explained to us in the beginning. She then went on to be hostile about the other colleagues supposedly not following rules outside that were nothing to do with our group. I happily left and ate my food elsewhere because the place is a dive and I would never eat on the roadside of Hertford Rd. Most of our colleagues were Black and the landlady clearly had a problem with that. Good luck going there if you are a darker shade of dairy milk.

It's always upsetting when a reviewer posts something like this, however it turns out that the above reviewer had problems following government guidelines ... the group she was with requested 3 tables for 18 guests, when they arrived there were 28 of them and we did our best to accommodate them. Some of the group started moving the tables around and together against guidelines so this prompted a response which some of the group were not happy with in spite of the covid guidelines of groups of six. The group she visited with have also been regulars of the Goat for years and we enjoy a good relationship with them. We don't know this reviewer as they have never visited our pub before, a pub which welcomes all... Pulling the race card never sits well with anyone, especially when we have a team which includes people of asian, black, middle eastern and south african backgrounds. Maybe this individual needs to look at themselves hard before they try to go down this road. You shouldn't throw your toys out of the pram if you don't like the rules... Rules we didn't make up but which all are required to respect...

So great to have our wonderful local fully open again! Excellent ambience, wonderful staff, keen prices and plenty of friendly faces, old and new. The roof terrace is a joy, as is the bright and airy extended downstairs bar. A big thank you to all the staff for looking after us - and especially during what has been for many a very trying time - you're doing a grand job. Cheers!

I went here on a first date. The atmosphere was great and the staff friendly. We were drinking and we were asked if we wanted to join a pub quiz. The quiz was so much fun, the guy running it very funny and really friendly! We all sat around talking afterwards. Dog friendly and good beer/drinks selection. It’s one of the last remaining pubs in the area. Please support it. It was my first time there and it would be a dying shame for community hubs like these to go!

Lovely relaxed atmosphere, friendly bar staff, well cooked food from first class chef. Affordable prices, good service, comfortable seating, good hygiene standard - what’s not to like? Recommended venue for a meal out with family or friends.

I come in here regular on my own. Have a good chat to all sorts of people from all walks of life f. No one is snooty at all, and everyone's up for the chat. Read some other reviews and these people obviously live on a pedestal and have no experience in the real world.

Staff are so ridiculously rude and unbelievable, doesn't matter how much money you spend here the staff (especially one scottish dude in particular) will talk to you like utter rubbish, he's constantly sarcastic and can't be bothered, he's upset my girlfriend and her friends countless of times with he's disgusting attitude. It's a shame really as it's a decent pub other than that, manager definitely needs to hire some better and more polite staff.

No idea how we ended up here but decided to have a meal while passing through. Nice local pub, clean and well looked after. Easy to park at the back. I had a very nice burger and chips and my partner really enjoyed the homemade steak pie. Excellent value, friendly barmaid. Hope the locals visit and enjoy

Nice and clean good pub for reasonably priced drinks 👍 and food. Bar staff polite and helpful. Outside area mainly used for smokers so beware if you fancy eating outside
