Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went here based on some of the other reviews, was disappointed. Had three roast beef’s with 3 starters two terrine and one soup. The food was OK but some of the beef was so tough we couldn’t cut it. The worst part was the bill...at the end £143 which is £47 a head. Stupidly I didn’t take a copy of the bill. We calculated what we had with drinks and got to £114 so can only assume we were hit with a £29 service charge or were miss charged for an extra meal. Either way we won’t be returning!More

As good a pint of Guinness as I’ve ever had. Lovely bar area and attentive staff. Highly recommended and well worth a visit.

Every aspect of our experience of The Ship was friendly, professional, and excellent. From our initial phone reservation, our enquiry about the lunch menu, our welcome, service and food (exceptional!) was just great. We will be returning, and this establishment is a real contender to...other high profile restaurants not too far away!More

Im not sure if this restaurant has been taken over recently, but our experience was certainly not reflected by the 5 star reviews on TA. Maybe it’s the Sunday lunch thats an issue? But our experience was almost impossible to cut roast beef, very tough,...and vegetables which were overdone and inedible and as for the roast potatoes, as another guest reports they were so hard and hollow that they were impossible to cut. I can only think that maybe they had been reheated several times, or came from a catering company ready cooked and reheated? We tried the sweets, the apple pie was OK but the Mont Blanc was certainly not what our experience of that named dessert should be but consisted of a very hard pastry case, again impossible to cut let alone eat, filled with stewed fruit again containing something so hard as to be inedible. Needless to say we left most of it. We did point this out to a member of staff when asked how our meal was and a small discount was made on our bill. Disappointing experience.More

Going out for food just became exciting again! I had no great expectations, a lovely local little pub, unassumingly nestled off the A30… I was warmly welcomed in seated at my table and liked at my menu.. I ordered the Plaice and thought I knew...it would be a standard reliable dish, but WOW! This was an incredible taste sensation and produced with with artistry and real passion. I will say no more, but the Ship inn run by a seriously lovely couple has reignited my enjoyment for going out to eat, what I find!!! DuncanMore

This place is worthy of a Michelin Star! Go before it’s awarded one and the prices treble! Every mouthful is a delight for the senses. Truly outstanding and the best meal I’ve had in years ~ and I eat out often! I can’t recommend highly...enough.More

I am sorry to post such a negative review but the following reflects exactly my experience at the Ship. The one star reflects the very pleasant serice alone. The starter was advertised as game terrine. This proved to be very old, very stale and pallid....If there was any game, it was unrecognisable. No right thinking chef should have let this out of the kitchen. The main course was fillet steak. Now I appreciate that 'medium rare' is somewhat subjective but the small pieces of fillet were almost raw. The accompanying polenta was flabby and tasteless. The desert was listed as a posset. I was intrigued by this because a posset is a drink with eggs, cream and spices for which there are many recipes going back centuries. The dessert offered was a small portion of icecream, with some miscellaneous crunchy bits sitting in a puddle of what I assume was crème fraîche, which was very unfresh. Why did I not complain? It happened to be my birthday treat from my husband and I did not wish to spoil his pleasure. At over £90 The Ship will not be given a secnd chance.More

Basically a good meal - Sunday Lunch large portions but a number of observations that we all felt were relevant. Difficult to cut what was otherwise tender beef. Simply because of blunt cutlery. Simply, they need to provide sharper knives. Roast potatoes were tasty but...again almost impossible to cut. Service was very friendly but slow and unconvincing. Shame, because there was a lot that was good and delicious. The restaurant is very comfortable with lots of parking. However getting through on the telephone or online was a nightmare. They need to improve this or they will lose a lot of customers.More

The Orange wine that was recommended was also delish. The bar...after had a lovely atmosphere too..and its dog friendly. Full English breakfast was also extremely tasty and good quality..also a really interesting building with history, would definatley return.More

I had the most amazing dinner at the Ship Inn last Friday. Had the French onion soup to start with as it’s one of my favorite and I’ve had a lot in the past but this one was by far the best I ever tasted....It was so tasty and generous absolutely yummy! I then had the cod for my main course. Most places overcook their fish this one was cooked to perfection, served with roasted fennel and a pickled fennel salad together with an absolutely gorgeous prawn bisque! I was so full I couldn’t have handle a dessert though they all looked divine: I was really tempted by the canele. I finished my dinner with a chamomile tea (which was served with a homemade daim bar which was to die for) in the cosy lounge bar with a lovely atmosphere from the lively pub. Also as a solo traveler the team was very nice and made me feel at ease. I was recommended a really good glass of Sauvignon blanc from South Africa to pair with my cod and it was just perfect. Overall a perfect experience I would recommend anyone to experience. (Very good value for money too!)More

We visited this nice local pub for dinner recently, which we have been to several times before. On this occasion, we were very disappointed for several reasons. We do not feel we experienced 'value for money' and came away feeling underwhelmed, so probably won't consider...going back for a while. We had 2 main courses, which were tasty, but fairly small portions. We were also not aware that hardly any vegetables were included in either of these dishes, so these presumably have to be ordered separately, which obviously adds to the cost? On a positive note - we did have 2 delicious sweets, as we still felt hungry after the small main courses! We also liked the wine selection, which was reasonably priced.More

Absolutely delicious food. We had lots and lots of starters as they all looked so good and one main course. An excellent Bloody Mary( I am a bit of an expert) and lovely wine. Service was very good and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
