My daughter and I decided on a whim to go out for dinner as a treat. The atmosphere was nice, the staff were really welcoming, polite & friendly. The restaurant itself was extremely clean and pleasant. We both ordered creamy garlic mushrooms on toast to start, followed by a standard & large carvery. We had the half chicken rotisserie -the skin was to die for! Or almost. Once I started eating, it was burnt black, to the point where the bones were crunchy on the wing. It was shame because it spoiled the meat as that was far too dry and stringy. Yorkshire pud was nice but a little greasy underneath, the stuffing balls were dry and hard. Whilst there was a good selection of vegetables, some of them were either dried up or too soggy. However, the parsnips, carrots, roasties & sprouts were lovely, apart from mostly being cold when we came to eat. It didn't help matters the plates being cold either. Needless to say, we didn't eat much of our main meals at all and were extremely disappointed. When the waitress came to clear the table she obviously saw how much food we'd left and brought the manager over. I can honestly say that lady is an absolute credit to JW LEES. She couldn't have been more apologetic (WITHOUT being patronising) if she tried, her customer service skills are second to none. Exactly how they should (& used to) be. The matter was dealt with quickly and fairly without hesitation. Thank you so much again.

Went midweek for the carvery. The service was good (except initially where we had to ask them not to sit us right next to an arguing couple despite the place being practically empty) Food was ok but the service is slowed considerably by having to wait while the one person doing the serving works his way (slowly) along the pots of food. You need to either give customers gloves / serviettes to select their own vegetables or have two servers - one for the meat and another for the rest. The queens arms in audenshaw can manage JT so you can too.

I've been here a good few times with both family and friends and in general this place is one of the best places to go for a carvery. Really tasty food and great portions at prices that you really can't grumble at. The wait staff and those serving at the carvery are always polite and friendly and honestly can't be faulted. I'd 100% recommend giving this place a try if you haven't already. Now, unfortunately if you're going to be going for anything other than the carvery, be prepared for a less than mediocre experience. The 3 times I or my family have been and ordered anything off the standard menu, we've had HUGE waiting times. Last Sunday we waited over an hour before any food hit our table and we've previously had similar wait times for simple things like deserts. More so, the food quality just isn't there the way it is with the carvery. The standard menu is pretty limited, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that means that what arrives on your table is good quality, but that's not the case here sadly. Menu items are also routinely unavailable which limits it further. My advice: As the carvery is clearly your bread and butter, create other menu items that can incorporate some of what you're already cooking or things you can prepare in bulk beforehand to lessen the strain on the kitchen during busy periods. A decent soup and sandwich deal would definitely appeal to those seeking a lighter lunch alternative to a carvery and you've already got beef, pork etc at hand for those. Individual sized pizzas are also really quick to get out the kitchen as long as the dough is prepped and ready in the morning. I'm sure your chefs are aware of this so just let them come up with some simpler ideas. My final criticism is somewhat minor but it didn't go unnoticed. The wait staff are all extremely well dressed, groomed and all look very professional. However the 2 ladies greeting people at the door on Sunday looked a little out of place. I have nothing against a spaghetti strap tank top, but it felt inconsistent with the other staff and I honestly thought they were fellow customers at first. Keep pushing for greatness guys, because you're 95% there.

Thank you for your review! Our menus are devised by head office but i will send your feedback to them. We do do a soup and sandwich offer but that is on the pub lunch menu which runs in the week. Look forward to welcoming you back to the Sheldon soon! Kind Regards Nikki

I have just been to have a carvery and sirloin steak meal When I went to pay for them there was no mention they only had gammon or beef When I asked the chef at the carvery is there anything else replied busy day sold out but this was a 5pm on Sunday evening no apology This seems a bit early to be sold out . When the sirloin steak it came with a very small jacket potato and a handful of mushrooms you had to pay extra for onion rings (at£ 14.95) we approached the manager about the steak meal that is the right portion size but usually serve it on a small plate not a good answer .We asked about the lack of choice on the carvery he also said had busy day again no apologies given I said I put a complaint in he said go then I changed to a cheese onion pie the chips we’re not crispy more liked they had just been blanched and were all small broken bits ,peas cold and sauce as well The chef behind the counter was sweeping during service not good I think in my opinion it is going down hill not recommended

Usually good.. Lunch menu is limited, nothing really "light" ie sandwich or wrap. Friend had small fish n chips at about £10. Seemed OK I had chicken ceaser salad, I ate but it wasn't nice And at £10 a rip off. Chicken dry (prob left over from the buffet night before) lettuce tasted old and so much mayo squuezed on it.. Not good. The carvery is usually good but we must have been too early for that. On leaving saw it being served and ashamed how much food on a plate that the couple didn't eat greedy!!!! But my meal.. No... Was not good.. The waitress was untidy inattentive and unhelpful

Very poor service, table of 7, 2 people ordered chicken burgers which they had to scrape the burnt bits off, another had chicken portion which couldn't be cut through with a knife and 1 lasagna dish missed of the order which we had to wait 30 minutes for by which time most other people had finished their meals and when It did arrive it was not nice at all. Then when checking bill had a extra drink charged for that was also missing off a drinks order! The carvery was nice though. All in all not a good experience at this establishment and we will not be visiting again in the near future.

