Dodgin's Yard stands out for its quirky, cozy ambiance with a nautical twist that many patrons enjoy, although a few find the atmosphere less inviting due to the occasional chilly draft from an open door. The food receives mixed reviews; while some guests celebrate the delectable seafood, others find the portions lacking in size and not always served at the ideal temperature. As for the service, opinions vary from commendations of friendliness and attentiveness to frustrations over slow and inconsistent experiences. The restaurant's value is a point of contention, with some applauding the reasonable prices and others pointing out smaller portions and unexpected charges.

Sunday lunch, nice food, cooked well, good flavours, friendly staff. Thought the food was a little expensive, but did enjoy it, so can't complain, however, disappointed that a pint of lager shandy was same same price as a pint of lager (£4.50) therefore charging £2.25 for half a pint of lemonade. Left us with a sour taste in our mouths ( metaphorically speaking)

Originally came to eat at The Tap House, next door but they weren't serving food. Decided to try their place next door for the first time. Staff were very friendly and took our order for food and drink very quickly. We waited a fair while for our food even though there weren't many people in the restaurant.. I was a bit disappointed when my meal of Hake goujons and chips arrived, there were only 3 goujons on the plate and a basket of chips. Although they were nice I thought the price of £11.95 was a wee bit expensive. I think we will stick with next door

We booked to go for Sunday lunch and asked for two pints of soft drink. We were told they only did one size so we got two small glasses knowing we would have to order another. Which we did shortly afterwards. The lunch was lovely, the veg was really good and a nice touch with the extra gravy without asking! When we were eating another table received two pints...one of lemonade and another of lemonade and orange. So clearly they do sell large soft drinks, just not to us apparently! We always tip but didn’t this time.

I appreciate some things have changed post covid but the issues on our visit today were not related to this. The greeting was average verging on rude and from there on it was poor the delays to be served were long (we had pre booked). We then Waited 45 mins for a breakfast to arrive and when it did the quality was severely below par hard boiled poached eggs and charcoal bacon. There was no check back at any point no apology for delay in service and at £22.50 for a very poor standard visit sadly I see no reason to return.

After having this restaurant recommended and seeing so many good reviews we were really looking forward to late lunch at this establishment. We booked a table in advance and arrived promptly. The lady who met us at the door pointed to were we were to be seated and after that nothing! !!!!!We waited for 25 mins for someone to take our order or even acknowledge our existence,it was if we were totally invisible! A family who arrived later than us were immediately attended to and their orders taken. I tried to catch the waitresses eye on numerous occasions but she either looked straight through us or turned her back on us. The family who had already been served were again approached by the waitress and asked if they had ordered to which they replayed that they had at this point I thought the lady serving would recognise the fact that she had still not taken our order but alas I was wrong. I have never walked out of a restaurant before but at this point it became clear that we had very little chance of being served. We then regrettably left. I can honestly say that they didn't even notice that we had gone. It is very rarely that my husband and I get a chance to go out because se of personal circumstances so you can imagine how disappointed we were. Fortunately we managed to book into another restaurant where the service was excellent.I have heard that Dogins Yard is under new management. Whether that is something to do with the very poor service I cannot say what I will say is, that I will not be returning. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area were they would gladly accept our custom .

I went here with my boyfriend on August 8th for my birthday breakfast. It was a sunny Saturday so busy inside and out, however we'd booked and were seated without so much as a "hello". Unfortunately the service didn't improve from here... Two (possibly new?) waitresses were visibly struggling to deal with the full capacity outdoor area. I heard a number of diners inside questioning when their drinks/meals would arrive, so it wasn't just us experiencing the dreadful service. Our breakfasts took over 45 minutes to arrive and unfortunately the food was no better than the dire service. Rock hard poached eggs (these were eventually replaced for softer poached eggs which tasted of vinegar). My boyfriend's bacon was akin to charred boot leather and butter for the toast was forgotten. At no point were we asked how the meal was, in fact I'm not even sure I saw either of the two waitresses smile at any point. The table next to us returned their entire meals as they were cold, so again, it wasn't just us having a bad time.... A pretty dire experience all told, especially for a birthday meal. Plenty of other cafes and restaurants in the area for us to try.

We arrived at the front of Dodgin's at around 1.10pm today, on a slightly chaotic day down at the Fish Quay, but Dodgin's Yard had been highly recommended in the past few days by Geordie Instagram influencers. We waited some time for someone to take our order. When they did arrive we ordered the monkfish and chips main meal, the calamari special for the day (they were out of mussels), and a side of sweet potato fries. Our food took 50 minutes to arrive, which was disappointing as the indoor and outdoor areas weren't really busy, no queuing customers, and wait staff on their phones. Before our food eventually arrived, I had asked the manager where our food was and any estimates about when it might get there, seeing as we'd waited for 45 minutes by then, and she stated 'just 3-4minutes'. Most of the food did arrive after our 50 minute wait, except for the order of sweet potato fries. As there was no check back by staff about the missing food, I had to go up to the bar to enquire about the missing part of the order. The wait staff I asked went to find out and returned saying that sweet potato fries weren't on the order, but that I could order them now although this would mean that the fries would be 'at the back of the queue for orders' - this just wasn't good enough, so we cancelled this part of the order, having already waited nearly an hour for a small lunch. The calamari special was a starter portion size at best and certainly not worth the £8 for small, lacklustre pieces of squid (not sure how this constitutes a meal?), the monkfish tasted ok but was also a small portion for the price. We asked to pay so we could leave asap and made our feelings clear about the quality of service. The response from management was "I've only got one chef today". Our experience at Dodgin's today was underwhelming, especially as we were keen to go there following recent collaboration with local food bloggers on Instagram. We came away feeling a bit deceived by the Instagram impression of Dodgin's, and we definitely won't be going back.

