We wanted to go out for a chargrilled steak and a relative recommended the venue for its steaks! Nice welcome and staff friendly. Large airy dining room which was good as we felt comfortable given we are in Covid times. Attentive service and we both ordered sirloin steaks. Sadly, whilst tender, the steaks were completely over seasoned to our taste. I love salt but even I found that the meat was spoiled as I couldn’t taste it through the seasoning. The triple cooked, skin on, chips were very soggy too. Sorry but we won’t be hurrying to go again!

Eat out to help out makes the prices super reasonable, think for two of us sharing with tip was £20 total which is amazing. We got a pizza, Mac n cheese side, chicken strip, halloumi fries. The pizza crust was a little over crisp and for a prosciutto pizza, was a little sad looking with just once slice of meat shredded across a slice or two! The flavours for the starters and side were ok but nothing too special. Love the beer garden though, really spacious and staff are always polite.

Three of us had lunch last Tuesday, two of us taking advantage of the half price steak menu (on Tuesdays, featuring a choice of four 8oz steaks). I requested rare and my friend requested medium to well; both were cooked perfectly. Mum had the cod and chips. Both the fish and chips were very good, but the peas and tartare sauce were dry in their ramekins, as if they’d been left under the lights at the pass for too long, which was a shame. Wine was good. Tap water was nicely presented. Service was perfectly judged and respectful considering we were a bit indecisive which could have been irritating!

Visited on a Sunday afternoon, I understand it was a bit busy, however, the standard of service should not have been so terrible! We waited about 20 minutes just to order drinks and food - we had to approach a member of staff to make the order although we had been told someone would come to our table. After a half an hour wait, our mains arrived (we hadn’t even had our starters yet!!!). We informed the waitress and she brought out our starters which had been forgotten and judging by how the butter had turned to liquid with the dough balls they must have been sat there a while. Thankfully, the food was really nice, the halloumi fries were the best I have ever had! My partner asked for some mayonnaise, which we never received. My partner asked for some glasses of tap water, which we never received and had to reorder. We asked for the bill, waited for the card machine but it was taking to long so my partner ended up going inside to pay. Apparently the optional service charge is not optional considering the waitress just but the charge on anyway. I would happily eat the food again and the venue is lovely. The staff just need to make some big improvements.

Hi Karina G, Firstly, thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback of your recent experience and I apologise that your visit to us was not an enjoyable one. Sunday was an extremely busy day for us, with every table in our garden full most of the day, and I'm very sorry to read this affected service. Since relaunching we aren't offering bar service, only table service across the entire pub. This is the first time we have done this, so we as a team have encountered a few teething issues, which we are working hard to ensure don’t happen again. As a team, we really pride ourselves on our service, and I apologise that on this occasion the service was not to our normal standard. The kitchen team are really pleased to read your positive comments about the food. They have also been working extremely hard the past few weeks, so it’s great for them to have some great feedback. If you could drop me an email with the time you visited and where you sat, I’d like to look into this further. Booked in for Sunday lunch (on Sunday afternoon), to be told on arrival that they had no Sunday roasts left, still given the Sunday menu but without the roast only a few items remained. After waiting 20 minutes for someone to take our order, I attempted to use the 'order and pay online' QR code on the menu and table, unfortunately I was taken to a website that had lots of lovely looking restaurants I could order food from, unfortunately none of them were the restaurant I was sitting in, after a further 10 minutes a waiter took pity on us and asked for our order. Opted for Sausage, Mash, Onion Gravy with Cabbage, to be fair the sausages were reasonable, however the onion gravy was completely bereft of onions and was a knee deep pool of watery bisto, in truth it may have been some other brand of gravy granules mixed with too much boiling water, but cheap, free from onions gravy granule gravy it was. I placed a small cordon around the table to ensure any small children were safe from the risk of drowning, and promptly ordered some heavy duty snorkelling gear from Amazon to commence the search for the mouth-watering cabbage I had been promised. Unfortunately the cabbage was as absent as the onions, I thought it may have been hiding under the gallon of bisto under which everything was submerged, it was getting difficult to see as all that gravy had disintegrated the mash, but alas after an optimistic search, the cabbage was not to be found and the search called off due to bad weather. On telling the waiter about this after he politely asked if everything was OK, he simply muttered "oh dear" in a completely ignorant manner and then wandered off, I had hoped he had wandered off to resolve the situation, or possibly to put on a pair of fishing waders to show me the secret hiding place of the submerged savoy but no, he waltzed off to use his charm and personality on some other victim of over optimism. Not a great experience, crap food, poor customer service and a plethora of signs offering a Sunday roast on a Sunday afternoon which had run out by Sunday lunch time, quite stunning really.

