We decided to venture into town as opposed to our usual beach front diner. We walked around and decided on Real Meals, there were people in and it looked homely. After a good walk we both fancied a breakfast and although we were a little late the lady said it would be no problem. My wife and I enjoyed one of the tastiest breakfasts we've had when eating out, everything had flavour and proper toast accompanied by a pot of tea and real cups. Nothing fancy about this place but it's very clean, comfy and lovely people look after you, and the produce on sale covers most items for the kitchen. We've found our new place

Chowder soup, great stock, fantastic smoked fish, potato white fish, sweetcorn and cream. Could not decide whether it was clam or razor fish. Chowder was the best Ive had, Garlic bread just perfect, big chunky bread covered in butter and tarragon.... rennies at the ready lol. What a treat, we eat here often whilst I visit James Cook for cancer treatment. Just lifts my heart simply cooked great ingredients. That's all good food is its so simple how do others struggle? Coffee as usual good strong coffee with a good oil hit, too many have over roasted beans to make a thick black cup with no flavour as the oils are burns off. Sweets I had a Scone my partner had the star which is the lemon tart. Tiny lemon tart tastes fantastic but have two you will be so disappointed it is so small.... Come on fantastic food you have served this tiny dessert for so long please get it bigger or two for price. We love this restaurant, great staff dedicated to great food and coffee wish we lived closer!

We visited and found the menu with mostly breakfast dishes, luckily, before we left we saw the specials board. The whole thing was a bit over bearing and I struggled to find a meal I knew I would like. I decided, reluctantly, to have the Blackpudding, spicy chorizo and poached egg salad... what a fantastic dish, so unexpected full of interesting flavours, textures and seasoning loved it my partner had fried fig salad... again this was exciting and very well put together. We returned three times and the breakfast, meat and Veggie options were highest quality produce. PS coffee is outstanding scones are first class with amazing raspberry jam, so sweet and sour!

We have been to Real Meals many times. Unfortunately when we went today we found things have slipped. It is not table service any more so you have a queue at the counter, but the worst thing is WHY DO YOU PUT HOT FOOD ON A COLD PLATE.
We had the breakfast (I had the small breakfast 2 slices of bacon, 1 fried egg, sliced bread (this used to be lovely thick bread ) and a cup of tea £6.95 which is a bit over the top. But both of our breakfasts came on stone cold plates, so the food was cold. It does not cost to heat the plates up.
Bring back the old couple who used to run it.

Came for breakfast ordered two small breakfasts and two coffees. Breakfast came 15mins for £6.95 it couldn't get more basic. No serviettes no condiments. Asked for coffees four times eventually came after meal. Had to be returned as like water. Staff pleasant but everything else well below par.

…Every single time I visit this deli, I seem to have to wait an extraordinary length if time to get served at the counter (when purchasing goods) as opposed to eating in. Staff seem to have perfected the art of not looking at you and (I guess) hoping some other member of staff will, so they do not have the burden of attending to you. Perhaps there is an unfair weighting of attention given to the food service and deli counter, to the detriment of all else 🤔🤷♀️
I’m loathe to complain because it’s local and this deli really should be ‘good’. However, I agree with many of the lower rating reviews given here…not even close inspection is needed to reveal the place has poor hygiene. Dropping a coin and bending to retrieve it revealed a rather disgusting reality…people - the chairs need raising up once in a while in order for a thorough sweep and mop (I know, I ran a cafe myself for 7 years!!)
I suppose the purchase of 2 x deli sandwiches today (for take out) is what finally prompted me to pitch my point. Despite paying just shy of £10 for 2 x baguettes, they were really a bit dismal, and thrown together with very little care.
If it wasn’t the only venue locally that I could purchase certain specific and specialist food items, I certainly would not go again. Least of all for the fact that hours of my life seem to slip away whilst waiting at the till to pay…

Staff require instruction in describing food and given an understanding of food.
It is not clear on the ‘blackboard’ which meals are vegetarian, vegan, allergy etc and the staff on questioning did not make this clear.
The Staff do not know that ham and bacon are one and the same.
Haddock chowder contained meat. This was not made clear from the outset.
Service was slow and The food was thrown on the table and the staff member asked twice who was having what. We asked for sauce and this was also thrown on the table.
The baguette was rolling round the plate, no sign of any dressing, poor value for money.

