The signpost for this old pub was the first we saw after coming off a traffic jammed M5 on our way to the Devon/Cornwall border so it was a handy pit stop. We were served by a pleasant young barman but unfortunately alot of the menu dishes were unavailable and although the food we had was quite good it was expensive. The pub itself has alot of old world charm although not alot of atmosphere and I would consider it handy rather than somewhere to rave about.

Wednesday was our first visit to a pub since lockdown and we had a lovely meal. The spacious and airy interior of the restaurant was opened up to allow greater space between customers and drinks were ordered and brought to the table. With a new one way system in place and continued welcome to tastecard customers this pub continues to offer excellent value for money and choice of menu. Most importantly, it felt normal and that was a wonderful feeling after such a long absence. The Kings is the heart of the village and has ample space within and in the beer garden to make a very happy and COVID safe evening. Highly recommended.

Having booked in advance, my sister-in-law and I came here for lunch. On Thursdays this is a carvery. We were greeted by the landlord, who took our drinks order and showed us to our table, whilst telling us that we could go to the serving area as soon as we liked. Cooked meats available were pork and gammon, and the vegetables were roast potatoes, parsnips, cauliflower cheese, green and red cabbage, carrots and peas, together with a very tasty gravy and apple sauce. This made a very satisfying meal in pleasant surroundings, at a very reasonable price.

We booked as a family of 6 to eat at this pub. We'd all looked and chosen ahead of time from the menu online and were very much looking forward to it. When we arrived we were shown to our table. On the table was a reserved sign with 18.00 - 19.45 and the waitress said we need the table back by then and! We were never told when booking we had a time limit to eat. We decided we'd better just order a main disband! We were given a print out menu. None of us could find our meals? We asked the waitress why and she said it was a limited menu and the moment. That would of been understandable if I knew in advance!! No mention on the website of a limited menu. The vegetarian option was a chilli (it was the hotest day of the year) so, that was out or, a tart with blue cheese which is a love it or hate it cheese and i hate it or veggie burger. I went with the burger which didn't even come with a side salad or coleslaw just a handful of chips. Very basic and disappointing. Another member ordered fish cakes and once she got to the middle they were barely luke warm (she did mention this to the waitress) overall the food was a let down and expensive even with the 50% off. I'll never visit this pub again. Absolutely awful. I asked the waitress if they were busy at the moment and she said they normally do around 30 bookings but, at the moment it's 65/70 this is clearly why the food is so poor at the moment and they are giving you time limits to eat!

Such a shame you chose to post this on TripAdvisor before giving me the opportunity to respond! Due to a worldwide pandemic we have reduced our menu but still offer a extremely wide choice of dishes to include various veggie/vegan options - I don't think we can be held to blame if you do not like what we offer, after all this is your decision. I am sorry that the online menu does not reflect the ever changing in house menu, I will look into how this can be updated. I am sorry that your time slot of nearly two hours you did not feel was enough time to enjoy your meal; we have found that this has been more than enough time for customers to enjoy their meals. Had you brought this matter to our attention at the time then we would have been only too happy to accommodate you for longer and indeed if you wanted a specific dish then the chef would have been able to help. We do have pasta dishes, salads and many other dishes that chefs could have adapted to suit your needs. Yes we have been very busy with the Eat Out to Help Out campaign but we are always busy and yours is the only negative feedback I have had, please check the other reviews on TripAdvisor for more of an accurate reflection of what we offer. Please in future before leaving damaging inaccurate reviews on public sites, give the establishment the chance to respond and you will find that they will only be too happy to do so. I would love for the chance to meet in person and discuss this matter. Please feel free to contact me.

Went to the Kings Arms a couple of years ago on a Monday quite early in the evening and was very disappointed that they had run out of several items on the menu so didn’t rate it at all. Decided about a month ago to give it another because someone had said there were new owners. We had a pleasant evening and a nice meal. We decided to go back on Saturday and was very disappointed in our food. The starters of prawn cocktail and pate was very overpriced for what we actually got. My brother said he didn’t want peas with his meal and could he have mushrooms instead but the meal came with peas and no mushrooms. The waitress asked if he was allergic to them, if not just to take them off. She then came back with a few mushrooms in a dish. I ordered the beef burger which was incredibly over cooked and very crispy. Overall the presentation of our meals was very poor. We will not be going back there again. We found it quite cold in there and other people around us commented it wasn’t very warm.

