Ego at The Bull's Head in Horbury offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, widely noted for its modern decor and occasional live music that elevates the dining experience. While the food garners praise for its presentation and flavor, guests' opinions vary, with some facing disappointment over temperature and cooking issues. Patrons commend the friendly service, yet there are reports of frustrating wait times, including delays in seating and receiving meals. Opinions on value are mixed; some find the pricing fair, though concerns about portion sizes persist.

Let me start with the pub, it is done out beautiful. That’s about as good as my review gets. 10 of us went for my daughters birthday. It wasn’t busy and took ages for the food to arrive, none of it was very warm on both the starter and the mains. Everyone in our group said it was average, with the prices been on the more expensive side. Me and my wife had the tapas share board for £14.95, it was very average wish I hadn’t of bothered. I then had lamb which said it would come pink, which is how I like it, it came well done and was just ok, wasn’t worth the 18.95. My wife had sea bass which said came with chorizo and tomato, it was two pieces of small fish that was cold, she had one tomato in the entire dish. Also not with £18.95. My wife said the crem brûlée’s was good for desert. I wish I could give them an excuse like it was packed so the food might have been rushed but it wasn’t. Also they had a service charge for over 8 people so it cost our group around £40. Seems like they are trying to do fine dining with fine dining prices but can’t deliver on the food. I have been told that the three course Sunday lunch they do is really Good for £20. Don’t think we will risk it though. Overall with drinks it probably cost us £100 for 2 of us. I know a lot better restaurants that I could eat at for half the price. Can’t knock the waitress who served us. She was very warm and welcoming. It really is a shame because it done out lovely.

Eaten many times for many years at ego so we pre booked in as a family to celebrate our daughters special birthday . On arrival the place was packed and it was only 5.30pm . Half of the bar was packed full of dirty glasses still waiting to be washed so did not make a food first impression to our other party members who had never eaten at ego before. When we were shown to our table we were disappointed to see that the table decoration we had brought in earlier in the day had not been placed on the table (it’s the little things that make a birthday a bit more special ) once seated at the table we were given food menus and left in our own for over 15 minutes . No offer to take drinks orders , see a wine list , nothing . Prawn cocktail was 4 tasteless prawns and only what can be described as 4 spots of sauce !!!!!! Rather disappointing and won’t be ordered again . The waiter did explain that they have been so busy since lunch time and it did appear that everyone had booked and arrived together . The group Ego need to take some responsibility for this as all the staff were clearly running around trying to do the best they could in this situation . Rest of food was nice but to be fair it was tarnished by the service and overall experience which we received on what was a special birthday

We booked our first restaurant outing on Monday 3rd August and chose Ego at the Bulls Head. We were a party of 4 Adults and a 2 year old so the table was booked for 5.30pm. We were given a lovely table with good social distancing in place. Same lady serving us as before and the menu was as good as always. We had the 2 course menu which was a choice of stater and main or main and dessert. Service was good and we placed our order pretty quickly just as the restaurant was getting busier so we asked for the children’s meal to come with our starters. Starters arrived but no children’s meal...we finished our starter and still no children’s meal. By this time it was 6.30 and my grandson was hungry, the lady on the next table offered him some fries as he was shouting for his dinner! To be fair, a young man came over and asked if we wanted the child’s meal and expecting our mains to arrive we told him to bring them together. What a big mistake we made. It was almost 7.00pm when they arrived and no kids meal was brought out. He eventually got his at 7.15pm. It was a busy night and the staff did their best but they can only serve what the kitchen has ready. To wait nearly 2 hours for a child’s meal which we asked for with our starters was not a good start but our food did not disappoint and we all enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the child’s meal was disappointing and the pasta sauce was less than appetising. The eat out to help out did make it extremely good value and overall we enjoyed it. I’m sure things will improve as the team start to work together again.

