This traditional Devonshire country pub in Winkleigh is exceptional. We enjoyed delicious starters followed by Venison T Bone and Triple variety Sausage & Mash, all washed down with a lovely Malbec. The Chef took time to chat to us about the locally sourced products that he had cooked to perfection and the staff were very attentive. We felt the meal was very reasonably priced, so left a generous tip, that was well deserved. It was within walking distance of our fabulous overnight accommodation at Clotworthy House B&B, so perfect. We recommend you take a look at the specials board, excellent!

We were staying near Winkleigh just after lockdown so many restaurants had closed or remained shut. We were lucky enough to get a table booked after walking Alpacas locally at Woolley Animals and were delighted with their menu which was street food based and to our delight included Burritos which was very unusual for this part of the world. Very good they were too! Service was very friendly and welcoming and the best part was a nice chat with the owner who has a wonderful selection of whiskies and introduced me to something new, after which I immediately bought a bottle! Slainte!

The ream at the Kings Arms were great throughout the whole process from accommodating our large group including a dog, through to booking use of their courtesy mini bus. The food was delicious with steaks from the local butcher on the specials board! The team were super attentive during our time at the pub. We were a group of 13 and had a private room within the pub which was perfect! Thank you all for a brilliant evening!

We were really looking forward to our meal out on our holiday in Devon, and had heard good things about this pub/restaurant. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and had a table laid out for the 6 of us in a hidden snug area labelled the Captains Table which was separate from the main room. Our drinks order was taken and then we were issued menus. The waiter asked us if we had seen the ‘specials board’ which we eagerly responded “no” and was informed quickly “that’s good because it’s irrelevant”. We assumed this meant that there weren’t any available so didn’t question further and ordered from the main menu and were comfortable with our choices. It wasn’t until we had finished our meal that we then noticed that other customers seated in the main restaurant were eating different food items that hadn’t been offered to us. When questioned, the waiter gave a response saying ‘the party had eaten there the previous evening and had put a special request in for tonight….’ However when we had settled our bill, and walked back through the restaurant we noticed a very clear ‘specials’ board with some nice starters, main courses and desserts that were obviously available to customers, just not us! We aren’t sure why this was the case, we had pre booked and planned on spending a decent amount of money for a nice meal out so not sure why we were not eligible for the specials clearly on offer? It really spoiled our evening as we felt we had been treated differently to other customers and not offered the full menu available. Disappointing service although we did enjoy the food we were offered.

Despite an email and phone call to reserve, there was no record on arrival and we were seated in the bar area (extremely noisy and lot's of unsavoury language. We both ordered lamb chops (3 apiece but turned out they were not trimmed hence very fatty and seriously overcooked. The landlord apologised about the long wait between courses (we'd shared a sausage starter that was very tasty and a meal in itself). We didn't mind as it gave our stomachs some downtime. I drank a local Winkleigh bitter that was excellent. Perhaps we would have had better luck with one of their many burgers. Still enough places roundabout for us to try without another visit.

Faye and Richard have done absolute wonders with this pub. Everything possible has been thought about carefully and this is really reflected in the level of service and quality of the food and drinks which they have on offer. My partner and I live in nearby Hatherleigh, where there are two pubs on our doorstep yet neither of them come anywhere close to the King's Arms in terms of atmosphere, service or menu. Even throughout the first lockdown, this pub continued to serve its community, and when they could no longer serve hot food or drinks, they diversified into a pop-up fruit and veg shop, delivering fresh produce boxes around the village. The quality of the food is outstanding and they have an amazing selection of locally sourced beers, ciders, wines and gins. This is possibly the best pub in Mid Devon, make sure you visit!

Was so nice when we visited early Summer we vowed to return - food even better! The staff were polite and helpful and when not too busy, happy to chat and put the world to rights. I was amazed that they offer a coach service so that groups can be collected and returned to where they are staying after having had an enjoyable evening- how good is that. The food was plentiful and this time we paced ourselves just selecting a main course each. We were not disappointed and my steak was spot on using beef sourced locally. The owners care and work hard. We wish them every success

Delicious food served by friendly staff. The famed rump steak wasn't available but there were plenty of other excellent options, including vegetarian. They were more than happy for my fussy son to have chips and seasonal vegetables instead of a proper meal. Very tasty sticky toffee pudding.