Two stars rather than 1 because the staff were friendly and the ambience inside this small restaurant was good. Food was dreadful. The ingredients may well have been fresh off their own trawler but any quality was destroyed by the chef. Fish and Chips were both so badly over fried that any flavour was lost. Prawns pan fried with Chile garlic etc. Was served in a bowl swimming in oil ( so full of oil it covered the prawns) with some sort of flat bread that was crisp. When I first saw the bowl I assumed that the prawns were in a sauce - but, no, just oil. I was mystified. I think it's still a requirement for staff to wear face coverings. None were. Hopefully the fish restaurant a few doors down will be open again soon.

We called in here one afternoon as we often visit North Shields for something to eat. We choose the meal deal that consisted of brisket of beef , jerk chicken onion rings , fries and dips, and a choice of drink either soft or alcohol. Food was really tasty and portion size was reasonable. Excellent price of £22 friendly staff Definitely would return to try other stuff on the menu . 😍🤩

Hash was cold and beef was not warmed or recooked properly. Absolute slop on a plate. Very few in any potatoes in and was just a mess. Not surprised the service didn't ask how the food was when it was evident we ate 2 or 3 scoops of the slop. On the way out I seen the full English which looked great pity I didn't go for that option. If you want to see how bad it was have a walk past the low lights and it will be on the floor there.

Marvellous little place on North Shields Fish Quay main drag. Eight of us went for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. They all had cod & chips @£11.95 and were all well pleased with quality and quantity. I chose brisket of beef in barbecue sauce and real chips @13.95 and it was totally delicious. The staff were extremely friendly and efficient. Thoroughly recommend this place, well worth a visit.

When we moved to North Shields in 1982, the fish quay was still busy but in slow decline. Large quantities of whitefish were hard to find and hard to sell. Fast forward to 2020 and the quay is now the ‘new place to be’ and retains a small but working fleet. Even better, one of the restaurants on the quayside now boasts its own trawler and has regular social media updates telling customers what’s good and what’s on the way back into port for dinner ! It’s irresistible and we just had to go. Dodgin’s Yard is a fairly small, informal restaurant . It has indoor and outdoor seating (for the summer) and relies heavily on fresh fish and meats. On a sunny afternoon, we ordered some fish tacos just to check the place out. The salad and sides were ok but fairly standard. The fish though - was superb My wife had hardly finished hers before she was planning a return visit. Service was very friendly - although a little slow with all the COVID stuff but it wasn’t an issue in the sunshine . Good value, great food - and at the end of the quay where you can see the river too. We’ll be back.

Last night we visited for the second time and were equally as impressed as the first time. This place is my absolute favourite. The food is incredible. The lemon, garlic & chilli prawns were to die for! I hope to see the menu expand over coming months, both times I’ve visited, I’ve heard other people ask for the starter menu. Unfortunately, at this time, they don’t have a starter or dessert menu. I’d love to see you guys expand and more options on the menu. My only criticism would be the service, it’s not poor by any stretch, and the guy with the tattoos is lovely and really helpful, however, you must specifically ask what special offers are on as they aren’t forthcoming with that information. When you ask, they aren’t really sure and just kind of blag it.

Heard really good things about this place and after booking a table over the phone and paying a £20 deposit we called in. Now it was 1pm on a Sunday and the place was full, we were given a tiny table right under the serving/bar area. The other diners were literally shoulder to shoulder to me, obviously squeezed as many tables in for maximum covers as opposed to diners comfort and space. It felt claustrophobic, loud and not very relaxing at all. To be honest it is a really small restaurant not portrayed by their 'Instagram' style photographs on their Facebook page. Our food came pretty quickly and it was really disappointing, the beef was just bits of pulled shreds, the pork belly was like rubber you couldn't cut through it and I was on the brink of asking for a steak knife but after a couple of mouthfuls I decided just to leave it, the chicken was actually nice but absolutely tiny. The veg was lukewarm served on a strip of paper on a wooden board, the mash had sweetcorn in it. The gravy was watery and the huge Yorkshire pudding was rock hard and cold. Overall it was one of the worst Sunday lunches I have ever had and one of the dearest. The staff were not much better either, the young girl was polite enough but the bald gentleman behind the bar was just concerned about numbers of diners for the rest of the day clearly not those actually in his restaurant as nobody asked how our food was. Also had to remind the waitress that we had already paid a deposit as it hadn't been deducted off the bill and she seemed surprised by this even though it was probably her who took it over the phone earlier. There are so many better places on the Quayside for food and I'm pleased I tried this place as I can honestly say I won't be back.
