A quick review for a working lunch with a long standing pal, this was also my return to a once very favoured pub. ‘The Jolly’ was my ‘not so’ local 20 years when I lived in and around the Chippenham area. Since moving away I don’t visit as often, and of course I no longer know as many of the ‘locals’ as I once did. The pub was much as I remember, being always clean and tidy, and a place where you feel welcomed and comfortable and would take your partner, or go for a drink with the lads. Before choosing a table to dine at we had drinks, my pal had a soft drink but I decided on a medium glass of white wine. The Jolly offers two white by the glass, a Pinot Grigio and a Sauv Blanc. I chose the latter and was very happy with my choice. It was served well chilled, had a reasonable bouquet, and was pleasant on the palate. We had decided on a snack and my pal ordered the smoked salmon and prawn salad, which was quite a large dish full, with a generous portion of new potatoes. It did look good with plenty of salmon and prawns and it was all eaten with due enjoyment. I ordered the ham, egg and chips, always a favourite, especially as I was aware that the ham was always good here at the Jolly. I was not disappointed as the ham was excellent and plentiful, with the chips adding a bit of hunger staving carbs, plus two nicely cooked fresh eggs. For £8.95 it is a great snack meal and represented tremendous value. The young lady serving us was very pleasant and engaging and meals arrived promptly. The pub wasn’t very busy, understandable on a what was a Monday lunchtime, but that did provide a good venue for a business style lunch.

A charming local pub with great food (especially the roast Beef which I had today) and atmosphere. The menu is varied and I always find something appetising on it be that from the main menu or the specials which change frequently - a firm favourite of mine is the Chorizo Chicken, Yum! It has good mix of locals and visitors gives this pub a good vibe but what really sets it aside are the people be it the waiting staff or the extremely hospitable Landlord/Landlady. It is clear this pub is run firmly with the customers at the heart of everything they do. Very happy to be able to return to a thriving independent local pub after much of this Year has been a write of, keep up the great work! Highly recommend - not to be missed....

Travelling back from Somerset to Hampshire, we called in for Sunday lunch. What we received for our Sunday lunch was superb. Generous portions and beautifully cooked. We opted for a roast beef, roast chicken and roast beef ciabatta with a delicious lemon bread and butter pudding and custard for afters. They are currently doing a trimmed down menu and were quite happy to make a cheese platter for husband even though this is not currently offered. Staff a very friendly and wearing face shields. Recommend getting there early as the car park is quite small but there is high street parking.

I thought this sort of pub was a thing of the past - uninspiring and basic in every way. A luke warm welcome, the sort of menu you search for something slightly inspiring to order, fail, look again, fail, then I resorted to the kids menu of fish fingers knowing that couldn't go wrong. Call me old fashioned, but when a couple walk to the bar and both order drinks, would you not expect the barman to serve a lady first? Not here. Charmless service, very average food, sticky tables, only filter coffee, no log fire on a cold wet Saturday, generic pub decor, why would you bother? Sorry but I would say give it a miss, and find one of the many charming country pubs in the area of which there are many.

We booked one night, to break up a long trip to Cornwall. We asked for a ground floor room due to our mobility problems, we got room 10. It was a good size, clean and well maintained, the shower was particularly good. We ate in the restaurant at night and the food was of good quality, tasty and a good price. There was a good selection of beers, again at a reasonable price. Breakfast, was served in the restaurant area and there was a good selection for most palates. The staff were very welcoming, polite and helpful during our stay. We were disappointed that we could not stay there on our return journey as it was fully booked!

We were staying nearby and looking for somewhere for our wedding anniversary when the Jolly Huntsman came up on here. We booked a table and my details were taken as per the Covid rules. We were given a warm welcome by the barman, served our drinks, given a menu and directed to our table. I think the menu was probably a little reduced due to current situation but there was still plenty to choose from. The food was served in a reasonable time and was very good, the portions weren’t overwhelming like some of the chain pubs. As an aside I recently discovered my great-great-grandfather lived in the village so this was probably his local in the 1840’s!

Warm welcome by Helen and Simon on arrival and bedroom was clean, warm and very comfortable, not lacking any charm for an old building. The evening meal was absolutely superb, attentive waiters giving prompt delivery of hot meals and all were courteous. Overall the evening and stay was just fab. The Irish band also did not fail to disappoint in entertaining. If you are planning on visiting the area or close by, I would thoroughly recommend staying here. I would stay and dine there again without hesitation!!

Highly recommend staying here. We stayed for one night, room was lovely, all covid precautions taken, staff helpful and very friendly. The pub was lovely, cosy and the food was delicious. We had the stilton sauce with the steak and was simply the best sauce we have ever tasted! Next time we would order a few jugs as was the perfect dip for anything especially the chips. The chef was so lovely and friendly and even told us his secret receipt - I can't praise this yummy sauce enough! The breakfast was included and again was lovely which set us up for our journey home. Thank you

Thanks so much for your kind comments - great to hear that you enjoyed all aspects of your stay with us. Indeed, the Stilton Sauce is a big hit with everyone here and very popular, not so good for the waistline though! Hoping it won't be long before you can visit us again and thank you for taking the time to post your review.

