My husband and I took this cooking class based on recommendations from the Rick Steve’s book. The class was great and Moreno, the owner and chef was wonderful! It was my favorite experience in Varenna. And I just made 200 tortellini and ravioli with his...recipe. Outstanding! Highly recommended!More

We always go to IL Caminetto whenever we're in Varenna because of the excellent food and hospitality. We've also attended their cooking class, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We highly recommend a visit here.

We took Chef Moreno’s cooking class. It was equal parts Italian cooking with life lessons / beautiful conversation. The class is more of a demo, with Moreno doing all the “hands on” parts save for us shaping the tortellini. We thoroughly enjoyed learning from him,...and the day includes a generous charcuterie, latte, and full lunch. Plan to make this your entire day! We were there from 10-3 and would have stayed longer if we didn’t have another tour booked. Moreno and Rosella were so kind. Favorite quotes: “Food is love— enjoy it.” “You can feed the belly and not be happy. You feed the soul, you can be happy.” 10/10 recommend!More

Located high in the mountain above Varenna, this small restaurant serves up an excellent meal by the personable Morello, the chef, and his wife Rossella. The restaurant offers a “3-course menu” but it is really a lot of food: The appetizer included 3 different kinds...of homemade pate and Italian hams and vegetables in olive oil. Then we had their risotto with mushrooms – absolutely the best risotto ever and the best dish of the meal After that came tasty pasta. My wife had the Lake Como fish filet which she thought was very good. Instead of roasted veal, I had the beef tenderloin, which was not as tender as I would have preferred, but with tasty sauce. All the portions were large – so much so we declined dessert. The service was attentive and friendly. Morello appears from time to time to make sure everyone is satisfied. Getting to the restaurant is not a problem as Rossella will pick you up at the Varenna ferry point, take you to the restaurant, and deliver you back to your hotel. (“My name is Rossella up and down.”) A wonderful dining experience.More

Had great expectations for our evening, given the previous reviews, and certainly wasn’t disappointed. Rosella collected us, as promised, from our hotel in Varenna and took us up the very windy route to the restaurant, where we were greeted by Moreno, our very charming chef....He was happy to chat us through the menu, whether it was the tasting menu or the a la carte. Other guests arrived, in all about 12 of us eating in a lovely setting with peaceful background music. We opted for a la carte and tasted pate, pancetta in oregano, porcini and apple risotto, steak cooked on a hot stone and little lamb chops, apple strudel cake and a carafe of red wine .. all for €88 … great value and a lovely evening …thank you both 😊More

A real highlight of our holiday. Rossella kindly picked us up from Varenna and drove us up to the restaurant (pointing out the beautiful views of the lake along the way), and we were greeted by Moreno. The restaurant is wonderfully traditional and the food...was exceptional. I am coeliac and require gluten free food - both Moreno and Rossella went out of their way and I was able to eat almost anything on the menu! The risotto was one of the best I’ve ever eaten. Thank you so much!More

We had the pleasure of having dinner last week at this wonderful place! Food and service were outstanding. we had the tasting menu and it was way more than a taste! Rosella was so kind to let us take home our leftovers. We "recreated" most...of our dinner the next day. what fun. Chef Moreno and his wife Rosella were such wonderful hosts. So much that 3 of my family members took his cooking class a few days later and loved it!More

After doing an organized tour of other countries, we were looking for a real Italian meal - This did not disappoint. Rosella picked us up in Varenna and drove us to the restaurant. We had the fixed menu. It was served a a leisurely pace...so we could enjoy every bite. The carafes of wine were delicious and the meal was topped off with shots of limoncello. It was a wonderful dinner. We were raised in the Italian tradition of family, lots of courses, wine and great food at a relaxing pace. This was everything we hoped for.More

Really enjoyed our evening here. The owners are so friendly and the lift to and from the restaurant was an added bonus. We had the set menu and it was all delicious, the porcini risotto was amazing. There was too much food to fit in...deserts but the complimentary limoncello was a nice end to a lovely evening. The food and wine was really reasonable too. Highly recommend this place but booking in advance is essential.More

Four of us took this incredible cooking class with Moreno, greeted with Cappuccino and cookies by his wife, Rossella (who then I believe left and then shopped for ingredients!). Moreno picks you up from the ferry in Varenna, and takes you up the beautiful winding...road to his sweet restaurant. One of the highlights of our multiple week trip to Italy! Moreno is genuine, charming and hilarious, and his cooking class is so instructive-his love of food, cooking, teaching and his genuine warmth make the experience truly memorable. He provides you with the recipes, and you eat the delicious food for lunch--this is just a charming, wonderful way to spend a day on your trip to Italy. As a bonus, Moreno suggested some great restaurants in other parts of Lake Como that we visited. Perfecto!More

Wonderful dining experience from a sweet couple, dedicated to making their guests happy. We started the evening by meeting Rosella in town and she drove us and another couple up to their restaurant. We chose the tasting menu, with a choice of 2 entrées. We...chose one of each. My fish was excellent, as was my husband’s veal. Each course was perfectly prepared. We loved the risotto and homemade pasta especially. The carafes of white and red wine were perfect accompaniments to our various courses. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the lovely young couple from the UK, at the next table. After dinner, Rosella returned us to our hotel. It was a great experience, and perfect ending to our stay in VarennaMore

This entire meal and experience was special. Do not be turned off by the fact that this is a few miles/Kms outside of Varenna… the owners will pick you up in Varenna, drive you up to the restaurant in the hills above Perledo, and drive...you back after dinner. Moreno and Rossella will treat you to a spectacular meal that Moreno prepares. I strongly recommend the tasting menu, and that you come hungry. If you don’t have quite that appetite, the pate appetizer and risotto were unforgettable. We are already excited to plan our return trip to il Caminetto when we return to Lake Como.More

Pick up at the port was very convenient. The drive to the restaurant is a very narrow road with many hard to navigate switchbacks. Being from the city, I am not used to driving on roads such as these and was thankful for the free...pick-up service. After our meal, we were driven back to our hotel, not just the port. A liter of wine was 9.90. For those not in the know, a bottle of wine is 750 ml, and a liter is 1000 ml. I have never seen even a bottle of wine in the US for anywhere near that price in a restaurant. For our appetizer we got Missoltino, sun dried lake fish which is said to be the specialty of the area. Not my cup of tea, but we wanted to try it. Very salty and fishy flavored. Next was pasta with a meat sauce. Very tasty. The mixed grill had steak, lamb, chicken and veal all served on a little sword. Presentation and taste were very good. We also had the steak that was very tender and roasted potatoes that were excellent. 3 chocolate cake for dessert - moist and flavorful. The staff was very friendly and we would definitely go back again if we had the chance.More

Moreno is a gifted cook. Everything that he prepares has a unique quality and taste. The materials are all natural and collected from their right origin. One thing that I advice not to miss is the Lardo - even though it isn't cholesterol free :-)...All meet dishes are excellent, and the pastas are perfect. The view near the restaurant is one of the most beautiful on earth - the lake and the mountains - perfect.More
