Disappointing compared with last visit

I last visited Mr C's two years ago and remembered the traditional fish and chip fayre with mouthwatering delight. However, yesterday, on a wet February afternoon I was not so impressed. First of all the price. £9 for haddock and chips with tea and bread and butter. The mushy peas were extra and also expensive. This is quite a lot to pay for a British staple. I wouldn't have minded so much but the quality of the meal was not top notch. Both the chips and the fish were not hot enough when our plates arrived at the table. The batter was not fresh and crunchy. If I had had the plate at home I would have stuck it in our microwave for a minute - just to bring it up to a decent temperature. The waitress staff at Mr C's were all friendly and efficient and the dining area is a nice, clean environment to dine in. However, next time I happen to be in Selby I won't be hurrying back to Mr C's. For £9 + £1 for mushy peas I expect something close to fish and chip heaven and that is not what we got this time round.

Very tasty fish and chips, friendly staff

Really enjoyed the light bite fish and chips, which was the perfect portion size for me. Fresh, not greasy at all and liked that they know the provenance of the fish and the local potatoes. The staff were friendly, a little disorganised but appeared to be training the 2nd front of house lady and they were juggling a large preorder. Clearly well liked by the regular customers in front of me. Thought it was good value and very tasty. Would go back if in the area again

Order in person for fresher fish

I've used Mr C's twice in the past few weeks and have been surprised how good it is. The first time I ordered in person. The fish was really good, as good as you get in Flamborough or Filey, and the little one's chicken nuggets were real chicken. What a bonus! For the second visit I used the app for click and collect. As always with these things it meant the fish wasn't fresh out the oven as I didn't time my arrival to coincide perfectly. It was still really nice, but the better was a little soggy due to its wait. We'll definitely be going again.

Service in shop fantastic - delivery is dreadful

The produce from this store is excellent but the customer service is dreadful, especially when it comes to their deliveries. Time and again when I’ve ordered via the app for delivery something goes wrong and today was no exception. I ordered fish’s and chips twice, simple you would think? No. My delivery arrived more than 20 mins late and upon being handed the bag I looked inside only to find nothing resembling my order. I informed the delivery girl who proceeded to take the bag back to the car for her and the driver to look through and was then informed that I’d received the wrong order and my correct delivery would be with me shortly and off they drive. Some four minutes later they were back with the same bag, stating it was the correct order and that a new chef had wrapped it differently. I refused to take it due to them both handling the food inside and I was informed they’d arrange for my order to be delivered shortly. Some 30 minutes later (still no delivery) I received a phone call from ‘Amy’ who informed me that she’d only just learnt of the problem and wanted to know what had occurred. I explained the situation and she apologised for the lateness of the delivery and offered to send my order back out (I was under the impression that it was already on its way wasn’t it??). Suffice to say I wasn’t happy with our conversation, by now my order was over one hour late and it didn’t seem like my issues were going to be resolved anytime soon so I cancelled my order and again I can honestly say that I won’t be purchasing from Mr C’s again.

Disappointing service

I’ve been a customer of Mr C’s for over 12 years and have always been super impressed not only by the service but also the food. But today I received really poor customer service and I’d like to report it. There are no signs to say “only one person at once” in the shop. On arrival given there was only one person being served I entered and was quickly and very rudely barked at “only one at a time”. So I waited until he had left. I entered again and was told “I’m serving someone else”. So again I went outside. Finally on being told I would now be served I ordered, could see she was preparing the wrong order so pointed out I was being given the wrong thing. To which the server rudely bit back at me “I didn’t hear your order properly”. No “oh sorry , these masks are a bit annoying aren’t they”, or “no problem I’ll change that for you”. Seriously, bring it down a notch as I was only saying you were giving me the wrong order. Soooo disappointed with the service today which at any other time over the past 12 years has been fantastic. These 2 servers in my opinion do not fit with the Mr C brand.

From the moment I walked in I thought this isn't going to be positive. A smell of urine was the first thing, then the tables that's weren't 100% clean was also off putting. But as we wanted fish and chips stayed and hoped the food would resurrect the negatives. Unfortunately it just got worse we both ordered the large fish and chips. But when they came it was more a small or medium, after asking the waitress we ordered the large she replied I'll charge you for a medium. They must of known it was a medium but were just trying it on. The coffee I ordered was like dishwasher and definitely not the brand that was advertised. In these trying time a bussiness should be trying hard to make customers happy and welcome. We will never go back.

