A delightful tavern with staff in period clothing and in character. The food and drink was excellent. Our server was delightful and we were serenaded by guitar and then visited with him. Great food, good friends, and a enjoyable immersion in colonial experience.

I visited in April 2017 with a group of people. All 14 of us enjoyed the selections we chose. No one left disappointed, no one left hungry either! I will definitely return to this place!

Good food, good service. We were visiting CW for 3 days and were happy to have the fortune to get into Chowings for lunch one day. Great atmosphere and good lunch date with variety and nice cold beers!

We had a very late lunch here during our visit to Williamsburg. In spite of how empty the streets were, Chowning's was busy. We opted to share a table with others in order to get seated earlier. As a result we got in quickly and...More

Chowning's Tavern is quite different from the other historic area taverns in that it serves the same menu for lunch and dinner and has less expensive choices. It is very casual, more like a pub, and has bowls of peanuts in the shell on the...More

One thing I have to say is it was difficult for me to choice anything I could eat. I ended up with a salad with ham/chicken which was good. My husband has welsh rabbit. Service was great. I just wasn't a fan of the food

Went to Chownings for beer. I have used this place as a "watering hole" for 36 years. They serve your adult beverage in a pint mug. The establishment has determined that the mugs are really 18 oz. instead of 16 oz. so now they only...More

Visiting Colonial Williamsburg we were staying late for the "Cry Witch" witchtrial so decided to stick around the place for dinner and stopped here at Josiah Chowning's Tavern. The old tavern house is simple yet charming looking and exudes a happy energy. The costumed staff...More

Upon entering for lunch, they asked us if we would sit at a table with others or if we wanted to wait for a private table. We opted to sit with others, and glad we did, as meeting a young couple who were down from...More

Had lunch here while touring Williamsburg. Be warned it is really the only sit down restaurant open at lunch and the wait can approach two hours. We shared a table with a nice couple and had some great beef sandwiches. The prices are a bit...More

We are coming Nov. 26, 2016 for the SP Event Dinner at 1:15pm. I'm wondering what the meal will entail? We have a 6 person party attending and already pre paid for the meal. Has gratuity already been included in that price we paid?

I suggest you direct your question to the venue where you purchased your special event ticket. I only dine at Chownings at regular dining, not special events. No idea what the menu will be.
