Although The Acorn is part of the Red Carnation hotel chain, it has cleverly managed to retain the traditional English charm of a village pub with a "lower" bar for the locals, even though some drive 30 minutes as regulars and we could certainly appreciate why. The international team are all very friendly and efficient, but are certainly not intrusive so create a welcoming and relaxed environment for everyone to enjoy. The wonderful food and interesting drinks list suited us down to the ground and, if like us, you enjoy a G&T try their specials with a twist (I had the "Violet" with blackberry gin, rosemary, dried lemon and blackberries on lots of ice with tonic ... wonderfully different!). The Menu is probably best described as traditional English pub food which has been elevated to very high restaurant standard but this has thankfully been achieved without being pretentious. The portions are generous, without being over-facing, and the local provenance of the ingredients is rightfully celebrated. Having enjoyed a starter and a main, we sadly had to draw the line at the desserts as we were replete ... certainly one to savour next time! The Wine list offers a great choice to suit all budgets and we enjoyed a bottle of our favourite Zinfandel, but this was by far the best that we have had to date.

See my review of Summer Lodge, the "big brother" of this village inn in Evershot. After the formality (and cost) of the hotel dining room, the relaxed ambience at the Acorn was a very pleasant alternative. The main bar room has a cosy country pub feel (we were actually allocated a table in the nondescript rear room but the staff moved us as soon as a table came free in the bar. Food is better than average pub fare - including, on the night we were there, grilled lobster and very good pork loin. A good selection of beers and wine, all at sensible prices and with helpful and attentive staff.

We just popped in for a drink and snack. The staff are very accommodating and found us a table quickly. They were getting ready for a wedding reception. It’s the sort of place we will definitely go back to again and have a meal. We have stayed at the Summer Lodge before and eaten there many times. It’s a fantastic hotel nearby. I believe this pub is associated with the hotel and if you visit both you can tell its run by someone who knows how to provide good food and great service without making it seem too formal. They have it just right. Well worth a try!!

For me it’s all about customer service. I was not disappointed. We went walking with two friends plus dogs. We were given a very warm, socially distanced welcome by staff wearing full visors. It was very easy to understand the information signs and find our way to a table. Everything was spotless, from the room, the seating, table and cutlery. We ordered a simple lunch of sandwiches and a ploughman’s lunch. One of the party was gluten free and another was a vegetarian. The sandwiches were delicious with fabulous local fresh bread. My friend said he couldn’t believe it was gluten free. We also loved the chutney and would have happily have purchased a jar if one was for sale. The environment felt very safe, with space between the tables. The toilets and outdoor areas were also scrupulously clean. No one went away feeling hungry and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Don’t go without sampling a much missed pint of local real ale. We will be returning soon.

I wouldn't call the place cosy, but it has a certain charm. The food was so good we went back twice running; open lasagna of rabbit, duck confit, roast pork the first evening, them whitebait and an extraordinary rib of beef the next. Good beer and wine and a 1970 Strathisla single malt too! The first evening the service was impeccable; the second, more along the lines of the enthusiastic student. But if you're in the area or staying in the pub or at the summer lodge, you have to eat here!

As a local I can vouch that the staff at The Acorn are consistently cheerful, welcoming and informed. Being alone last night I was grateful to be seated at a corner table, the perfect setting for a perfect meal that started with the crab and Cornish Yarg soufflé, which I could go on about for pages but won’t because the secret is already out of the bag about that one. (It’s amazing!) The duck breast that followed was cooked to perfection, which for me is pink, but the staff will ask how you want yours. Now to that dessert. The description as it appears on the menu is ‘Peach Mousse, white chocolate, mint crumble’. I will never forget the first time I ordered this and it appeared in front of me. I don’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone yet to have the experience, so I will say only that it is a work of art that brings together so much flavour and texture, it is hard to see how it could be improved upon. Except that last night I opted for the wine pairing, a late harvest Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and there it was; perfection.

Had wonderful lunch on a cool November day with my father, warmed up by a nice fire, great food and walked out a lot heavier than when I came in. The booking system online was easy, and when we arrived for an early lunch the fire was already lit and the atmosphere and service friendly and efficient. I hadn't expected to smash back 3 courses but these were polished off with ease, with the star being all three courses. The rabbit and leek lasagna was so tasty and light, and I plumped for the cod main course with a light south east-Asian influenced curry which was the best dish I have had in 2021 (and I eat a lot of food). Desserts which are made by the pastry chef were spot on, not being too sweet and heavy. The beer was good and will be back at some point for a roast or an evening meal followed by a walk through the village. Full marks, simply excellent and especially at the price.

After a pleasant drive through the Dorset countryside we arrived for our first visit to The Acorn Inn. The welcome was as warm as the log fire that burned in the dining room. There is a good menu that caters for most tastes. We decided on the scallops with black pudding followed by the duck breast. Both were excellent. The scallops were nicely seared and the black pudding made a great contrast in flavours. The duck was cooked to perfection, still pink it was delicious. This is a restaurant that we will return to, next time for dinner.

Beautiful food, excellent service and a friendly informal atmosphere in the bar. We had the pork and crackling Sunday lunch, carrots and parsnips were amazing as was all the veg and the red cabbage was the best I have tasted. The beef was also excellent. I can’t have onions because of a food intolerance, we rang ahead and when we got to the restaurant they remembered; I had special gravy no onions. I was very happy. Desserts the dark chocolate panna cotta and cheesecake. Smaller portion than I had expected but absolutely delicious.wines gins and beers excellent and amazing service. I have been many times before but not since the new chef started. We will go again, very soon.

Fabulous food and great service. Nearer to fine dining than gastro pub. Shortish a la carte menu of mainly local meat, lamb, pork etc. But daily specials of fish and lots of bar type food. Good wine list with reasonable prices. Some excellent wine/food pairing suggestions. All the staff are friendly and helpful.

Friendly and welcoming staff with food served in comfortable surroundings. I was expecting it to be busier as it was the week before Christmas but there was still a good atmosphere. I had the pork belly dish from the a la carte menu and my friend had the fish from the bar menu and both were superb. I will be back soon, hopefully.

We had a wonderful pre Christmas family lunch. The food was excellent, everything was so delicious but the broccoli starter and the apple pudding, exquisitely shaped like a miniature apple, were truly exceptional. I loved the friendly, professional service. Every time I’ve been for a meal here it’s been a delight.

I've eaten here for many years and usually standards are very high. I wonder if the pandemic has done some lasting damage though. On a recent lunch visit, while the service was excellent as usual I felt the food quality had slipped a bit, and with prices also up, I didn't think what we had was good value. This has never been a cheap place to eat but generous portions and very well cooked food offset that - both these were missing this time. So overall, disappointing.

Chose the Acorn after a recommendation and we were not disappointed. The pub was busy for a wet Thursday lunchtime. Service was attentive and unobtrusive. The menu was varied and covered all dietary needs. The food arrived in good time and was of a superb quality. We had dessert which is also highly recommended. Yes you will find cheaper places to eat but if you are prepared to pay that little bit extra then you will not be disappointed.

Staying locally, we ate one evening in this pub. Felt perfectly safe, well distanced from other patrons, and our meals were of a high quality. Good choice of beers, wines and spirits available. Highly recommended.
