Expected great things from this place after staying nearby and told it was popular with locals (always a good sign!). First impressions were great. A light airy restaurant right on the beach in a secluded spot with large glass window panels that could be moved...out of the way to creat an open feel with a superb view of the sea.
Starters were excellent, nice to have a taramasalata that wasn’t a lurid pink!
My partner had a pork steak which was beautifully seasoned with some of the best (clearly home-cut and home-cooked) chips I’ve ever had.
But my mussels arrived and they were in a tomato and feta sauce (when I’d clearly asked for the option steamed in white wine, memorable as they initially thought I was trying to order a drink!). I was told this was the waiter’s personal favourite and his typical order for a meal out which is great to know, but not what I wanted as I can’t eat tomato sauce!
The replacements arrived and the portion was not only tiny (more the size of a starter, not as a main course, and not at the prices charged), but almost two-thirds of the mussels were unopened (a major red flag that they should not be eaten). The odd one or two is to be expected, but this was the majority of the portion and should never have left the kitchen.
Admittedly I should have complained, but having already had to return an incorrect order, I’d lost the will. We were not asked what we thought of our meal, nor did the waiter seem to notice the rather obvious lack of consumption. We simply paid up and left.
A real shame as not what I expected either from reviews or from word of mouth or our first impressions on arrival.
A fancier looking interior perhaps at this place, but I’d opt for the other local restaurant (also popular with locals) which was slightly less fancy in appearance (but better food), and go back to the Galini Tavern instead.More
