If you are a sake lover, or perhaps just starting to learn about sake, then Sakaya is a great place to start. FYI, this is not a restaurant. It is a sake shop, and a great one! Rick and Hiroko are wonderful and always willing to help you select a bottle, or answer any questions you may have about sake.... More

Friendly little out of the way East Village shop big enough to fit 10 people inside--if they're skinny. The owners are a couple, American husband, Japanese wife who know way too much about all things sake. Only too happy to explain it all and make suggestions. Worth a visit.

Rick her and his wife Hiroko are TRUE Sake enthusiasts/experts. Go here is you have a True understanding or no understanding of Sake. They will guide you through the tradition and varieties. I now of no other establishment which has a better understanding or inventory of fine Sake's. You can purchase at the store or order on line. I recommend... More

This store was mentioned in 'Wine Enthusiast'. It is a minuscule store in the East Village-- about the size of a broom closet. There are shelves of high end sake and the owners are very knowledgeable. Unfortunately- there is no tasting- except on Saturdays. And there is no food. I wanted to go to EN Brasserie in the West Village... More

The proprietors are attentive and super knowledgeable about sake. They have tastings frequently if you get on their email list. This is the kind of place that makes NYC special.

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
