Fun setting on big patio with sand "floor" overlooking the beach/ocean, Great view, with huge umbrellas providing some shade to most tables. Food? It's ok, but most people don't come here for the food. It's the atmosphere, baby! Definitely "feels" like Hawaii, and can't think of a better place for afternoon cocktails. It's casual and fun...even if prices are a... More

The bands are great on weekends and they have an amazing view. Service is good and food is good but the atmosphere is where it is. Great place to people watch and relax.

Great spot for an evening meal with the family. We sat at a table with our toes in the sand and enjoyed the live music and hula. The kids loved the sliders while we enjoyed fresh Mahi Mahi and a Mai Tai or two. Desert disappeared as quick as a sunset. After dinner, we strolled through the shops nearby before... More

This restaurant has the best location ever! It is an outdoor restaurant with sand for a floor (for half of the restaurant)! You can enjoy your meal with an amazing view of the ocean (it is a deck of sand on the oceanfront)! The food was delicious, with lots of great looking menu options (with the best pink lemonade ever)!... More

Wait for a table against the beach. Great view of the Kona cove. Tiki torches add to the ambiance. Classic tropical drinks. Lots of fresh fish prepared in all kinds of exotic ways. Decent wine and beer selection. Over the top deserts. Romance.

Our bartender, Jake, was very friendly and outgoing! Of course, the view "on the rocks" right over the water was lovely too! We tried the pupu platter and all of the food on it was delicious! Of course, for all of this awesomeness, you pay a price. As a couple, with a few drinks and a split appetizer, we walked... More

The food was OK, the drinks were pretty good! The view is awesome! We came back a 2nd time during our week long visit to the island. Great spot to hang out and watch the waves crash. We caught live music the first time which was fun!

Huggos is a nice environment but I gotta say the service sucks. I order a drink and every time I go I'm charged a different price. Double plus what I get charged across the street at Bongo Bens. Their pupus on the happy hour menu are a joke. Trust me, you'll laugh when you get it. They do have great... More

Fun having a drink and or a meal on the beach with your table and chairs dug into the sand! Beautiful scenery, especially at sunset! Staff were all courteous and friendly. The food was average-fish was great but the Oneo salad could have more...just boring lettuce with a few veg thrown in. Fish tacos a very good.

Description
Opened in 1998 in the waterfront location adjacent to Huggo's fine dining restaurant, On the Rocks is a come as you are, kau kau (eat) great food with sand between your toes, kick back and enjoy great island entertainment center of fun on Hawaii Island. "After operating Huggo's restaurant for 18 years, we had the opportunity to purchase the vacant lot right next door and we jumped at it," Eric says. "The concept is what you see today - a casual bar and restaurant set literally on the rocks and sand of Kailua-Bay. Like many locals, we were tired of driving 20 miles or more up the coast to enjoy this sort of relaxed resort ambiance and decided to create just that right here in town."
