Due to the earthquake we detoured through Hamner Springs and stumbled across No 31. It was amazing! The waitress was one of the best hosts we have ever had, she was so friendly and helpful. We took our 15 month old son and they prepared special mini meals for him. He adored the staff and devoured his risotto. Great food,... More

Professional table service, a great menu and variety of beer, wine and spirits. Meat lovers will especially enjoy the menu whilst there is also something for non red meat eaters. My wife had the blue cod which was delicious when she eventually got around to asking whether I wanted a taste. The scallop entrée was really good, duck pate very... More

No 31 was recommended to us by a stranger and we loved it. Found it hard to choose from the small and enticing menu as it was all so tempting. Starters of scallops and pork belly were delicious followed by succulent blue cod and rack of lamb. The presentation of everything was skilled and intriguing and the suggested Riesling complemented... More

Enjoyable dinner though I should have picked the dishes I really enjoy like seafood and duck. My friends raved about their fish, venison and duck, scallops, pork belly ... What was I thinking when I choose the pear n goats cheese entree, nice to taste / share though no one else wanted to share. The entrees were on the small... More

Only two days after a major 7.5 earthquake we had a lovely dinner. Hare, pork, blue cod, and some excellent local wine. Service was very friendly and professional.

Really friendly service and lovely food, especially the puddings. Wine is reasonably priced and a nice local range. Good ambience and decor.

This restaurant has it all - amazing food, great local wine, good service and nice ambience. We had a day trip from Christchurch and I was hoping this dinner was going to be the highlight. And it has more than delivered to my expectations! If we go back to Hanmer Springs, I will definitely come back.

What a wonderful dinner we had a #31. Two of us had the duck which was divine and the other's in our party had the beef and fish which were also wonderful. We all had a lovely Creame Brulee for dessert.

Thank Sontie

The former "Laurels" Restaurant re-opened its doors in May 2012, as "No.31 Restaurant & Bar", an A la Carte Restaurant specializing in modern European/New Zealand Cuisine. The restaurant is set in a quaint character cottage on the main street of Hanmer Springs. French doors open out to a lovely courtyard for alfresco dining and an outside bar leaner for pre-dinner drinks/cocktails in the warmer months. Inside the restaurant it is very homely, with an open fire, wooden floors and candle-lit tables. Award winning chef/owner, Michael van de Wiel ( previous chef/owner at "The Old Post Office Restaurant", Hanmer Springs, for 12 years). Fully Licensed and NOT BYO. Reservations Recommended.
