It might be a small cafe but it has a big heart & a big and interesting menu! Covid restrictions meant queuing to order at front entrance table, so need to be dressed accordingly! All 3 of us chose bacon rolls with 2 teas & a coffee . Both food and drinks were very well received on a cold but dry day and the bill came to £12.30. Service was very efficient and the queues were handled quickly. Highly recommended! Will definitely visit when we can eat indoors.

This little cafe on the square in Masham is a little gem. Its coffee and unique blend of traditional and eastern food cooked well is joyful to body and mind. Visited again today after a bike ride and found the staff welcoming, attentive and was asked if I was comfortable with the experience. There is socially distanced seating both in and out which is constantly cleaned, signs up outside for customers to advise of the Covid restrictions and personal contact details required when sitting inside. As someone in the "at risk" category for Covid I had all the information I needed before making the decision to stay. I'm really glad that I did.

We are regular visitors to Masham and more often than not we find ourselves gravitating towards Johnny Baghdad’s when hungry, whatever the time of day. The vegetarian breakfast is usually very good; we were only slightly disappointed once. The lunch specials are invariably excellent - interesting, tasty and very good value. This cafe also has a great ambience - inside and out - and the staff have always been courteous, friendly and efficient. Great coffee and cakes too.

lovely cafe with nice staff and good atmosphere. Had coffe in the morning which was nice and decided to go back for lunch. The morrocan veg dish they served was covered in horrible tastless tomato sauce, the veg dish was bland and had no taste of anything, the only good part was the salad. they should keep to what they know if they can't do decent food

As a Coeliac, it’s very difficult finding a place to eat at times. Especially as I don’t eat red meat either. Popped into Masham for a look around, on our holiday. Had been there before many years back. Lady from a shop in the square, recommended this cafe. When we got there, only had to wait a few minuets. They were very busy and we had to wait for them to disinfect the table and chairs. Had to eat outside under the shade of a lovely tree, such a hardship haha. I asked about Gluten Free options and settled in a toastie instead of a Panini. It had tomato, pesto and buffalo mozzarella, served with a bit of salad. Had to make sure they did not give me any raw onion on the salad, as allergic. The toastie was the best I have ever had. Hubby had a sausage, bacon and egg hot roll, he’s not Coeliac. He had a pot of a Yorkshire tea. He thoroughly enjoyed his lunch. He won’t eat out anywhere, unless he knows I can have something as well. We both had the Eton Mess cake, which was yummy. Best cake I have had since coming off gluten. At one point, we thought I had been glutened. My husband looked over and saw the cake menu by the door and noticed the other cakes were marked as GF, but not the one I had half eaten. I kind of panicked thinking there had been an awful mistake, as the cake seemed too good to me GF. Our fears were extinguished when they said that i could have it and they needed to correct the mistake on the board. Never been so happy. Am writing this review, as so impressed with both the food and service. They went out of their way. Will be returning maybe later in the week before we go home and when we next come up. Very reasonably priced as well. Would highly recommend this lovely little cafe. .

As a local I cannot believe that I have missed submitting a review for Johnny Baghdad’s until now. In sum, it is our ‘local go-to’, and quite simply, we love it! Located in the corner of the square, it is very easy to find. If you drive, lots or parking in and around the square, though obviously less so on market days. It’s also a favourite with cyclists and local runners, not uncommon to find several bikes adding a dash of colour as they are propped up outside (motor cyclists seem to use another café around the market square, which helps to keep to noise down by Johnny Bagdad’s). The only disadvantage with the location is that it is on the shady side of the square, such that the sun barely manages to touch any of the outside seating, even at the height of summer, so it can feel chilly sat outside. Wear warm clothes! Now it’s not a large establishment: two rooms inside brim full of character, several tables outside. It does get busy, and the kitchen is quite small too, though the majority of the clientele seem to be fairly relaxed about this, passing the time with friends or family or simply watching the world to pass by while waiting for their order to arrive. If you are in a rush, perhaps look elsewhere. They do takeaways though, which might hit the middle ground. Johnny Baghdad’s has an eclectic menu: traditional breakfasts; bacon or sausage baps; brioche to die for; shawarmas, wraps and falafels, gorgeous cakes, and a wide variety of drinks including excellent coffee and smoothies. Our fall back is the ever-reliable chicken shawarma, never fails! However, do be aware the board on display outside only shows a small selection of what is available, do ask to see the full menu, there’s much more than first meets the eye. All very reasonably priced, and with great staff! So don’t visit if in a rush, ask to see the full menu, and enjoy what is our favourite place in Masham!