Without doubt the worst restaurant in Horbury.. I’ll try to keep this as short as possible but it will be difficult as there are so many negatives. We went as a group of 4 adults giving it another chance returning after a previous bad experience and subsequent review. The manager offered a £50 voucher to return after apologising and stating our next visit would be better. IT WAS WORSE! I have genuinely never felt so uncomfortable on so many different levels in a restaurant. The atmosphere was one of distaste due to the number of people complaining (including us) about their food being either inedible, incorrect or as I overheard one customer tell the waiter “this is not chicken it’s just fat” Another couple 2 tables down ended up eating at completely separate times as the woman sent her meal back and waited so long for a replacement that her partner had to eat his meal whilst she had nothing. Pretty much everyone was complaining about something. This was very embarrassing and uncomfortable to be around. To top our evening off not only did we wait for over an hour after ordering our food but my meal was not what I’d ordered! This meant that I also had to complain making me feel even more uncomfortable than I already did!! The only positive was our waiter Harry. It was very clear from the time of arriving that poor Harry was having a very bad night and was bearing the brunt of the large volume of complaints about the food and service. He remained polite and as professional as he could under the circumstances. Unfortunately his stress level was obvious and through no fault of his own this showed creating an atmosphere he was desperately trying to avoid. It certainly made me feel very sorry for him. I assume it was due to the chaotic complaints and problems with the food that we waited so long for our meals, but it’s a ridiculous and unacceptable amount of time regardless. I’ve tried this restaurant 4 times now since it opened a few years ago and EVERY time I’ve come away unhappy. It’s not a cheap restaurant and the food and service should be a good standard. It’s not, and to make matters worse it seems that the owners try to cut cost on what matters kitchen staff and the number of waiters required. It’s a big restaurant but cannot cater efficiently for its customers, very disappointing and I certainly will not be going again. I wouldn’t eat there for free after last night!!

As a previous reviewer said the decor is excellent. The afternoon tea was not expensive at £9.99, but the two finger sandwiches were only OK with bread that was dry on one side as if it it had been left out. The scones were straight out of a packet. The small chocolate cake was OK. The tiny slice of tart was not fresh and shop bought. The teapots were placed on the table ages before the cakes etc came. The staff were very friendly. The manager did ask us if everything was alright but it’s difficult to complain when you are out with a group so as not to spoil the occasion. Well I won’t be recommending it and I won’t be going again.

I'd called into to Ego for a quick lunch with my son one day and had a nice plate of calamari to share and a mixed kebab. Thought it was quite expensive for what it was but it was enjoyable, the salad was fresh, tortillas hot and the calamari plentiful. My son really enjoyed and wanted to bring his dad too so we returned as a family visit for the kebab night on Thursday evening. To say it was disappointing was an understatement. We ordered a pint of Ossett Blonde and an Estrella, when the drinks arrived we could see that the beer looked cloudy but thought it might be condensation on the glass. We were wrong, my partner took a sip and looked like he was going to be sick, he passed it to me and I could tell immediately that it was sour. The very pleasant waitress was very apologetic and changed ut for an Estrella. The Estrella was drinkable but rather flat which was disappointing for a premium priced lager. My son's apple juice was fine. Starters arrived and were fine, prawns wer nice and the calamari was OK too but nothing like the calamari I'd had earlier in the week at lunchtime. Portion size was much smaller, it was lukewarm rather than hot and crunchy. The mains arrived - one mixed skewer, one steak (pink) skewer and a chicken milanese. The first think I noticed was that the side salad did not look fresh and were wilted, as though they'd been plated up earlier in the day and left to stand. The tortillas for the skewers were cold and had not been heated so we sent them back. The mixed kebab had less meat than the the kebab I'd shared with my son, there's no way we could have shared this but it was edible. The steak skewer on the other hand was not edible. I really enjoy rare steak but the first chunk of meat was really cold and fleshy. I took a couple of more bits of meat off the skewer to cut into those and they were the same. I called over the waitress and asked her to take it away. She offered an alternative but by that stage I'd had enough and just wanted to leave. The front of house staff seem to be really nice and I feel so sorry that they have to take the flack for staff who can't keep decent beer on the bar nor produce consistent food in the kitchen those people cooking the food should be ashamed of themselves for having the evening waitresses take flack for the absolute rubbish they send out. I was not charges for the returned skewer, the bad pint and the Estrellas were charged at half price. That said, it still rankled being charged almost £60 for a really poor experience.

