I live in the nearby town of Bishop's Stortford but have to drive 15 miles to find a decent lunch. The Sword Inn Hand is it! We met friends today for a relaxed meal together & I was seriously impressed. Will definitely come again.

A cosy, relaxed and welcoming haven, filled with delicious smells, attentive and knowledgeable staff. We enjoyed magnificently flavoursome roast dinners (including one with tricky dietary requirements) and delightful cocktails. A spectacular Sunday spot and a must-visit.
Owner and Head Chef Jeremy greeted us on arrival along with Tom who welcomed us to sit at our reserved table near the log fire. We had pre-ordered our Christmas Roast Turkey meal with all the trimmings in November. Our meals were cooked to perfection...by Sous Chef Bill. Who during our meal came to the table to check all was well. Which of course it was as you would expected from this top of the range restaurant Inn. Once again we made our six monthly 100 mile round-trip journey to meet for lunch. We have been doing this for the last four years. All agreeing that this years meal would be very hard to beat. Well done Team! Thank you Jeremy, Bill, Meg and Tom for making us so welcome and for your attentive service served with a SMILE!! "Happy Christmas and New Year 2024 to you the Sword in Hand Team"More
One of my best pub meals ever. My wife and I came here for lunch without our children for a nice break. Service and food was brilliant. I had the monkfish scampi to start, my wife had the nduja croquettes. The batter on the scampi...was delicious. This was followed by the shepherds pie for my wife, and I had the venison. Service was attentive but not intrusive. I genuinely wanted to order almost everything on the menu. The overall service and quality of food was unquestionable. If you're thinking of eating here, do it!More
We went with 2 friends to this pub on Friday 1st December for a Christmas Lunch. The food was well presented and there was plenty of it. It was an exceptional meal which you could not fault at all. Is was extremely well cooked with...a good selection of vegetables, including the carrots which were so unusual that we even asked for the recipe! They catered for Gluten Free with lots of choices for deserts. We have been many times to this pub and will continue to do so as the staff always go the extra mile to make your visit something to remember.More
This pub has to be, by a country mile, my favourite, for a drink, or, especially for lunch. You are always made very welcome. I was delayed parking the car, and had just sat down when Meg came to take my drink order, advising on...all the hand-pump beers available. Our food orders were taken promptly by Tom, and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent, and a jolly time had by all. Well worth the trip from Letchworth!More
A family lunchtime birthday celebration made particularly special by the fantastic food and attentive service. The pub itself is situated in an unspoiled village with abundant charm yet only two minutes from the A10. We look forward to returning in the very near future.
Easy to book a table on line, we selected the date and time, also that we were celebrating a birthday. Its a very nice country pub in the village of Westmill I have to say we were very impressed, they even had a birthday card...on the table for my wife. The service was good and the food was excellent. What more can you ask for. They have menus to view with prices on their website so you can easily get an idea of what is available. Would we go again, most defiantly yesMore
Visited as part of a family and friends group of 11 people. The pub was very nice, staff were attentive and the portion size was huge and tasted very nice. Highly recommended.
My friends and I had an outstanding evening last night at The Sword Inn Hand. The October menu was full of choices that satisfied all six of us - each with different tastes. The lime and spiced butter with the sourdough was incredible, and the...mushroom croquettes was particularly delicious. The mains were all generously portioned and the lovely staff member who served us made several helpful and excellent recommendations. The atmosphere and staff were lovely and attentive at just the right times, and we all felt very happy and welcome. It was a return visit for me, but my five friends all thought it to be an excellent recommendation.More
visited today for family member’s 85th birthday, West Mill is where he used to visit family as a boy. Meal was excellent, place was clean and tidy. All staff were very attentive especially Tom & Ollie, and lastly we appreciated all the little touches for...the occasion making it special.More
Very nice and well kept pub/restaurant with pleasant and helpful staff however food very disappointing. We were a table of 4 we all ordered fish, 2 x hake, 1 stone bass and1 x battered fish with chips. All the fish was overcooked and on the...tough side and the chips, whilst they looked crispy, were hard. Interestingly, the first time we were asked if everything was ok was after we had paid. We could have complained during the meal but I’m not sure what they could have done at that stage to put things right and not spoil the evening. The food was not inedible just a poor standard for the money charged.More
The food was fantastic and the staff were lovely. The service was slow but they were very accommodating and I wouldn't hesitate to return. Their chips and side dish of potatoes were divine and I can't wait to eat them again! Special thanks to Jocelyn...who went out of her way for us!More
