Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited with my husband following a recommendation on local social media - we prefer to support small businesses and try authentic food. This Spanish restaurant has tables in a narrow street with a view of the Mar Menor. Friendly helpful staff and it soon became busy with local people, in fact extra tables were brought out to seat groups who wanted to eat. There’s no menu to choose from and you are reliant on the waiter making suggestions. The staff didn’t speak English - no problem as my Spanish is good enough to understand what the waiter was saying and I ordered food for two. A wrong assumption was that prices would be similar to other local restaurants we have eaten in, so I wasn’t too put off by no menu. The food was lovely - faultless, tasty, fresh and plentiful, however the bill was highly over-inflated. I was told the staff weren’t able to itemise the bill or accept card payments because their machines were broken, so I was unable to check or actually see how much anything cost. To compare with 2 similar restaurants very close to this one, our bill at La Ponderosa was by far the highest and I was unable to see how they had reached the figure we were charged. A massive shame as the food was lovely but I feel we were ripped off and as a result we won’t be returning. Please be aware of the risks of a no menu/no itemised bill approach - we were stung and it certainly spoilt our evening.

In a little side street up from the promenade, in the old town, is La Ponderosa. We found it about 6 years ago and make a point of coming here on our annual trip to Los Alcazares. We are always made to feel welcome by Alex and his staff and love being amongst the local families dining there. The food, as always, is fantastic. There are no menus but they will recommend lots of dishes and tapas for you to try. Our favourites are.... Calamar a la plancha (squid), pulpo (ocotopus), Gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns), Ponderosa ensalata (house salad). We would definitely recommend a visit here if you want to try something typically spanish.

My friend and I called to the Pondrosa last Saturday night. We are two older ladies and we asked if it was ok just to have a drink there.A waiter turned on us and said" we dont do English you are in Spain now".He kept gesturing towards the door he then raised his voice in front of customers and shouted "this is Spain we speak Spanish no English here."another waiter was clearly embarrassed and asked to us sit but we left in a hurry. We have been to Spain twenty times and never came across such racism before.

Bar manager very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about wines. The couple of tapas we tried were up there with the best (especially the patatas bravas). We will definitely be returning!

We have been travelling to Los Alcazares for the past ten years and make a point of visiting every time! We happened upon this little place quite by accident on our first visit and we are so pleased we did. The owners and staff are Spanish but try a little English, its definitely not a problem, especially if the son is in attendance as he translates for us. We order the octopus and the squid every time and they are absolutely delicious. I have never had better anywhere else. We also try a few other tapas depending on how hungry we are. It really is the perfect spot for a cold beer and a spot of lunch! Give it a try, if you don't try the pulpo you are missing out.

Just finished a beautiful lunch at La Ponderosa 2 streets back from the promenade We would definitely recommend the garlic prawns and tomato salad which were full of flavour The staff generally only speak Spanish which was again delightful as we worked our way through the menu. A genuine Spanish treat particularly if your looking for the Spanish experience

After recommending my son to try this bar after we went there, he was well and truly ripped off! We went on the tapas trail and recommended this place to our son who went there the following week. No tapas left so they were offered an alternative. As it turned out, some terrible food which was so bad that they had to leave it and then they had the cheek to charge them for drinks which were overpriced and probably sourced from Lidl. They had to pay as they were intimidated by the staff and this totally ruined their night. Give this place a wide birth, they don't deserve the custom or time we gave them or the repeat business my son did tonight. Such a shame as we really love to give our custom to the nice bars and off route locations, don't bother with this place guys though because they will fleece you!!!! Beware!!!
