I bought a Groupon coupon and tried calling this restaurant, but the phone number didn't work. Thus, I couldn't make the reservation that the fine print required. I visited the restaurant's website and confirmed that Groupon had the right phone number for the restaurant, and I also confirmed that I dialed the number correctly. Thinking the restaurant might be closed,... More

Very good dinner. We had house green salads, calamari appetizer and cioppino and all were excellent. They even served their draft Peroni beer in nice chilled glasses. The only improvement I would recommend would be to serve a crusty Italian bread instead of focaccia as it does not lend itself to mopping up the great cioppino broth. We actually had... More

We are here on a Saturday evening with young kids. Got right in without a reservation. Italian drama was showing on one wall. Server was friendly and engaging until we didn't order wine. Lasagna was great! Cioppino was the best- not just seafood in tomato soup, but deliciously prepared. Kids pizza was very acidic. Took 20 minutes to get our... More

We were searching for a restaurant for dinner. A server led us in with some bruschetta samples, often a sign of a commercial restaurant. However the bruschetta was delicious, the servers were from Italy and the food and atmosphere was good. We were happy with our meal. Contrary to other reviews, the service was good, very similar to the service... More

Used a Groupon and showed up early on a Tuesday late afternoon. They could not have been nicer or more accommodating. Upgrade our glasses of wine, served good Cioppino & a very fresh salad. Seated us at a window table. Good old-line North Beach Restaurant.

We enjoyed superb and prompt service by friendly staff at our windowside seat in Little Italy. I had the salmon in pink sauce over homemade fettuccine, which was delicious. My wife liked her shrimp and scallops on pasta. Nice atmosphere. Can't go wrong here.

Stumbled onto this place cuz we were hungry and Tony's Pizza was packed. Our server was very short and not friendly. I asked if they serve garlic bread, he said no and walked away. Would've liked it if he said they just had bread. But even then, bread wasn't brought out till halfway thru the dinner. We ordered calamari appetizers,... More

We went to this place after finding a groupon. We walked from the Marriott Marquis. It was an extended walk. I have to admit that we did not expect much initially. We expected even less when we actually saw the storefront. We received a lot more than we expected. We had appetizers which were excellent! I actually tried an entrée... More

The fettuccini bolognaise was homemade and very good. The other pastas ordered by my friends were not part of the homemade pasta menu and were not as good. The waiter was unfriendly, never brought one of the appetizers ordered, a large glass of water requested, the extra bread someone asked for nor the t-shirt my friend asked to buy. He... More

We went there for pizzas. We waited quite a while before getting them and were very disappointed : the crust was overcooked on the edge but undercooked in the middle, and the toppings were not very tasty. But the worst was the service. At some point the waiter removed bread, oil and spicy sauce from our table just to give... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
