Albona is in the North Beach area and my brother and his wife and I ate there last night. We had wonderful appetizers on the house.Joe had spaghetti with meat balls, Fran had their strudel con pasta fatta in casa and I had the veal shank. The young owner and chef,Sam ,served our meal for us. He was efficient and... More

Some of the most spectacular food we've eaten in a long time! Each dish with a twist, we've tried 2 appetizers and 3 entrees: arugula salad and gnocchi for appetizers and braised chicken in branded marasca cherry sauce and strudel con pasta fatta in casa. One was better than the other! Chef and owner, Sam Hernandez was also our server... More

This was quite an interesting find near Fisherman's ward. Not a tourist trap, this is a very authentic Istrian restaurant on a quiet street in a somewhat residential area only 1-2 blocks off the main drag. Basically Italian with a Balkan twist, Istria is an area on the coast of Croatia which used to be owned by Venice. I had... More

We booked into this restaurant on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews and we were definitely not disappointed! It is an unassuming little place - we almost walked past it - but we really enjoyed our dinner there. We had mussels and pear with gorgonzola as appetisers, and veal shank and spaghetti with meatballs as entree. It was all delicious and... More

Food here is excellent. Read the history of the place to understand where your food is based. We had a couple on next table to us and conversed with them about wine, they having come to town from Napa and brought own wine, and the food we were served. We all had different courses which were mostly excellent. Soup was... More

We were four friends who visited Albona on a not so busy Thursday in October. Actually, a taxi driver in San Francisco recommended it to us - and thank you, taxi driver, whoever you are - you were playing Miles Davies on your stereo and told us that you make wine at home on a hobby basis together with your... If you want to eat delicious Italian food, it's the right place. A small restaurant serves great Italian food, better than in many restaurants in Italy. Great wines, friendly service.

We went there for business dinner. We ordered calamari, mussels, seafood pasta and soup. Soup was not very good but the rest was perfect. Waiter recommended a red wine for us. This wine was not the most expensive one. The price of the wine was average amongst the menu or below. But it tasted just great. He could have recommended... More

Had a wonderful delicate meal here, thoroughly enjoyed by us. If you want to be in a more neighborhood restaurant this is a place to go. The food was a pleasant fusion of Austro-Hungarian, Italian and Dalmatian. Interesting and so tasty. The Babich wine was great. You need to book in advance for a Friday or Saturday night. Enjoy!!

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