Very disappointed!!! Ordered a Bacon and Brie Baguette, when it arrived it was a sandwich made up of 3 slices of very small, thin bread. I complained to the waitress who went to check in the kitchen, came back and said they had run out of baguettes, no apology. Very expensive small sandwich at £6.95. My partner and I both had a latte which were lukewarm at best. Unfortunately we’re too British, we should have sent it all back and asked for a refund. We’ll choose somewhere else next time we’re in Saltburn.

Visited on a Wednesday lunchtime. It looks OK at first glance but as you look a little longer you start to notice the dirt. I do not know how they had managed a 5* food hygiene rating. Everything, and I mean everything, is covered in a layer of grease and muck. The teapot was stained completely brown, there was an odd orange film on the teacups, teaspoons were filthy. I had a good view of the kitchen and that was also revolting. So glad we never got around to ordering food. Everything is disorganised, the shelves of the "shop" are in disarray (no one knows where anything is!), the cheese display was shocking, the fridge was messy and dirty. The place stunk of fish and grease. We also had the delight of watching staff scrape the waste food off of customers plates in to an open bin right in front of us, the bin was also placed next to a shelf of clean (??) glasses. Disgusting. I've never seen anything like it.

A great deli, but plenty of outdoor seating too. Great selection of cheeses, quiches and sandwiches as well as hot and cold drinks.
We sat inside to get out of the full sun. Parents had a meat sandwich and they made me a vegan sarnie (not on the menu). They also had some yummy cakes to suit all dietary requirements.
We were served by a young lady with glasses on (I wish we knew her name!). She was efficient and very friendly.

First time in this cafe and menu looked impressive. My sister ordered the crab chowder and I had the cheese and onion quiche which I asked for on it's own as didn't want any salad with it. The quiche was okay, nothing special but the chowder was awful. It was just a bowl filled mainly with corn and lumps of potato with a watery crab tasting soup but no white meat in it. I'm surprised my sister managed to eat any of it as I tried one spoonful and that was enough. With one coffee and one tea the bill was well over £21! Obviously nothing was knocked off for not having the salad but over £8 for the quiche even with it was extortionate. My sister needed the Andrews liver salts when she got home so needless to say will not be visiting again. A pity I didn't read some of the reviews on here before we went.

If only you had said something at the time we would have been happy to replace the chowder! We have great reviews for food and service and are full every day. However we always want people to enjoy their visit, so please do mention if something is not to your liking and we will always see what we can do.

We ordered a family sized quiche from Real Meals on our holiday at Saltburn in June 2024. It was cheese, tomato, onion and bacon quiche and tasted absolutely delicious. £18 for over 12 generous slices, the ingredients were of the best quality and the family thoroughly enjoyed it. Don't waste your money on generic supermarket food, get yourselves down to Real Meals for a gastronomic delight!

What I like about this place, is not only the warm friendly welcome, but the fact the cook comes out to the deli to collect the ingredients for your order.
We all went for baguettes, with a couple of them being warm. All were great, and they even put a bit of cranberry sauce in my Brie and bacon, even though it wasn’t advertised.
Although they don’t have a licence, the choice of cold drinks were interesting, in other words not your bog standard .

We were in Saltburn for the day and liked the look of this place for lunch. A waitress with glasses found us a table and we were just sitting down when we were approached by a young waitress with a ponytail. She said “do you know what you want” we quickly chose off the specials board and she just stood there. We thought she was very rude but decided to stay. She brought a tray with the teacups and pot of tea still no hello or smile it was just plonked on the edge of the table as she walked away. Our meals arrived in the same fashion. We asked the young man who was behind the deli counter if we could have two fruit scone to eat in. He brought them to our table with a lovely smile and asked if we’d enjoyed our main course. I went to pay at the deli counter and the lady with the glasses served us again with a smile. The food was lovely and we would have given it five stars but knocked one off because of the service from the young girl. She needs a lesson in customer service and until then should not be at the front serving customers. We noticed she was like this to other customers I think she’s in the wrong job. Would we go again, yes if she wasn’t in that day if she was we would go somewhere else.

We really appreciate you getting in touch, and staying to eat with us! We do try to give work opportunities to everyone, and it has to be said there are more and more young people who struggle to interact socially. We see potential in the particular person you encountered and are trying to help her find her way in life. Though we totally appreciate more training is required! Hopefully when you return she will have improved, as all our permanent staff work so hard to make it a nice place to visit and our chefs cook their hearts out! We’re just trying to do our best to support her, and help her find some inner strength to be able to interact with people. Sorry it did not work out so well for you. Please do come back. X
