Really enjoyed our visit to The Walnut Tree. Food was a big highlight and service very efficient. Menu had good choices and table spacing good.

We had a very enjoyable stay at this lovely inn. The main attraction was the quality of the service. Every single member of staff could not have been nicer. And we probably tried their patience by locking ourselves out of our room! One sign of...how much they cared was us overhearing the chef asking the waitress if we had given her any feedback on the breakfast! The breakfast was superb - great locally produced sausages and bacon. The evening meal on the previous night had been very good too. I recommend the calamari, soft and delicious. The local beer was excellent. The whole pub looked recently refurbished, or perhaps it was just really well looked after. The rooms were very comfortable - coffee bags rather than instant coffee was a nice detail. It was exceptionally good value. We will return, so long as we promise not to lock ourselves out of our room again.More

Extremely poor service. Arrived at 17.00 into an empty pub. Rather than being greater, we were asked immediately had we booked. Much to our amazement based on above. We were then seated at a table right by the main entrance. We then asked if we...could see the menu, as it was likely we would want a bar snack or the full evening menu. We were told this was only available to see from 17.30. We then asked if we could have an idea of what’s on the menu, maybe bread and olives, garlic bread etc etc. The lady said we would have to wait as she or her staff didn’t know as the menu changed daily. When the menu finally did arrive, it was in essence a standard type of pub food menu, one that was pre printed and NOT changed daily. Please note, our party consisted of my 7 year old son, my sister and her 14 year old son, having all had a lovely day at Stourhead (National Trust) prior to this big disappointment.More

great ambience, spectacular service, excellent staff and heavenly food. The rooms are clean and fresh. The bathroom is super clean. We arrived on a Sunday evening and the car park was full. we could see why as the restaurant was full. Later in the evening...we moved our car in the car park. If you are looking or a comfortable place to stay, this is it in the small village of Mere.More

It is never good when you walk into an empty pub at 5pm and as you go in all smiles, (2 adults and 2 children 14 & 7 years old) the first question you are asked is ‘have you booked?’. We said no but we’...were only interested in a drink and perhaps a light snack. The Lady then looked around the empty large area and after a pause said well you can have this table. A table nearest the door. Thinking that is wasn’t the most warmest of welcome but perhaps they were expecting several coaches to turn up (something that would explain the reaction) we said down, ordered our drinks and asked to see the menu. We were told we couldn’t even see it until 5.30pm as the menu changed everyday. As it was at this point 5.09pm we said ok, could we just have a look to see what was in it to get an idea, again we were told no, not until 5.30pm. Never had this happen before as even in places they don’t serve food until much later on allow you to look at the menu in order to decide on what you think of the food on offer, prices etc. Very strange that a pub refused to even let us have a look prior to 5.30pm! On the dot, at 5.30pm we were presented with the pre printed menu (that had certainly not been typed up as we waited) with the usual pub selection of food. As we had said we were only really looking for drinks and perhaps a snack, we decided there wasn’t anything that we fancied off the menu and more importantly given the reluctance of the staff to let us even lay eyes on it until 5.30pm on the dot. We were reluctant to spend any more money or time. We just ended up ordering 4 packets of crisps to go with our 4 drinks. We left feeling really disappointed after having had a lovely day out at nearby stourhead gardens. Certainly wouldn’t recommend or return.More

Thanks for taking the time for such a detailed review, and indeed your partner 2 days later! So no reason for not letting you see a menu....they do change from lunchtime to evening but the lady in question could have dragged out a lunchtime one...More

We were driving back from Plymouth. We decided that we aim to look to stop somewhere about 1pm. I came across the walnut tree Inn on TripAdvisor and I wasn't disappointed. We arrived without a booking... it's probably a good idea to book... you could...see the host was concerned how already over booked they already were. They offered us a table outside. Which was actually really nice. The sun was out, there was a bit of wind but it was ok. Others seemed to follow and join us. The tickets for the roasts came really quickly. My friend had the nut roast and she said it was really. She's never had one before, so it's now set the stand to follow. The beef was amazing. You got a good amount. You could help yourself to vegs and other bits. I liked the fact the plate was on a wooden chopping board... Nice touch. My friend's partner had all the meats which he really enjoyed. In my opinion the roast potatoes could have been better. Unfortunately from being outside, my food got cold quite quickly... which I know is not a fault from the restaurant. We just didn't know where we were going to manage to get to on the trip back to book. Staff were really friendly and attentive. A lovely feel from the pub. Seemed cosy and warm when we went in.More

this village pub is excellent and highly recommended. we stayed with friends for two nights and the rooms were very spacious ( oak and walnut), comfortable and welcoming. The staff were fully attentive and the food was excellent, breakfast was enormous and exceptionally good. If...visiting the gardens at Stourhead then this is a great location and only a short distance from the site.More

Visited for Sunday lunch with last minute booking. We were informed that the table booking would be for 1.5 hours which was fine for what we wanted. We sat in the Garden room and were a bit concerned we might be cold but in fact...it was lovely and light and the temperatures were fine. 3 of us had the carvery which was lovely. We had my elderly father in law with us who really does not eat much and it was possible to adapt his meal to suit him with no fuss or bother from the serving team The food was great with a fab selection of veg. The puddings were lovely also We were running a bit late on time but there was no suggestion of us being rushed out of the door Would definitely return here as the service, food and atmosphere was all top notchMore