We go here quite often and it's normally good, however on this occassion the first seating waiter gave us the wrong menu and not the special for the night so we had order 2 glasses of red then a waitress came to take our order and gave us the correct special menu which stated if we ordered off that we could get a bottle of wine which was less the cost than the 2 glasses we had pre orded when I pointed this out it would have been nice to have prior to us already ordering 2 glasses of wine she quickly changed our order and we got a bottle. I normally go for the calamari and steak which is usually good but descided on a change Ham Hock terrine was very salty and for me to say that is rare as I cook with salt and add salt to my food as I love the stuff I couldn't finish. For the main I had the iberian pork which came and was covered in raw chilli which I couldn't eat. My husbands meal was fine and the total cost wasn't expensive for 2 2course meals with abottle of wine coming to £37 on a Friday night. However to say I didn't really eat much apart from the garnish and veg it's a bit of a disapointment. The waitress was lovely though who served our meals very attentive. Another annoyance though as a couple was we sat near to a family with some rather unruly children and from what I can gather a female employee of the place who was having a meal off hours I say that as she was quite loud and moaning about customers she had to deal with not a good to hear this when you are trying to have a date night with your husband. Not saying I won't go there again but might give it a rest and try somewhere new for now. Bit of a shame as we having being going there for quite a while now.

Went for NYE meal. Asked to change table, no problem. Staff really good. Served by Lilly and nothing too much trouble. 2 for 1 cocktails went down a treat and Connor and Barstaff very good even when under pressure. One of our party requested blue steak and it was cooked just right. Musical entertainment good, just a shame it finished before midnight. We usually go for the fixed price menu during the week which is great value for money. Good food, great staff definitely worth a try

We have previously had good experiences at Ego, Horbury, however last evening was more than disappointing. The staff were under immense pressure. Long waiting times...almost 40 minutes between starters and main course. One meal was excellent the other, a lamb tagine was a “child sized “ portion served in a small black bowl with a mountain of pitta and a scattering of bone dry cous cous. Other customers were served the tagine in the correct dish with a full portion. We were brought the dessert menu but no one arrived to take the order so we decided to leave. I did question the cost of the tagine but was told that I had been offered a drink or alternative food to compensate which I had declined. On the whole a very disappointing experience

we visited on a Thursday evening and a Wednesday evening. First visit waited 2 hrs for food. The table next to us received there 3 courses, paid and left whilst we waited for mains of pork belly and cod loin. The pork belly was average. The cod loin overcooked and dry. The staff member acknowledged we had been waiting a while and told us the next round of drinks would be free. We didn't see him again so no free drink. Decided to give them another chance as they were busy. Next visit we were seated right next to the kitchen. My starter of prawn cocktail that cost £7 had 4 king prawns on it and 5 x 5p size dots of rose Marie sauce and salad. My husband had tasteless brocoli and cauliflower soup. We ordered goats cheese pizza and medium rare steak for mains. Pizza had 4 small dots of goats cheese. Half was undercooked, other half burnt. Steak came out well cooked, no sautéed mushrooms and a tablespoon of salad. The worst part of the meal though was listening to the young lad throwing cutlery into a wooden drawer at the side of us and the young girl slagging off a customer. Her exacts words were ' I cant believe she's getting 50 % off her food and she's still complaining about it. A waiter was complaining that they were over booking the tables and the kitchen couldn't keep up with the service. The waiting staff were messing about at the front of the kitchen, right by the side of our table whilst customers were waiting for service. The ladies toilets also need a good clean and decorating. Even with the 50% eat out to help out discount this was an overpriced less than average experience. We have eaten at other restaurants during August and have had excellent service and food. We've eaten at Ego plenty of times and had no issues. Safe to say we will not be visiting again

Very disappointed with our visit this week. We booked for 18.30pm, never got a drink until 19.00pm and food didnt arrive until 20.30pm. I had 2 very hungry children and the waiter kept saying he had asked for the childrens meals to come quickly but they still didnt arrive. The front of house admitted to us that although capacity was 250 they had booked in well over 300 which impacted greatly on our experience...poor service...food ok but chips cold and the poor staff were running around like headless chickens! Will not be in a hurry to return im afraid.

