Decided to eat after reading all the great reviews about the great food and low key dining experience. Fine dining without a dress code also gets a big thumbs up from me as I typically only wear shorts in the summer. The food was excellent...More

Thank you for your review. We are so pleased to offer a quality experience in a relaxed and easy way, being located in a National Park calls for it I think. Thanks so much for dining with us!

We hadn't planned to eat here, but nothing else was open in Norris Point after a long Tablelands hike. We would have settled for pub grub, but instead found ourselves in this low key elegant setting, with a lovely view and beautifully prepared, artfully plated...More

In general, the food we had in Newfoundland wasn't over the top (which was totally fine, the nature and hospitality made up for it!). But this restaurant was very tasty. We ordered the mussels for an appetizer, and I really enjoyed the cod. My mom...More

Absolutely splendid meal at The Black Spruce. The menu featured local foods that were combined with great tastes and textures to make wonderful dishes. The mussels in curry sauce were brilliant. We also enjoyed the seafood crespelles which were absolutely delightful crèpes filled with local...More

Both salads were good, but mixed green better than Caesar. Chowder very good, very creamy but the thick vegetarian one was a star. Excellent gnocchi, lots of seafood in the crepe, cod good.

Dear atcanad, I'm sorry to have been rude and personal in my review. I should have written more carefully. Here's what led to my post: Your restaurant is at a harbor, but you had only one fish dish on the menu and you were out of it. The description of your pork dish included the producer, indicating it was a heritage breed, raised for its juiciness and succulence. Our waiter told us customers found it dry, which is tough to do with heritage pork and the first time a server has ever told me a dish was bad. The amuse bouche - salmonish cream cheese on puff pasty - was obviously prepared well in advance since the pastry was soggy and stuck to the plate. The chowder did not even have a whiff of seafood flavor. The steak was overcooked, vegetables overdone and the bread pudding it was served on was a soggy lump. The gnocchi were tough enough to have come from a plastic freezer bag, its saucy was acrid and the salad of local greens seems to have been thrown on the plate and topped with what must have been bottled French dressing. These are not matters of taste, but problems with preparation, care with ingredients and thoughtfulness. That's why I said the kitchen needed more knowledge and care about food.
