Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This establishment is well closed and maybe should be removed from your list of Hotels, there is history as to the reason for closure but it is definitely CLOSED.

Based on the age of the most recent reviews, and the fact that the in-house Tandoori restaurant has moved to another pub, I suspected that this underwhelming pub might be no more. I can’t confirm this with any certainty, but during our two day visit...it remained decidedly closed.More

Loved the beer garden...its actually a proper garden and a real sun trap. Didn't really enjoy the interior of the pub; we were there mid afternoon and although a few customers were in we didn't get much of a friendly vibe...we also felt the draft...selection was limited. Enjoyed our second visit in the beer garden much more!More

Poor selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. Quite small and very basic and in need of update. After reading other reviews it seems to be best to visit on live music night.

Based on some previous comments I was almost dreading coming here for a pint, but I needn't have worried. So perhaps we should deal with those previous comments first. Complaint was made the the strong smell from the toilets as you enter the pub. The...smell is one of disinfectant and is therefore, in effect, a clean smell. The only other notable aroma is also a good one and comes from the curry kitchen. It smelled superb! The bar here is a typical, roomy public bar with traditional fixtures and fittings. The landlord and landlady (I assume) were friendly as was the atmosphere in the bar. We liked it.More

Popped in for a drink whilst visiting Rothbury. Whole place smelled dirty and felt grimy. Think it probably only used by a few locals by tradition. Wouldn't risk eating there if the smell of the place anything to go by.

If you like a curry, you cant beat this place. You get your drinks in the bar and take them upstairs to the Village Tandoori restaurant. Good selection of delicious indian food. They also do takeaways. Best place in these parts for a good curry.

The pub looks fine, has a pleasant beer garden and has a reputation for live music. However, as we walked through the main entrance the odour of disinfectant was very strong, followed by a dreadful stench of stale urine. We went no further.

I visited the Railway one afternoon just for a drink in the bar. Although the beer - just the one real ale from a local brewery - was tasty, going there was a bit of a mistake as the landlord's attitude was unwelcoming. The other...pubs in Rothbury are all much better, so it's unlikely I'll be going back in a hurry.More

My wife and I had a quick drink in The Railway before our meal in the upstairs Indian restaurant. Service was friendly and prompt. We also purchased a bottle of wine to have with our meal which was lovely and resonantly priced.

I went to the Railway with 3 friends 2 days ago whilst staying in Rothbury on a cycling trip. We always go for a curry at least once during the trip and as this is the only Indian Curry House in Rothbury we had to...give it a go. I can honestly say, everything we ate was delicious . Chicken Chat starters were superb, I opted for the Jal Jul chicken which was hot without burning the roof of your mouth off. Naan breads were top quality especially the Garlic Naan and the Garlic rice was the best I've had. Yes you have to go downstairs to get drinks but the real areas are superb so no issue with that. The Railway is somewhere I would definitely go to again. Top Notch Curry.More

We saw the signs outside the Railway as we walked past it earlier in the day advertising it as an Indian restaurant and, fancying a curry, we went back that evening to eat. As we arrived the barmaid was standing outside and we asked which...door was the way in, she half-heartedly gestured to her right, so we went in to find a totally empty, unappealing, chilly bar with no discernible signs of atmosphere or comfort. We decided not to eat and that the curry would have to wait.More