My fiance and I visited for breakfast on a not too busy morning. We sat down and the menu had 4 breakfast options....full English, a veggie full English, jam on toast and something else on toast, so that was quite disappointing. The decor gives a hippy vibe which goes inline with the name of the café. I went for a panini with roasted red peppers, mozzarella and pesto sauce, my fiance went for a sausage batch. Granted the panini was quite large but it was slim and served with a side salad drowning in a vinegarette dressing. I had a glass of water that was served in a glass that was covered in scratches so guessing it's seen better days, the water was lukewarm in temperature and when I asked for ice the waitress brought back ice scraps that had dirt on most. I alerted another waitress to this but she didn't offer to change the ice or get me a fresh glass of water. Definitely won't be going back if we visit Masham again.

This cafe Is a little gem in a beautiful setting-in the corner of Masham square. There is a range a food, but the Moroccan style food in particular is superb (I recommend the chicken shawarma and flatbreads). Staff are friendly and helpful. Covid19 measures are in place, particularly indoors. My only thought is that perhaps the staff could wear visors?

My wife and I called in for lunch with a friend . Although the staff were very friendly and efficient, our food was below par. The paninis were bland, and our friend said that his scone was “just about all right.” The worst, however, was my cheese sandwich : the bread was too thick and more suitable for toasting, the cheese was rubbery and tasteless, and there was some salad in there as well as on the side of the plate. As I said to the waitress, the best part of the offering was the solitary olive. I left half of my sandwich, something I never do. I have never written any review complaining about an establishment, but feel that our experience yesterday was most disappointing and unacceptable, and certainly not worth the price we were charged. If the staff would like to learn how to improve their cheese sandwiches, I suggest they pay a visit to Barker’s cafe in their big store in Northallerton. I am sorry to be sounding so negative, and I do not want to be unpleasant or rude, but one must take the criticism with the plaudits.

Called in on a trip to Masham with our 2 daughters and were looking for an early lunch on a holiday weekend. We were lucky to arrive as an outside table was available so enjoyed watching over the market square during a nice spell in the sun but also were protected well during a shower thanks to the decent parasols. Service was friendly, the menu was plentiful and a decent selection of specials. Drinks arrived quickly and the food arrived soon after. Notably the young waitress noticed my teapot didn’t feel the right weight so took it away for topping up. We had a selection of paninis and salad which were all well enjoyed and used local produce. Overall, a very pleasant lunch experience.

Had a tasty hot breakfast sat outside in the lovely square in Masham. Great service and friendly staff. Damp weather did not spoil the food and the umbrellas over the tables kept us dry. Good quality ingredients used. We will return.

I was recommended to stop here as I was rushing past. All I wanted was a tasty take away sandwich. Ham salad , not difficult eh? £4.65 for two bits of sliced bread with a slice of processed tasteless ham and a limp lettuce leaf. I don’t class a lettuce leaf as a salad. I really hope I just got a bad day because it was tasteless, silly expensive and was obviously made with no care at all. What were they thinking?

This was our second visit to this lovely, quirky cafe in the corner of the market square in Masham. We both had very generous helpings of shawarma with flatbread , houmous and salad. It was absolutely delicious. I honestly think it was one of the tastiest dishes I have ever had. The atmosphere is friendly and cosy and we will definitely be back (hopefully the shawarma will still be on the menu!). Thank you for a great meal.

Had a wonderful breakfast. Greeted by very friendly staff and shown to a table. I wanted scrabble eggs and my husband wanted poached eggs which were not on the menu. The chef had no problem with doing either of them and they were cooked to perfection 👌 would highly recommend to anyone and looking forward to going back in a few weeks.

If we want lunch or light refreshments in Masham we always come to Johnny Baghdad's. As it's often busy others obviously have the same view of the place as us. We like the funky decor and it creates a relaxed atmosphere. The food is pretty good too, particularly the chicken shawarma with its hot sauce and delicious filling and accompaniments. A nice range of cakes are usually on offer but we find these can be a bit hit and miss. Staff are always pleasant and friendly. Certainly a place to recommend.
