We visited this tucked away restaurant with friends who had been previously and raved about it.
Overall we had a lovely evening, the food was really good and portion size was decent, the wine was also good and not overpriced and the surroundings were quirky and cosy and we will definitely look forward to returning and would have no hesitation in recommending to others. However ........
......The only slight negative was the service which whilst being very pleasant we did feel on occasions overlooked and invisible (we are not people who like over attentive service!). Examples of this was on arrival when we entered into a totally empty room not sure of where to go but then walked through to a lit room at the back which turned out to be the downstairs sitting/eating area. Fortunately, our friends had arrived and were enjoying a pre dinner drink but we sat for over 15 minutes without seeing one member of staff which was not a good welcome.
When we did eventually see a waitress I ordered a Martini with a SPLASH of lemonade and after another long wait it arrived in the form of a minuscule measure of Martini (no ice etc) and separate FULL large can of lemonade.
On ordering our food we asked to see a wine list but again had a long wait before it appeared. The waitress told us that she would return to take our order but never did.
We were seated in the lovely bar /dining area upstairs and apart from a table of two, we had the room to ourselves. There is another dining room which was full and oozed atmosphere.
Table service was at all times very slow but again pleasant and whilst we hate being rushed we felt that had it been just the two of us, it would have felt too long to wait and would have ruined the evening.
I’m not sure if the lacking in service was due to the young staff not having any drive or if it was due to understaffing but either way it wasn’t up to standard.
We have since talked about returning and will definitely do so but hope that the service issues are addressed.

We thought we'd booked. Turns out we hadn't (our fault) but they managed to find us a table. The Manager / Owner (?) asked us to wait for a while with the table empty (C19 restrictions) which was Ok, we sat elsewhere whilst perusing the menu, worked out Ok.
Whilst waiting we heard some other customers drop in and were turned away as they hadn't booked and no space available. So I was expecting a busy restaurant when we were seated.
We were in the back room upstairs. There were 4 other tables and 4 or 5 in the other room. Now, whilst I concede that these tables had reservation notices on them, in the whole time that we were there (about 45 minutes) there was just 1 other pair of customers in the whole cafe. The staff take the C19 restrictions and sanitising very seriously - there's a 1 way stairs system and sanitiser at the entrance. However it did appear that they could have juggled tables a little more (we left 10 minutes after one of the reserved tables should have arrived - and they hadn't). That little more flexibility would have increased custom for them.
Anyway, the food was exceptionally good quality. We'd stayed in town, room only, and I was glad I had. I had breakfast and it was much better than just about any hotel breakfast I have had. The ingredients were fresh and local. And very good value for money.
The waitresses were very friendly, service was good, the place is very clean and the decor is pretty cool.
If I'm back in town I'd definitely go back. The breakfast was so good, I imagine their other meals will be fantastic too

So late posting this! Apologies! We had a wonderful evening here in December as we arranged to have our staff Xmas dinner in the private function room.
It was no mean feat to serve a three course meal to over 24 people, with variety of dietary request with such professionalism and flair. The food was incredible quality, not just beautifully presented, but beautifully cooked, too. Everyone raved about the quality of the menu and the staff were wonderful too. Jane made sure our evening went without a hitch and we couldn't be happier. We will be back, maybe just the two of us rather than the whole squad next time! A wonderful gem of a place. The dishes are inventive but the kitchen delivers on flavour.

Food was of a very high quality; individually and freshly prepared. The service was attentive and friendly (the 'boss' kept an eye over the whole place and ensured servers were keeping on top of everything.
The setting is absolutely lovely, upstairs in a classic, quirky, backstreet Holmfirth building.
Highly recommended!

Had a gorgeous meal on the first Friday they were opened after lockdown. Felt very safe they all had masks, a one way system, and you keep your table for the whole night. Had some unique cocktails including an iced tea and another which I forgot the name but it has pink grapefruit in and was super refreshing. They also still have an excellent choice of gin and wines. The food was amazing and what was even better is they catered for me as a vegan (we did ask when we booked to double check). I had kaarage cauliflower which was just as good as if I got it from a proper Japanese eatery. Then I had tandoori chickpeas with flat bread, the best mango chutney and vegan cheese which they flavoured so it actually tasted amazing which is hard to do with vegan cheese. Then I had rice pudding with rhubarb compote and rhubarbs sorbet which could have been mistaken for ice cream it was thick and delicious.
My mum and her partner also raves about their food which was mussels (my mum particularly liked how flavourful the source was and the bread was really good) and they had beautifully presented with the taste to match mains.
I have already booked to go back again with my partner as although that time was with my family it would also make a great intimate date venue.
The staff are also incredibly friendly and make an effort to remember you so you feel properly welcomed.

I visited on saturday evening with friends and wasn't disappointed. The food was delicious. We were served warm bread with brown butter before our meal it was so nice. Followed by fried chicken thigh for starters and others had the monkfish starters. Followed by the duck pie with duck breast. Pork with bon bons and seabass. Dessert chocolate torte and cheesecake. We demolished the lot. The service was great and loved the decor. Would definitely recommend eating here.