Hi, Thank you for your review. We did apologise on the evening you were in and compensated your bill accordingly for your dissatisfaction. As i explained to you on the evening we are struggling with kitchen equipment failure which made for a slower service than we would have liked. The media is a buzz at the moment with how industry is struggling to recruit new team members as a lot of have left the industry during lockdown. Also whilst our team were claiming furlough we could not begin the recruitment process as the government would have stopped the claims. I apologised for the drink discrepancy and corrected the error immediately. I hope your future visits to others within our industry you show compassion and understanding that during these restrictions our service is stretched and we are doing the best that we can. Kind Regards Olivia Makin General Manager

Been here a couple of times, and I must admit had received relatively good service previously. However bank holiday Monday wasn't up to scratch at all, upon entering we gave our name having previously booked the day before and a pleasant young lady greeted us and confirmed our party of 3 diners and explained about the one way system in place, including waitress only service. We then had to wait 4-5 minutes to be taken to our table and was passed on to the care of a young man who handed us a menu each, we didn't see this man again. After a good 10 minutes a young lady finally came to take our order this included drinks and mentioned that it's a hour wait for food, to which I replied surely not the carvery? as there was no one stood there, with this the young waitress said she'd have to check, luckily this delay didn't include the carvery. After a period of time our drinks at last was brought to the table by a 2nd waitress we asked how we go about ordering the carvery would we need tickets etc, she apologised and and indicted for us to go and make our selections. The carvery was nice enough, although the veg could of been hotter. At no time did anyone ask if everything was ok or ask if we wanted another drink or even checked if we cared for desserts, it was the lack of communication that was so annoying, the whole experience totally failed to meet our expectations, very poor customer service here. We left feeling extremely disappointed as it was the first time we had been out in a long while.

The place needs a good refurb. Food served was not value for money did not even fill the plate. The meal was cold, with still frozen corn on the cob. Spoonful of coleslaw placed in a very small a small piece of lettuce. The fries were also cold. Also order fish chips and mushy peas whereby fish was overcooked and chips were hard and not hot either. Informed staff corn frozen with very little response other than will get another piece.

I was under the impression that a carvery was so named because all the meat is carved. On previous visits there was beef, gammon and turkey and a chef carving them; but yesterday we were advised there was beef, gammon or half a chicken from a rotissorie. My mum and I decided to have the chicken but as it was basically a whole chicken it had to be put on a separate plate, which I had to put on our table as I couldn't manage that as well as putting the rest of my dinner on the other plate. It was a bit farcical - we ended up taking the chicken home for our tea! You could argue that we got our money's worth but I'd rather just have a traditional carvery. Also, there was not enough gravy and plates were cold. Staff were very attentive and friendly though.

There was a large group of us and they were very accommodating, we even had a coeliac child and the head chef came out to talk him through the menu, his options and her recommendations, she even brought the food to him herself to ensure that he knew his food was safe to eat. The carvery was also very well priced, very large portions and very tasty. Even though the chicken was slightly on the drier side, I would 100% come again and recommend this place to a friend, especially if you have special dietary requirements or want a carvery with MASSIVE portions :)

Visited with a couple of friends on a Sunday evening for as spontaneous carvery - expecting it would be busy so we were willing to wait. On arrival we were told we’d be waiting 30 mins for a table despite some being completely empty and ready to go. When we were about to order the at the till, one of the servers told us that they were stopping serving the carvery? We hung around for a few minutes deciding where else to go instead, only to then be told they were continuing to serve again. It was completely misleading and so unorangised. One of the staff carving meats behind the counter was serving a younger boy who didn’t want any meat, and she kept saying to him loudly “you really don’t want any meat?! are you mad, can’t believe you don’t want any meat!”. I don’t understand why she couldn’t accept his choice and was in disbelief about it, she made it out as it if was criminal. He could’ve been a veggie/vegan! and if that was me, i’d have been embarrassed. The veg wasn’t pleasant, and some of it cold, quite a lot of gravy wasn’t available. Not a great experience really.

Exceptional food, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. We booked in over the phone with short notice on Sunday at 1 o'clock, but they kindly squeezed us in. The food was absolutely beautifully cooked, portions were very generous. It was the best Sunday carvery I have had in a long time. The two of us each had a large carvery. I had half a rotisserie chicken and some roast beef, my mother had a lamb shank and some roast pork, everything was tender and juicy and perfectly cooked. the vegetables were not overdone or soggy. the front-of-house staff were all friendly. I cannot overstate my satisfaction.

Booked in August to guarantee an Xmas Eve table. Arrived today, ordered drinks and only when seated were advised carvery and festive menu only (festive menu was carvery, salmon or veggie option). None us wanted carvery so left. We heard staff telling customers the limited menu was due to staffing shortages which is fair enough given the pandemic circumstances, but they should have contacted bookings to advise them in advance. Called at the Royal George, Greenfield, instead, who were busy but fitted us in. Lovely food and atmosphere. Really poor customer service.