We went here for Sunday lunch as they informed us you could take your dog in. All I can say is what a disappointment it was. We all had a Sunday lunch, 2 chicken and 2 pork, the meal was not even hot so I sent mine back to have a new one brought to me, this was missing the Yorkshire pudding and stuffing, still not that hot. On complaining when we paid they knocked 20% of the bill. Can’t say I’ll be returning.

Celebrating our friends birthday, we decided to come here for some food and refreshments - AND WE WILL BE RETURNING FOR SURE! Due to current circumstances, we had to be divided across two tables outside. However this was no problem whatsoever as they the staff assigned us tables alongside one another, which meant we could still enjoy our time together and communicate with one another with ease. Amazing roast dinners and great value for money with the kids menu. Special mention to the floor staff who are all very polite and helpful. In particular, a young man called Jake, who was extremely attentive and faultless throughout our visit. Even the children enjoyed playing with him whilst waiting for their food. Hats off to you all!

Went for another Tuesday 50% Steak Night offer with the family. Obviously gives the opportunity to try the pricy big steaks and they were absolutely sublime. I almost felt guilty paying half price because possible the best steaks we’ve had in many years. Felt like giving a standing ovation to the chef...!!

Reserved online for evening meal. The restaurant was fairly busy but tables were well spaced out and offered at-table ordering too. Food and drinks arrived quickly but it didn’t feel rushed at all. Great selection of main courses and a good selection of drinks as well.

Visited on Tuesday 5 April as a family of 4. Just about everything was as bad as things get in a restaurant Specifically: We walked in and my sister in law indicated we had booked a specific table. The head waiter suggested we sit somewhere else since they had a big party in next to that table and it might be noisy. They then sat us next to another table immediately adjacent to another big party who were noisily celebrating a birthday. Made absolutely no sense ! Young lady serving our table was very pleasant but very inexperienced and really didn’t seem to have a handle on things Ordered our drinks which included a bottle of white wine, which turned up barely chilled. . Amongst our starters was some focaccia bread. It turned up as a small roll with a sprig of rosemary sticking out of it. The sort of presentation a 12 year old might think up. We all smiled but it seemed to cement the feeling of amateurism which pervaded the restaurant. Additionally, the quantities were mean and overpriced We ordered four steaks. When these were brought to the table we asked for steak knives. A tub containing 3 steak knives arrived. We asked for a 4th only for the waitress to come back a few minutes later and tell us there wasn’t an additional steak knife to be had in the restaurant The quality of the steaks was poor. Very poor. I have eaten better quality supermarket beef. The steaks were shockers Despite the inexperienced waitress never once did the head waiter come over and enquire whether everything was ok. On our way out of the door he finally asked how we had found things. I couldn’t even be bothered to answer properly, I just smiled and we shuffled out. All disappointed that our family evening had been so unsuccessful. My message to the management, lift your game. This was as bad as things get. You don’t reserve any repeat business from our family and given some of the other recent reviews it appears some sort of overhaul is required.

Visited for lunch on Friday 5th. Lovely decor and setting. Service was friendly and accommodating. £10 lunch options were disappointing faced with deep fried chicken and chips, deep fried calamari and chips, pizza (unclear) possibly with chips, sandwiches and chips, I was looking for the promised light lunch options. I picked calamari and ended up with a bowl of the greasiest battered calamari I have ever eaten and a bowl of tepid chips, with possibly 10 strands of picked cabbage!?! The calamari bowl was visibly thick with oil. My brother and father ordered steak sandwiches and got old cold sliced roast beef and that was £2 extra?? Also we waited for about 45 mins for food and there were only maybe 5 or 6 tables occupied and a small private function. My tips are: 1. plan a varied summer lunch menu with a couple of healthier options. (If all the meals are 90%carbs and fried - this is not varied) 2. Make sure hot food is delivered hot 3. Cook fried food so it is not greasy. 4. Have enough staff to cover function and dining room. 5. Maybe get a chef who knows how to cook and present good food. 6. Put £10 dishes only on the £10 menu. Very disappointed- I won’t be back.