Stopped here early August 2020 for lunch and to break a trip to Cornwall from Lancashire - have to say not impressed. Staff were disinterested, all the tables inside were sticky (despite obvioulsy being very clean, I can only assume that the cleaning fluid they're using was the culprit, perhaps it's reacting with the varnish on the wooden table tops?), outdoors was poorly presented and untidy, and who the heck has Happy Hardcore pumping out of the speakers in a pub at lunchtime? Kids didn't want anything to eat so ordered a £15 sharing platter for myself and my partner - barely enough food for a single main course in some pubs, although I will concede that it was good. Only one bottled beer available though, I only wanted something like a Budweiser or Peroni, but no such luck, only Exeter Avocet available. It would have been incredibly easy to walk out of this place without paying as by the time we had finished the staff were nowhere to be seen, I had to stick my head in the kitchen door to find someone as they were too busy gassing. It was only becasue I had booked in advance and theyhad my details that stopped me from walking. Very disappointing, I make this trip regularly but won't be visiting again - it's easy to see why I struggled to book at some other hostelries in the same area.

Many thanks for your review it's only with such frank feedback we can ensure that our standards are high and improving at all times - such a shame that there are so many false allegations in your review. Our outside area is beautiful with stunning hanging baskets, lawned gardens with lots of bench seating and shady areas; there's even a children's play area. We do not have loud house music playing. Our sharing platters are extremely popular, excellent value for money and portions perfect for a normal appetite. We have bottled Bud. Due to Covid and current business levels, staffing reflects this; if you're going to be dishonest and intend to steal from hardworking businesses please don't, we need all the help we can get. I'm pleased you won't be visiting again not only is your review inaccurate but your intentions to steal from our business is not welcome.

We were really looking forward to our visit here after reading previous reviews. I had found the pub on the internet and was a perfect stop off point to break up a long journey. On arrival, the staff were friendly and showed us straight to the table. The decor was dated and in need of freshening up. Two of our party decided on the carvery and two chose from the main menu. The carvery was a let down with really thin gravy, dry, hard Yorkshire puddings and lukewarm vegetables. One of the party had the Devon pie, which was described as an open top cheesy pie with lots of vegetables. What arrived was a burnt looking closed pie with a handful of green beans and some hard New potatoes. No sauce or gravy which made the whole thing dry. The biggest let down was the desserts. These were all charged at £5.50. The chocolate brownie arrived with the smallest scoop of “luxury ice cream “ you could imagine. The brownie was in fact a very small piece of chocolate cake which was very dry. Another of the party had the trio of luxury ice cream. I have sampled a lot of ice cream over the years and this was nowhere near luxury. It tasted cheap and nasty and again very small portions for the price. A very disappointing visit especially as it wasn’t the cheapest place to eat.

Such a Shame we expected more from this place Booked via phone and wasn't actually told the restaurant area was booked and we'd be eating in the pub. A lukewarm welcome shared with the luke warm totally bland overpriced food. Very much Freezer to Fryer fayre in the kitchen, no love or attention to the food here whatsoever. I cannot see a reason to return sadly. I understand pubs are trying to recoup the losses during lockdown but not at the expense of losing future business. £13.95 for 5 pieces of scampi half a piece of fish, chips and what looked suspiciously like an "I've been to Iceland" Fishcake topped off with the most expensive small slice of banoffee cake I've ever paid for! (£5.95) again it looked like a iceland cake defrosted. Sorry........... I'm saying how I saw it I will always give credit where it's due but we work hard for our money and like to feel it's been well spent this wasn't one of those occasions...

Thanks for your annual posting, shame we had to get the brunt of your regular dissatisfaction. It always amazes me how one person can be so negative amongst so many other positive people/reviews. Our prices have not increased since lockdown, nor indeed before, unlike many other businesses, indeed maybe Iceland too. The dishes that your choose always recieve such positive feedback and 100% satisfaction, I'm sorry that this was not the case for you. In future in there's a specific case of dissatisfaction with your food or indeed the spot where your table is, please tell the hosts who would only be to happy to help as opposed to plastering in all over social media - give businesses the chance to help.

