The service was great and the decor was really nice/trendy. It felt comfortable inside the restaurant. We were disappointed with the food. Appetizers and garlic bread were a good start but the mains fell short on flavor. We had a pasta and a fish dish. The "yum" or "wow" factor just wasn't there that we were hoping for by going... We got to Cucina Urbana at 6:45 on a Thursday, 45 minutes early but they were able to seat us. You definitely need a reservation. I wasn't feeling well, so I only had one slice of the mushroom pizza. It was good but not amazing. I wouldn't go back for their pizza. I had read Yelp reviews a few days... More

Fabulous room, delicious food, excellent service! The restaurant was recommended to me. I live in NY and couldn't just pop in with questions. I had the pleasure of working with Tiffany. She took care of every detail and went above and beyond with ideas and suggestions. A wonderful time was had by all!

At the restaurant now. Service is very slow. Had the Cucina Cab Sauv ... OK glass of wine with a $1 going to charity (nice idea). Ordered the spaghettini - shrimp w/ a spicy tomato caper olive sauce. Pasta was al dente on steroids ... almost crunchy. Disappointed the capers and olives were lost in the sauce.... basket of bread... More

This excellent Italian restaurant is in the space formerly made famous by the Laurel. And it's a great neighborhood addition.

This is a favourite restaurant whenever we visit San Diego. Last night we were a table of nine. As ever the most noteworthy aspect of the evening was the quality of the service, beginning to end. Relaxed, attentive, helpful ... and a special thanks for help with suggestions as to alternatives given that the wine we had wanted was not... More

The service at this restaurant is excellent. The vibe is young (and appropriately loud). The food is a bit above average but not excellent. Portions on the appetizers were small. The emphasis is on alcoholic beverages. If you want to go, you must make a reservation!

Delicious food and atmosphere. We tasted fried squash blossoms. The pizza was devine and we were lucky enough to go on $10 Pizza night. The wait staff provided excellent service! Can't wait to go back!

On a rainy day in San Diego, we were looking for a lunch spot before flying home. Nice menu with lots of choices. We each ordered the 1/2 sandwich and soup. My sandwich was a brie and pear; my husband had the hero sandwich. Our soup was Tuscan bean. Our waiter/bartender was so attentive and knew we had a time frame... More

Description
CUCINA urbana is a California inspired Italian Kitchen and Wine Shop. Owner Tracy Borkum's flair for combining great ambience, award-winning cuisine and unparalleled service are once again starring components in this Urban Kitchen Group creation. The restaurant is being heralded as the leader in the new regime of affordable dining in San Diego and has been the subject of praise from numerous local and national publications.

The restaurant's interior evokes a modern kitchen combined with the history and comfort of an old rustic country farmhouse. A touch of home, splash of bohemia and many objects new and old attract the eye. A focus on raw, sustainable material and reclaimed local material is found throughout. Discarded fence boards recovered from San Diego county wrap columns, walls, service stations and the back bar.

Chef Joe Magnanelli's menu offers affordable selections of vasi + antipasti + boards + insalate + pizza + pasta + piatti + dolce.

His whimsical expression of Italian classics coupled with the use of the freshest local produce, and organic and sustainable products comprise a diverse menu with all items at or below $20. Whether dining traditionally or 'family style', guests have become hooked on favorites such as stuffed fried squash blossoms, ricotta gnudi, braised black cod and veal piccata.

Wines of 'The Americas,' including California, Washington, Oregon, Argentina, Chile and Italy are among the major wine-producing regions offered in CUCINA urbana's retail priced Wine Shop. Guests are invited to visit the restaurant's retail area to select a bottle for lunch or dinner (a corkage fee of $8 applies) or purchase wine to go.

Additionally, CU plays host to a monthly 'Winemakers Series,' where guests are invited to enjoy hors d'oeuvres, taste a variety of wines and mingle with a winemaker in a casual, informal setting.

- Strong commitment to seasonality + sustainability
- organic + local product used whenever possible
- wines from the Americas and Italy - sold at retail pricing
- special discounts for cases of wine to go!
- Local artisan beers + italian favorites
- housemade infused liquors + specialty cocktails