The place is done out lovely and the staff were good. The menu has a good range of choices but overall the food is average and At full price is very over priced for what it is. My pasta dish was very bland and the soup I had for starter was the smallest soup portion I’ve ever been served in a restaurant. My partner had the manchego and chorizo starter which was lovely though.

Very disappointed with our recent visit this week .I used to love Bulls head when it was a pub and visited regularly, but it's totally different now. The chicken supreme was a very small portion of chicken and had literally hardly any vegetables at all, 2 tiny strips of carrot and 3 of the tiniest narrowest green beans I have ever seen in my life plus a couple of very small potatoes!! Completely overpriced, thank goodness it was half price thanks to the government scheme! I have had the same meal before and it was a much bigger portion so not sure why they have reduced the size so much. Ordered coffees and mini puddings....they should be called micro puddings, the tiniest portion (much less than The Red Kite pub give you for their mini puddings...at full price this would have been such a rip off. Sorry but we won't be returning now after this latest visit, not a patch on the pub before it was taken over by Ego. They always gave you plenty of veg with every main meal. Here you seem to have to pay extra for a side of veg if you want anything like a decent portion. Such a shame as it is nice inside, but the food and prices completely let it down.

Excellent service and in the main the food was also good quality. We dined at lunchtime, for two people. The booking system was very easy and we were met with a warm welcome by the staff. We were shown to our table and it was clear that the social distance protocols were being adhered to. Our waitress explained that the menus would stay on the table and the procedure for bringing food and drinks to the table and collecting plates. We ordered 2 coffees to start, as well as a starter and main each. We also ordered a second coffee and had a jug of tap water as well. Our starters were goats cheese, on toast with red onion marmalade and the Gambas Pil Pil. Both were excellent. Our mains were a mixed hanging kebab and the hanging chicken & chorizo kebab. The chicken and chorizo kebab was great, 12 inches and cooked / seasoned perfectly. The mixed kebab was a major disappointment - 5 chunks of meat and only about 6 inches, including the vegetables. Two of the chunks of meat were pork belly and so pretty much just fat. This was the only real disappointment of the whole meal. The price for this was £18.95!! In total, after eat out discount, the total price came to just over £40.00, which seemed pretty expensive based on what was served. The quality and flavour was very good, but if it had not been for the discount we would probably have complained. We would definitely go back as the staff and starters were great, but we would absolutely choose different main courses.

Having had a wonderful meal + exceptional service by Jess on 17th Sept with a friend, I booked to have a meal with my family on the 23rd Sept. I am very sad to say it was most unenjoyable. Our table wasnt ready on time so we requeated service for drinks, thus was not forthcoming. Once the table was ready, it took an age before our order was taken despite it only being 5pm and very few in the restaurant. Only two out of our party had starters which were brought in a timely fashion + presented well. The main course however took at least a further half hour to arrive despite other customers walking in after us + them being served way before us. Inevitably we asked what was happening. The paella was a yellow congealed mass served in a black dish that had obviously been on the hotplate because it was black +stuck to the bottom. I had the linguine verde that i had thoroughly enjoyed the week before. It was terrible. There were large pieces of burnt onion + peppers that had been over fried then added to the pasta which had no sauce + was swimming in oil. Totally unedible. Yes i did bring it to the servers attention as it was unedible + it was removed from the bill. But as this was my only choice from the menu i left very hungry and dissatisfied. I had also pre-booked for next Wednesday with other family memebers to accompany me however we were so disappointed i have now cancelled.
