Visited the Winking Stag with my lovely friend to celebrate her birthday and we had a wonderful evening! We were greeted and immediately taken to our table that was tucked into a cosy corner. We ordered a few small plates which were all delicious, along...with some tasty cocktails! Really well thought through menu. Excellent bao buns and nice to choose meat/fish/veg options with many of the dishes. Nice choice of cocktails and other drinks Very attentive service and dishes served at a nice pace. The restaurant was very busy and had a good...atmosphere without being too loud. Thought we were booking a restaurant from the website and trip advisor reviews. It was very loud and pub like on arrival. Asked to move to a different table and originally they said they were full then moved us to a slightly quieter area. Food...took 1.5 hours to come out and then the order was incorrect, was average at best and overpriced. We were offered complementary drink and a replacement order which was a nice gesture. Had to cancel last minute due to illness, messaged the restaurant. Their website states they would charge £5 cancellation fee which is fair enough, Instead they charged £20. Very sneaky way of making money.More

One of Huddersfield’s “Little Gem’s” … absolutely amazing! We had a party there for a birthday - Tom was great to deal with beforehand and always answered emails promptly. Then on the night we were made to feel so welcome! The food is delicious… I...mean, so good! Many thanks to the team for making our meal with you on Sunday such a fantastic evening. It is a while since we last visited and it was great to see that the service and quality were still top notch, if not better. The team...catered for our needs expertly and showed a great understanding of both the cocktail and food menu, which was very refreshing and comforting to know - especially with food intolerances. The food menu was varied and the dishes were delicious - especially the cauliflower 'wings'. Rang to check there was available tables checked to see what time kitchen closed told to just turn up as phone down and mobile phone holder not there arrived at 7.20 asked for a table to be told they would have to check in the...kitchen was a little surprised as on web site kitchen closes at 8.30. Ordered one starter arrived and 2 plates to share had to aske at the bar about the second starter to be told second one would be 5 mins waiters could have informed us on delivering first starter food was great but shame we had to eat out starters at different times would have thought professional chef,s could do timings on food as the place was not busyMore

Went for the first time with family for a birthday treat. I have to say the food was excellent and the owner was extremely pleasant and helpful. We had never been before and didn't really understand how to order. The owner then came over and...even though it was super busy he could not have been more helpful and stayed with us until we got the concept. After that it was perfect, great food and lovely atmosphere.More

We stumbled on the Winking Stag on a visit to Holmfirth. The food, drinks and service was amazing - spot on! The squid gets a particular mention - my son loved it so much we ordered a second portion but that said, everything we ordered...was fab. We will definitely be back.More

Winking Stag is a gorgeous little restaurant and bar located in the heart of Holmfirth. The space is intimate and cosy so definitely book ahead to be guaranteed a table at busy times. The food concept is Japanese tapas offering a mixture of small plates...and large plates- some of the large plates can even be ordered as small plates. This is our favourite way to dine so we were really looking forward to the food. The kitchen is small so food comes out as and when its ready but we prefer that when eating tapas. Drinks wise there are classic cocktails plus a decent amount of seasonal specials that cater more towards the Japanese flavours. The staff were genuinely amazing, really friendly, on hand with menu recommendations, checking on everyone- we went on a fully booked friday evening and they did a great job. The menu has so many options that we struggled to choose but our highlights included Massamam Mussels and Clams (Seafood steamed in Massamam Curry and Coconut Milk, Spring Onion and Coriander) This one was a little different to the norm in that the mussels were in a curry broth 😍 i cant tell you how delicious this was- it was like a Thai/ Japanese fusion of flavours. The clams and mussels were coated in the Massamam and they added a great kick of heat to the dish. The portion was very generous and the seafood was super fresh. The sauce was really coconut heavy and so fragrant- we made sure there wasnt a drop left! Instead of bread, it came with Bao Buns to mop up the sauce, which was a great touch and fitting to the Japanese theme. Our favourite dish of the night for sure Five Spice Venison Kofta, Pomegranate Molasses, Sriracha Mayo Venison is a tricky meat as it can be quite bland without the right seasoning but they nailed it here- the aniseed flavours were there but not overpowering and the garlic shone through complimented by a hint of fresh mint and sweet pomegranate. I didn’t have high hopes for a bottomless brunch but the one here is INCREDIBLE. Loved every dish we had , the cocktails were lovely and the staff were really attentive so there was no waiting round with empty glasses. 100% would recommend.

We went for food at The Winking Stag after previously visiting pre pandemic. The food is still the same high quality and love how you can still select larger dishes as small plates. Me and my husband shared a number of dishes. Fave dish for...me was the pork baos and wings. The cocktails were really good and staff were friendly and attentive. Thanks for a lush afternoon!More