Rude staff!

Couldn’t select a collection time on the app, was told over the phone that I must be selecting a time that’s not available. Would be helpful if it actually said that rather than letting you get all the way through ordering and then it just not allowing payment to go through. So ordered over the phone to pay on collection. Fine. Arrived and asked for salt and vinegar on food (hadn’t been offered on the phone), woman was clearly annoyed by this saying she’d have to reopen everything to put the salt and vinegar on, maybe should’ve asked on the phone to avoid inconveniencing yourself. Got home to discover we’d been given gravy instead of curry sauce and live too far away to drive back, if we were closer would’ve just returned the whole lot and got a refund. Woman was rude and unpleasant and honestly this place is so overrated, the app isn’t good enough either. Wouldn’t go back.

Very disappointed

Been going here on and off for over 20 years and it has been a bit hit and miss. Today’s takeaway fish and chips was not good. The fish was really small and mainly batter, the fish was grey and did not taste great. I removed the fish from the batter and there was just enough to satisfy the cat. Very disappointed and will not be visiting again for a long time would rather travel further afield for something more enjoyable. I like to support local businesses but with the cost of living rises I need to make wise choices when eating out or getting a takeaway.

Called in with my wife Christine and we weren,t disappointed, we both had Haddock n chips. Chips were piping hot and the fish was delicious, all well cooked and best we,ve had for a long time. Staff all friendly and polite.

We visit here often and this visit was a huge disappointment. I always ask for a well done fish. This is never a problem elsewhere, however here is seems as if I’m speaking a different language. It rarely comes well done and it’s usually the same as the other fish we order. Also, despite prices increasing, the size of the fish is shrinking. The fish looked like a child’s portion. The staff in the restaurant lack professionalism and it seems to be run on an ad hoc basis. Most strange was of running a business.

Nice food but avoid eating in if you can't eat very much due to surgery has a friend was refused a child's portion side

The Food was Very nice and good portions too and reasonably priced. The only reason i have rated it a 2 star is because one staff forgot my curry sauce and still tried charging for it and also a friend who had gastric surgery a few years ago and can only manage very small portions tried to order a kids fish bites and chips which isn't available on the main menu was refused it. And the staff looked down on her and spoke to her rudely.

I attempted to order a fish and chip delivery for this evening for ourselves and 2 friends who are on the vulnerable list. No delivery slots appeared to be available so in desperation I sent a message via the message link on Facebook. I soon got a reply asking me for my phone number. The lady rang me immediately and took my order - she could not have been more helpful. The fish and chips were delicious and enjoyed by all. Thank you for such excellent service.

Not been here for a while but decided to have lunch mid week. It wasn’t too busy so able to sit where we liked, staff friendly and welcoming. Our order was taken promptly and food arrived within 20mins. Great sized portions and obviously freshly cooked, lovely crispy batter. We had regular fish and chips, scampi and chips and sausage and chips with a drink each £30. We thought this was reasonable, we will be back soon and recommend to all !!

The Restaurant clearly is not open

Mr C's has a fantastic reputation for quality fish and chips. We entered the restaurant and proceeded to be ignored by the staff. There were no clear waiting staff. Everyone was busy preparing take away. After a long wait menus were passed to us. We indicated we knew what we wanted but the waiter ignored that point and got back to preparing take away orders. In the end we just left. If the restaurant is open then Staff the restaurant? Else close it to avoid disappointment.

Poor service, late delivery, items missing. 5 phone calls chasing then after meal another call for refund of missing items. £75

Ordered at 4.45 online for 5.30pm delivery. At 5.43 phoned as app said it had been delivered. I was told it had just been wrapped and would be with us in 6 minutes. Phoned at 5.56 and asked if the food would still be hot and whe it would be delivered. I was told it was in the hot cabinet and would be with us in 30 seconds. 9 minutes later at 6.05 my wife looked at the bag which said with brown bag which had not been delivered with multiple sauces and drinks for grandson. I phoned at 6.06 asked for refund to be told I needed to have my card so I said I would phone back when we finished. The food was only warm, certainly not hot so wasted money on 5 jumbo haddock and remaining foor for our usa visitors. Worst service we have ever received. Late only warm food with items missing. So 6 phone calls to sort our meal which was poor at best. Hmmm less than impressed today