We visited the restaurant on a Saturday night and was greeted by a male waiter, he was extremely welcoming, personable and explained how the restaurant operated with the new covid restrictions. This was brilliant and realised how well it was arranged and organised.
We had cocktails to start recommended by the waitress as to what I like and they were delicious! My husband had the Malbec which he also really enjoyed.
Service was brilliant and as the restaurant filled, we were still received the same service. Nothing was too much trouble and plates were cleared away promptly after eating.
Food wise the whole menu looked delicious and we started with mussels, brisket and olives. All were equally amazing, I have to mention the bread which came with the mussels was gorgeous, made and baked on site with their own butter. It was stunning!!!!
For mains we decided to both have the lamb which came pink (they did ask us if pink was ok) it completely melted like butter when cut. Sides included gorgeous new potatoes in a mint/butter drizzle. We also had a size of truffle and Parmesan chips which were home made and completely delicious- we didn’t want it to end!
If you’re local or coming into holmfirth or the surrounding areas it’s a place to try. Decor is gorgeous, cosy but spacious and some lovely views of the old holmfirth buildings.
We can’t wait to come back!

This is our first time in the area, so had no idea on great places to eat that were dog friendly. Found the whippet and pickle, so glad we did. Had a delicious lunch there, very well priced, hot, fresh and full of flavour, we couldn't ask for more. They were very friendly and attentive to all of their customers. Dogs were welcomed and given water, a thoughtful touch. The decor was funky and relaxing. Will definitely go again when next in the area, would highly recommend a visit.

After not eating out in so long, this was a fabulous way to get back to it! If you're nervous about social distancing indoors this is a great place to go - there was plenty of space between tables, a one way system, and everything was smooth and well thought-out.
The vegetarian options were great, such a treat when so often they are an afterthought. The meat options were fantastic also. We had the buttermilk chicken and cauliflower starters, followed by the lamb and tandoori haloumi.
The wine list was plentiful, the food was awesome and our server Luke deserves a special mention for being so lovely and attentive!
All in all excellent evening, cannot recommend highly enough - make sure you book ahead!

My girlfriend went searching for restaurants and found this little delight. From walking in to walking out the experience was exceptional. We had a starter, main and pudding and each course was beautiful. It isn't a big menu but sometimes that is very helpful because it usually means the food is top notch! The staff was very courteous and very attentive while not been intrusive! Will 100% be going back there because it was the best food I have had in a very long time eating out.

Fantastic food and a great selection of wine.
20 of us booked here to eat, and with that many people you often have to compromise; not at the Whippet and Pickle - all plates were outstanding. Very yummy indeed.
We had booked the kino for a movie too - it’s a great idea for a get together with friends.
Friendly staff, fab food, pretty surroundings and good wine. Highly recommend.

We were recommended to visit this restaurant by friends. Sadly and it grieves me, but we were very disappointed.
We went in as the place opened at 1000hrs and ordered 3 Full English breakfasts. Now mindful that we were the only people in the restaurant, all 3 meals came out on cold plates and to boot the food was cold too. I am not even convinced that it was all freshly cooked. What the chef was thinking, goodness knows. He must have been aware!
The waiting staff were pleasant and to be fair our bill was reduced.
Frankly, the situation should not have occurred!
We always give a place a 2nd chance, but it will not be for a while.

I went for a family meal with my brother and his wife and my partner. Having not been out for awhile due to covid 19 we wanted to have a little catch up. We where seated and waited awhile for drinks orders and the place was not even busy same goes for the food orders. We are chatting away nothing loud just general chit chat, the waiter comes over asking us to be quite which we found quite rude to say the least this put our backs up immediately we ate our food paid the bill and was not even offered our change after our overlay priced food and nothing fantastic. Wont be going again. Think these people need to look at the economy we are in and treat customers with a bit more respect. With this kind of behaviour in business it wont last too long thats even if your at the top of your game and these are far from that.

We were very disappointed with our visit to this restaurant recently. Despite it being recommended to us, we found the service lacking on our visit. Upon arrival we were seated quickly and then left to peruse the menu for about 20 to 25 mins. When someone eventually came to take our order, she asked us what drinks we’d like. I said that we were ready to order drinks and food, as we’d had plenty of time to look and that we were all very hungry. The waitress then told us that she had been told only to take our drinks order because there was a larger table who had just arrived and they wanted to take their food orders first. We were told that we’d have to wait our turn. Then whilst we were bemusedly awaiting until the time we could place our order, another table were seated next to us and their food order was taken immediately. When this was queried we were just told “I dunno why their food order is being taken, it shouldn’t be”. Finally we managed to order our food - most of it was actually pretty good to be fair. Although the sausages were pink in the middle, so I left them and the coffee was unpleasant.
Please don’t make customers wait in some kind of unfair queueing system. It was a strange brunch outing to say the least.

Second visit recently and consistently great! The two people looking after us were attentive, professional and always there when needed. Covid 19 procedures all in place. And now the food - up there with The Dyeworks which is my personal bench mark but here has better vegetarian choices. Too much choice from a small but perfectly formed menu (I prefer it when the menu isn’t too large as I know they’ll do what they’re offering really well). Haven’t been able to fit a pudding in yet so am going to have to go again!
Book in advance but well worth it. A hidden gem in our small town ❤️