We enter entered through a one way system, with signage describing covid measures apply. We requested a table in the garden and were given menus and told to return to the bar to order….this is against all current covid guidelines…table service is required, when alcohol is available for sale. We did as we asked and ordered & paid for our food and drinks at the bar, bringing our drinks back from the bar. Our food came promptly and the steak baguettes were awesome. The chips aren’t fully cooked and I believe the fryer oil may need changing. The onion rings were disappointingly the puréed onion ones not fresh made. But to end on a positive the bread for baguettes was beautifully hot and nicely crispy. The steak was seasoned fabulously and really tender, so great job there, thanks

Booked a table for 3 of us for Sunday lunch & to watch England v Ireland after. Full menu choice available including the carvery which we all opted for, a choice of gammon, pork or beef so we all asked for a mix which was no problem, a great selection of fresh vegetables to help yourself to, as much as or little of whatever you wanted including Yorkshire puddings, stuffing & a lovely substantial gravy. Very friendly & attentive service from everyone. We were offered desserts but were all too full at the time so we were told we could have them at anytime as food is served all day & were welcome to eat them while watching the rugby in the public bar, which we did about 2 hours later. A thoroughly enjoyable & relaxing afternoon, just what we needed. Thanks to Tom & the team.

We visited this restaurant for our first meal out after lockdown, very relaxed atmosphere with very friendly attentive staff. We had the “two steaks and a bottle of wine for £20 offer”. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the wine was lovely, as was the Jail Ale. Tom was an excellent host who clearly wanted his customers to go home happy with their experience. Will definitely be going back soon.

Second time here in two weeks for Sunday carvery. Best in the area and friendly staff. Nice and warm with heat provided by a log burner. Nice to find roast beef properly cooked (not everyone likes it rare) and a good selection of vegetables, well presented. I had a gorgeous apple crumble which came with a dollop of clotted cream and a jug of custard. Locally made Devon cider on tap. Sensible prices, can’t fault it and ticks all the boxes for us. Planning a third visit in two weeks!

Driving from Hampshire to Cornwall, saw a sign for the Kings arms on the a30 and decided to stop. As it was after 2pm (Friday) we checked the signs to make sure food was still being served (sign says food served all day Fri, Sat, Sunday (see photo) order drinks and ask for a food menu to be told the kitchen closes at 2:30 (at this point it’s 2:33 and we’d been in the pub 5 mins) older gentleman behind the bar says kitchen closes at 2:30, we say that’s not what the sign says… he says no it definitely does! We pay for the drinks (that we now feel we’ve been duped into buying by inaccurate signage). Older gentleman checks sign on door and agrees what it says but can’t do anything except apologise and says he’ll tell the owners. (Also tells us where we could get food but more out of our way) Owners: you might think tourists are gullible, but please ensure signs are up to date. I’d have to disagree with the one on the wall of your pub saying your the best pub in Devon.

Many thanks for pointing out our error with regards to opening hours and food service times, the wrong sign was put up following recent window cleaning, these hours were pre covid and we are most sorry for this error. I was most pleased that we were able to point you in the right direction of other places that could offer you food, of which were less than a minute away from your route, but this I understand was to far for you! We do not wish to dupe anyone into parting with monies and we're most sorry you feel this was - please can you contact the pub and we will refund you in full. May I suggest to you that before leaving such negative reviews of any business you actually experience what the business has to offer in full before leaving such negative defamatory reviews.

Now that the pubs have been allowed to open and serve food again after lockdown, we looked forward to nice meal with our son and daughter-in-law. As in the past, the Kings Arms didn't disappoint at all. Fantastic menu choice, including the traditional Sunday roast, and all at extremely reasonable prices. We were seated immediately on arrival and the drinks order was taken. These were quickly served and our food order was given. It seemed like a very short wait before our meals were ready and I have to say that all four of us were impressed with the quantity and value. The meals were excellent and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

I spend quite sometime looking for a fathers day box that is filled with good quality foods, I came across The Kings Arms Tedburn St Mary, I messaged the owner who from start to finish provided a first class service. Extremely fast reply when I enquired about what was included, so happy to know they use fresh and local produce, and at a very good price with free delivery at a time that was convenient for me. Upon delivery I was greeted with a really friendly guy, very polite and helpful. I will now most certainly use this service again , and even look into ordering fresh fruit and veg from them and once restaurants are open again be lovely to try a meal there too. Keep up the great work 😃