Four of us thoroughly enjoyed a meal and drinks in this lovey old Devon pub. The service was excellent in our own separate dining room (The Captains Table - seats 8 I think) and the chef very accommodating. My wife doesn’t eat red meat but she liked the sound of the ‘Spooky George’ burger (blue cheese, portobello mushroom and rocket). The chef was happy to swap the beef for the breaded chicken breast offered on their chicken burger. The chef even popped out to check it was ok as he hadn’t offered that combination before. It was lovely, as were the other 3 burgers we had. Heads up, the spicy ‘Dragon’ burger is hot! Our Jamaican friend loved it. The ales were well kept too. Staff were attentive but unobtrusive, the place was clean and very welcoming. Matthew the manager couldn’t do enough for us. They even offer a ride home for parties of 6 and above in their courtesy mini bus (contribution towards fuel is appreciated). Definitely going back!

We enjoyed a lovely meal at The Kings Arms last night. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. They made an effort to talk to us and were kind and patient with our children. In terms of the food, the pub are running a reduced menu at present (I think to ensure staff can adhere to social distancing in the kitchen - but may be wrong about this) however there was still a good selection of options to choose from. There isn’t a separate kids menu, but they offer (generous) half portions of all the menu items, including fish and chips, burger, mac & cheese. Our meals were all delicious and well presented. We also had dessert and the chocolate brownie was particularly tasty! As a strange aside, the team have made a significant effort to ensure staff and visitor safety and have implemented strategies to reduce risks relating to Covid-19 in the most unobtrusive way possible. It’s reassuring to know that this has been considered and is being taken seriously. Unfortunately there was no facility for leaving a tip when paying by card, which was a shame as we would definitely have liked to but aren’t carrying cash at the moment as most places are card only! Thanks for a lovely meal and experience.

We chose The King’s Arms having read the reviews in the cottage information. We were not disappointed . The pub had a lively feel to it but also welcoming to visitors. The service was quick but we were not rushed. The liver and bacon was a generous plate full, on warm plates (that’s good) and the fish of the day was well presented. The menu is a cut above standard pub food and two courses and drinks came to £50 which these days is good. In summary a great evening

We visited here while staying near by and could not fault it!. The staff are all friendly and attentive and the food was excellent. We all had sirloin steak all cooked to perfection and it was so tender that we didn't need steak knives! 3 empty plates were left. Would recommend this little pub for great food and a warm welcome.

It's so nice we went back three or four times for meals & drinks (as we were staying in the village via Sykes Cottages). The owners are great and looked after us at each meal. Excellent food and a selection of local Ales (try the Yellowhammer) & Ciders. This place is steeped in history, especially WW2 where Winkley hosted an airfield nearby. I've uploaded a photo of the WW2 zone map which sits next to the kitchen entrance. Fantastic ambience. Do NOT try & pick up the 10Kg lead bananas on the window sill with an outstreached arm (I kid you not). It can get busy, so in season i'd recommend booking a table in advance if there's more than two of you. When the pub winds down a bit after lots of food orders the owners will come over for a chat, which was really nice. When we are back in that neck of the woods we'll deffo re-visit.

We tried on several occasions to book a table but unfortunately they were fully booked … we finally got in on a Thursday evening… things were a bit chaotic as some staff had left to go back to uni etc … however Kiera , the barmaid / the waitress saved the day ! .and boy was it worth the wait , absolutely fabulous food . We had a pigs in blankets starter with the best pork belly and mash main I think I have ever had together with an apricot , coconut and lamb curry and rice . Finished off with an apple crumble and a divine Jamaican ginger cake topped with poached pears and clotted cream . Will definitely be returning.

On holiday and decided to eat out at the kings arms as recommended by our hosts. Didn’t have signal so contacted them through messenger and Faye (landlady) rang the pub for us and booked us in, even though they were busy and pretty much booked up. And on a Wednesday evening. The pub itself is brilliant, a proper English pub which is warm, friendly full of locals and a fantastic feel to it. The food was superb too. Best burger I’ve ever had!! (The kings dick). We had 2 children with us and although they didn’t have a children’s menu they sorted us out with the option of smaller child portions. Will definitely be coming again when we’re back in the area. I never write reviews but because it was such a great experience I had too!! Thank you to Faye and her great team!
