We stopped in here at the end of a long tour to see Shetland’s award-winning fish & chips shop. We got the big fish & chips battered, small fish & chips panko-breaded and mushy peas. There were many other options on the menu for our meal, but we opted for the standards on our first visit. It was quite crowded, requiring either a reservation or takeaway, but food came out quickly. Overall, the food was pretty well-done. We’re certainly glad it’s here, upholding the classic tradition.

Probably the best fish and chip shop in Shetland. We dropped in for lunch on a day trip to Brae - no really! We had breaded fish and chips. Both were really nice. I have noticed that a lot of Scottish chippies take the chips out before they are browned as much as I like, but Frankies do them perfectly, not as far as double cooked, but just right. The fish was tasty too. We also noticed that there was a noticeable lack of greasyness - fantastic. We had a flat white each after the meal, and what I liked was that it wasn't served in the traditional 8 ounce cups, but these looked like 12 ounce cups, a much better size of drink. On the day two breaded fish and chips to eat in were £23, and two flat whites were £4.80

This is a small restaurant looking out to the sea. It is super busy with dine in customers as well as take away. We had to book for lunch a couple of days out as there was no availability on the day we just showed up. We ordered pan fried scallops which were so good. Nicely cooked, none were over cooked and obviously very fresh. Mussels in blue cheese and bacon sauce, absolutely delicious with lots of sauce which was tangy and salty and very hot. Loved this. And we had smoked haddock in batter - a revelation! Why have I not had this before? You can tell that all the seafood is so fresh and it was all so delicious.

We decided to stop off here on the way home from a day out in Lerwick so we didn't have to cook when we got home. We arrived nice and early, only to discover all the tables were reserved. However they made an exception so we ordered the vegetarian option, chickpea burger and chips. Which was tasty if a bit too crispy on the outside (fried from frozen?). During the meal we took our time and enjoyed the view and another couple came and were also seated. I also had an espresso, which was sadly was cold and only a single. When we came to pay all the other tables were still empty. Why do small eateries like this allow reservations? Sure they must be losing money doing this. Certainly repeat custom from those turned away. I mentioned to the supervisor about the coffee being cold, that it was probably due to the fact that their machine was not set at the right temperature (94C). She just shrugged, as if she didn't care. Later, annoyed that I had just paid £2.40 for a tablespoon of cold coffee, I messaged the owner. They read it immediately but I never got a response. Which to me says it all: WE SERVE OURSELVES. Won't be going again. Me and how many other locals?

We called the night before to book a table for 6pm for 2. We were asked if we could make it for 5.45 but due to ferry times we would be nearer 6. We were told this was ok. Unfortunately our ferry was a few minutes late and when we arrived we were very rudely told the cafe closed at 6 ( what eating establishment closed at 6pm?) but if we ordered at the counter we could sit in. We were then glared at by the staff even though the establishment closed at 7 it was made clear that they were getting ready to leave at 7. Shame as the food was nice but felt we had to rush it down, was it explained in the phone call we would have made alternative plans.

5 of us went for lunch and 4 were happy with their meal. I, however, was very disappointed, was told I couldn't have the peerie menu as this was the child's menu, I know that peerie means small not child but didn't want to make a fuss. Had the haggis pudding, what a big mistake, very dry and tasteless chips awful.

Arrived and there were plenty of empty seats, inside and on the outside balcony, we asked if we could get a table, we’re told no they are all reserved, so we knew we had to eat out in car park, no problem. The menu above the counter seemed to have different fish as either a “supper” or “single”, I asked what the difference was and they said just the size, the single was smaller. So I ordered to haddock singles, expecting a smaller fish & chips, we we paid and were handed a buzzer for when the order was ready. After about a 15 minute wait, which wasn’t unreasonable as it was busy and it looks like it’s all cooked fresh, we buzzed, so went inside to collect. There was a family who walked in ahead of us and they said they hadn’t booked but could they sit inside, they were welcomed inside to a choice and of any open table, we asked again if we could sit inside but told a curt “no” and she turned her back and walked away. Collected our order but no chips were included, just 2 portions of a very greasy battered fish. Would not recommend, sorry as it’s a lovely view from the car park

We have been going to Frankies since in inception. we "local" Unfortunately, in recent visits, the take away portions are tiny in comparison to previous. You only find this out once you have departed. In future, as this is a good "chip shop" I will be opening the box before I leave and check. This review is only made in the hope that portions well return to more favorable amount for the £13 price tag as at present my last servings were a joke.