I've had the pleasure of staying at the Jolly Huntsman as it was close to my customers site. From the moment you walk in you are warmly welcomed by a member of the team. The staff are attentive but not in your face, the food is always of a high standard with a good selection and weekly specials. The rooms are clean and dry and the beds are comfy enough for a good night’s sleep. I’ll be booking again when I’m next in the area.

We are in the area and wanted somewhere to eat for our evening meal. Turned to trip advisor where this place is #1. We booked a table And arrived on time. It’s not what I expected…. It’s a very traditional 90’s pub. Very dark as it is an old building with not a lot of lighting inside with the most charming furniture. I love the rustic tables and can imagine its charming in the winter with the fire roaring. Fortunately it was early and fairly quiet. The tables are very close together maybe 2-3 inches apart where we were sat. However 98% of the tables had reserved signs on them. We were welcomed by a delightful and knowledgeable young man. We had the warmest of welcomes. The cider/beer was fresh and great tasting however the glasses were aged and tarnished giving them a dirty appearance. No biggy. The food… wow! Great menu. We had a kids meal, mixed grill & duck. The duck was beautiful. Cooked very well. The red cabbage was delicious also. The duck was served with roast potatoes which i found be possibly left over roast potatoes which had been deep fried. The fryer fat had made them a little greasy and tainted with other fried food flavours. The mixed grill was the best my partner has had in years. Dessert was also delicious! We would certainly call in again when in the area. Well done to the staff and chef :)

Thank you for your compliments and for coming to see us. The glasswasher problem has now been sorted by a water softener service which was long awaited due to an apparent lack of engineers! So glad that you enjoyed your visit and hope to welcome you again soon.

When staying in a hotel locally we decided to book a table here for an evening meal, instead of eating in the hotel restaurant, and what a good decision that was. A very good food menu different from your usual pub grub and we both went for the Pork and black pudding roulade and excellent they were. This is a Free House also known for good ales and although there were only two real ales on in these strange Covid restriction times both the Butcombe Original and Otter Bitter were in good condition. A warm welcome and good service levels from the young restaurant section staff, this is clearly a well run village pub and long may it continue

We happened upon this pub today on our return home from the Cotswold Water Park where our usual lunch stops weren't available due to roadworks and diversions. We were delighted by our new discovery....on entering we were met with a traditional village pub ambience and expected good, local pub food but were served with first class, beautifully presented and perfectly cooked home made dishes. We also received excellent service, especially from the chef and delightful young man who assisted him serving at table. To say we were pleasantly suprised is an understatement. The Sea Bass fillets were superb and my husband said the Salted Caramel Cheesecake was the best he had had in a VERY long time - which I can assure you is high praise indeed. We very much look forward to our next visit... They are also very dog friendly and we loved meeting Mouse, the house whippet.

Staying at the motorway services hotel nearby we asked reception if there was a decent real pub nearby. The member of staff gave excellent instructions of how to get from the westbound Chippenham Delaware site to the venue which only took about 3 or 4 minutes drive south down tiny empty roads. The pub turned out to be a hotel too but we only used the restaurant facility. The pub was warm friendly and atmospheric with a log fire burning. The smell of food was delightful my wife and I both ordered pan fried bass. The meal was cooked to perfection. Every mouthful was a delight, the homemade sauce and veg used were amazing. We didn’t talk much for about fifteen minutes. I tasted the two camra style real ales, they were devine. The red wine was approved by my tasting partner. What a gem this place is to be found just tucked away from the from the beaten track that is the M4.

On the way back to Devon after visits to York, Lincoln, Norfolk, and Buckinghamshire, we were looking for a suitable B&B close to the M4, and found this pub with accommodation in our search. It's just a few miles off the motorway, in a small village between Chippenham and Malmesbury. We found it easily; the welcome was warm, and we soon were settling into our room, which was accessed around the back of the pub in what appeared to be a converted former ancillary building. The room was on the smallish side - but with perfectly adequate facilities, and we relaxed after our journey, watching "Pointless". After a while, we decided to eat in the pub, rather than driving elsewhere. There was a range of options - in my case accompanied by a local pint - and both meals were satisfying and enjoyable. The evening concluded with a little more TV watching back in the room, before a good night's sleep. The following morning we had an excellent breakfast; after enquiring about the bacon, we were informed that it came from a nearby farm shop and was also stocked by the village shop just a few metres down the street. A pack was bought to take home, as well as some delicious gooseberry jam!