So 3 of us for Sunday lunch, 15 May. It was quiet when we arrived at 1.30pm. I did think this wasn’t a good sign. I was right. Poor service, however I don’t blame the staff, all very young and inexperienced, and I suspect had had little to no training. A nibble to start with. Almost passed as ok. 3 roast pork with the trimmings. It was passable. Good amount of pork and the crackling was excellent. The vegetable side dishes were so poor and the red cabbage tasted burnt. We had to ask for apple sauce and extra gravy. The desserts were terrible. Sticky toffee pudding, cold pudding and cold toffee sauce with a rock solid frozen poached pear. The chocolate bomb was not really any better even after the waiter dropped it off the plate on the table! We sent them back. And asked not have a repeat and ended up with giving dessert a miss. They knew the desserts were wrong and didn’t charge and gave us our drinks free too with an apology. Although they did what they could at the time it should have been better. You don’t want to complain and get free drinks, you just want a nice meal and pay a good price. Best thing was the G&T

The setting is nice round the back - it's a spacious gastro pub woth a large garden to sit out in. They offer an expensive but plentiful kids menu (£8, 3 courses). We've been a few times now and ordinarily get kids meals and drinks for the garden, though we've once eaten as a larger group and spent a small fortune (food is not cheap). But today I've felt really let down by the young, unsympathetic staff for being governed by the £ rather than good friendly customer service, to the extent that I won't be returning again with my young family. Within minutes of trying to feed my 3 year old her (very hot) pasta and see to my older child's pizza plus look after my young baby, my bellini drink got caught and spilt down my front. I was gutted, £7.50 wasted, and I went to the bar for tissue explaining i'd just lost my drink. The young bartender gave the pretence of sympathy handing me paper to dry my t shirt, saying she knew exactly how I felt, and saw to making me a replacement. She then placed a card machine in front of me. Realising though a loyal frequent customer she intended to charge me again, I walked back to my table as I hadn't brought my card with me. I swiftly decided I can't justify another £7.50 on a small drink so left sad and dejected with my baby to walk home, my girls still eating with their dad. Upon leaving I heard a chorus of bar staff say "bye now" mockingly. Just a horrid feel to it all, we won't be back any time soon...

Hi Sashsquatch, Firstly, I would like apologise for the bartender attempting to charge you for your replacement drink - I am certain this was simply a mix-up on our behalf. We are working with a new team for the summer. As part of their training, all staff members are told to greet the guests upon arrival and departure of the restaurant. The bar staff were simply following the steps of service and were not trying to mock you as you left; however, apologies again if this was misinterpreted. We sat down at our table only to listen to the complaints from the table next to us , about the food , the service , everything in general . I had an extremely poor Caesar salad , it was a dry over cooked piece of chicken on some iceberg that was it there was nothing “Caesar” about it and I paid £15 for the privilege of that , along with a very over priced standard glass of wine . It was poor all of it .

We have just returned from a bank holiday meal for 4 at the Pointing Dog. To start with the positives, the starters were good. The scallops (queen not king so very small) were sweet and cooked very well and the pea dressing was lovely. The terrine was also very nice. For the mains my husband had the fish and chips (good) and my dad had the pork belly (which also was tasty but no crispy crackling as confirmed by the waitress). Both mum and I had the duck. You get 2 pieces as well as the bonbon. We both had a succulent piece but the second was over cooked. The skin on both was not crispy and so we left it. The main concern was the accompanying potatoes and broccoli. They were very cool in temperature (perhaps they had been left on the pass) and the two sides of triple cooked and truffle chips were also cold. We were provided replacement sides which were very slightly warmer but dry (perhaps just warmed through). Whilst, when prompted by us at the bill stage, the sides were refunded and we were given a small a discount on the duck meals (which was appreciated) I’m sorry to say this gesture was given by the bar staff with no apology or concern. Despite paying over £170 still for our meal we were made to feel like we were “causing a fuss”/ a nuisance. This is a real shame because we think there is excellent potential at this pub, good ingredients, and a talented chef, albeit needing some tweaks to the service and delivery times ( which could be could be much better). Overall, and sadly, after our service today we will likely wait a while before returning.
