Food was great, service was prompt and with a smile. Staff unfazed when 15 people wanted to rearrange the tables and chairs to accommodate them.

I ate at this friendly tavern as part of a group of 9 people. We had a reservation and were given a nice table in a cosy part of the room. The man behind the bar was welcoming and affable. The food was good value and tasty. Overall good service in a remote location on the W coast of NZ.

They really don't try here. Don't eat here unless there is no other option. Perhaps the worst bangers and mash I've ever eaten. It seems the best option in Punakaiki is to bring your own food. I would only get a drink here, the atmosphere is OK, but the food!

I ate here one night in November with my partner. First impressions were great, warm and cosy. Friendly service. Selection of books to read on a rainy day. Where this place lets itself down is the food. My partner and I both ordered steaks (in the range of NZ$36 - NZ$39). I ordered rare, and him medium-rare. We found that... More

We had fun here doing just that. I think they have darts too! There were also a bunch of tantalizing ukuleles and banjoleles with broken strings on the wall, but it turns out that string replacement is many kms away. Come armed with Uke strings a maybe be a hero? Cheap fried veggie spring rolls too!

Recommended by our landlady near by. Would have been ok if we had been desperately hungry but.... I fail to understand why, even taking into account that this is a fairly remote part of new Zealand, that the fish in fish and chips would be triangular slabs of heavy undercooked batter with a thin layer of stuff ( fish? )... We grabbed our dinner at the Punakaiki Tavern - beer, salad and the fish burger. The fish burger was decent but the salad wasnt great. The lodge had a friendly vibe to it. Service wasnt as friendly as i`d expected - it was 9.30pm but the owners seemed in a hurry to shut for the night. Nevertheless, it has a... More

Great place with serious big portions. Steak was cooked to perfection. Nice ppl running the bar too. Well kept cosy place. The best in this town. If you are hungry after a day long drive this is definitely the right place for you.

We freedom camped across the road and thought we'd take the opportunity of an evening in the pub with no driving required. The pub is one big room mostly given over to chunky tables and chairs to eat at, although you can sit at the bar. The front-of-house staff are friendly. There's an OK range of beer, with Mac's Pale... More

We ate here several times as our resort down the road didn't offer lunches. Lunches were good and reasonably priced. Beer excellent. Friendly service. It was pretty cold and wet and the fireplace made us feel very comfortable. A favorite of locals. Very near an excellent river track for hikes from one to 4 hours into the rain forest. Also... More