I have no idea how I managed to get their system wrong as the shop is so tiny but apparently I ordered in the wrong way so despite asking to sit in and having the rope gate opened for us when our food arrived we were thrown out! Apparently to sit in you have there is a different menu but there is nothing to tell you this. And I was not allowed to pay the difference so was forced to pack up my food and leave with a very sad 5 year old who couldn't understand why she wasn'tallowed to stay. When we got outside and found somewhere to eat the real problems were clear. My chips were missing and the child's portion of haddock and chips were chicken..... not sure how a fish shop fails to give ypu fish. To add insult to injury I'd been provide a knife and fork to eat mussels in cream soup which they admitted when they gave me had "a lot of liquid". I was too embarrassed to go back to complain having been thrown out in front of everyone else in the shop so we just sat and ate half of what we'd paid for, which were average at best. Total disaster. Not sure why people rave about this place. Seems it has suffered from its popularity and makes no effort to keep standards up.

Booked in advance as advised on the website as one of us is coeliac. Fish and chips were huge and both standard and gluten free meals were tasty. Tea was also lovely and hot! Staff were friendly and the seated area was clean. Served promptly. Quite pricy for fish and chips at over £30 but tasty and always good to feel reassured when you have a food allergy!

Was recommended to us by some friends in Lerwick. Looking at fish farm pens out the restaurant window, I was inspired to order mussels. The sauce was tasty, but what I received reminded me of the mussels I once returned to Costco in Canada because they were about half the size of canned baby clams. As mussels have become a popular dish, I understand it puts pressure on the supply and promotes a premature harvest, but I feel that rather than sell tiny mussels, the vendor should just tell the customer they are not available. My son had the fish with panko batter which he enjoyed, but was disapointed in the chips which he suspected were a pre-packaged commercial frozen product. We asked the server what kind of fish it was, and apparently it was pollock.

A brilliant find in an area that does not have much in the way of quality eating establishments. We went for lunch and the food was of a very high quality. We were particularly impressed with the scallops. The small dining room had wonderful views and there was space to sit outside in fine weather.

We had lunch here on 8th July 2024 The fish was huge! Never had such a big piece of fish! The batter was light and crunchy and the fish was white, soft and juicy. They make their own chips! No frozen pre-processed food here! Best fish n chips ever!

The reason I've given this a poor rating is because of the appalling service. We wanted to eat in the restaurant. It was a Sunday & I'd noted that the restaurant part closed on Sundays at 18:00. I would've booked but didn't know what time we'd be there. As it turned out, we were there about 16:30/17:00. There were lots of empty tables but there was a sign saying Fully Booked. I asked the young chap behind the counter if we could get a table but he said no. When I pointed out all the empty tables, he spoke to his supervisor (they were all very young) but she said no. We were disappointed but ordered a carry out anyway. This didn't take long & we sat in the car eating it. It was delicious - lovely large, fresh haddock and more than enough chips. Top marks for the food. However, I was still annoyed that we hadn't been able to have a proper meal at a table so when I went back to dispose of our rubbish, I looked in at the restaurant - even more empty tables! I pointed this out to the young whippersnapper behind the counter but he just looked embarrassed. As well he might. I don't think it was his fault but clearly the staff in charge were just too lazy & couldn't be bothered having to serve a meal inside, serve drinks, clear up afterwards etc. Just atrocious service and I see there are other comments in a similar vein.

Frankie’s was recommended by a friend, and did not disappoint. Excellent (breaded) haddock and chips, in a modern, friendly setting. We had booked, though takeaways are also a much in demand specialty. As Britain’s most northerly fish and chip shop, that would make Frankie’s worth a visit no matter what. But the great quality and the wide menu choices would be at home anywhere. Perhaps our issue, but we did miss not having a glass of wine. Frankie’s is a ‘dry’ venue.
