Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Room was comfortable but very tired and didn't look too clean. Ate in the restaurant which was lovely. Specialise in fish dishes but there are plenty of dishes to choose from. Staff were lovely and accommodating.

This establishment, I’m sure was good many moons ago, it’s tired, broken and in need of a good clean The beds are clean and comfortable, but the bells and whistles don’t work, the staff who clean the rooms must surely see if things are broken...!!!! It’s not my job as a guest to point out your faults , come on guys wake up ! The breakfast was nice , the staff are lovely, but this place needs a good housekeeperMore

Just had dinner with my husband. Lovely decor, food was tasty and staff attentive. Its a little pricey but overall I would recommend it. The function suite also looks lovely.

Just had an excellent lunch here. I had the wagu burger and my boyfriend had the pork belly, both delicious. Lovely staff and fab surroundings . Been several times before, never had any issues and the dog loves it too. Perfect after a muddy walk...at Vogri park.More

The food here is absolutely phenomenal. The staff were so accommodating for example I asked if my coconut monkfish curry could be made with more spice, and it came out with the most beautiful kick to it. The food was genuinely 5*. At first we...thought the service was a little slow but as soon as we even tasted our starters we all agreed it surpassed expectations and was well worth the wait. The steaks were melt in the mouth, cooked to perfection, and the tomato kids pasta was stunning. My 4yo had wanted to meet the chef to say thanks for her pasta and he happily came out..nothing was too much trouble. Fine dining quality with a homely atmosphere.More

For over 12 years, the Sun Inn has been our favorite restaurant in the Edinburgh area. The food was always something a wee bit special. Unfortunately, last nite was not the case. There’s been a significant change in the menu, and not for the better....My partner and I had the soup, which to be honest was good. However my Daughter had the crispy cauliflower which was a complete disaster. From then on it went downhill, two of us had the steak pie, Fray Bentos make better! I’ll stress that we had no issues with the waiting staff, and I felt guilty having to voice my concerns about our experience. We only had four alcoholic drinks, three starters, and three mains. The bill after deductions was still £129! In essence a complete disaster, and having read other recent reviews on here, there does seem to be “issues.” My partner and Daughter have always raved The Sun Inn, and I’m gutted having to write this review……..More

After frequenting sun inn for around 12 years, am utterly disappointed tonight. Pub grub at a la carte prices. Menu disappointing food even more so. What's happened? Was always 5 star for me, however things have taken a turn for the worst sadly 😥

We went at 10.15 am and they had no scones left, mum asked for sugar and sweetners for her coffee, she was brought one packet of sweetner. Because there were no scones my aunt asked for toast it was burnt. Friends asked for cake because...there were no scones, they were told there was only one cake left because the rest were stale, they decided to share the cake but they couldn't eat it because it was stale too. Also the waitrose was grumpy. Very disappointing.More

Went for their Christmas party night and it was a disaster from start to finish. The meal was meant to be a set menu and out of the three courses I had chosen I only got one, and it was tasteless and cold and the...bar ran out of lemonade halfway through the night. When I got in touch to discuss the issues I had they said they would get back to me but didn't bother. Terrible customer service.More

I stayed the night here recently as I was attending a function with my Brass Band (The Newtongrange Silver Band) at The Dean Tavern, Newtongrange. I was allocated Room 1 which was huge and looks out onto the railway viaduct that the Waverley Line (Edinburgh...to Carlisle) used until it was axed in 1969 by Dr Beeching and his report and is now used by the Borders Railway (Edinburgh to Galashiels/Tweedbank) opened in 2015. After the event and a very comfortable night's sleep, I went down for Breakfast quite early and the Staff were busy getting sorted and laying a large fire. I was provided with Fresh Orange Juice and Tea and I ordered a cooked breakfast of Bacon, Lorne Sausage, Tattie Scone, Tomato, Haggis, Black Pudding and a poached Egg which soon arrived. The whole breakfast was exceptional, special mention to whoever cooked it, and my Server Niamh who was pleasant, helpful and a credit to the establishment. It rates as one of the best cooked breakfasts that I've had over the years, and I must award it 10/10. If you are coming along the A7 near Newtongrange this place is excellent and pretty close to Edinburgh City Centre.More

Warm and cosy but very smokey from the open fire. The fish and chips were unremarkable with the batter was very oily. As I cut it you could see the oil being squeezed out of the batter. The knickerbocker glory was far from glorious and...at £9 it was over priced. Supposed to have fruit and a flake. A half strawberry on the top was the fruit offering and the flake was no where to be seen. Such a shame as I really enjoyed going there with friends but will now look elsewhere. It was expensive for what we got. 10% added to the bill.I prefer to tip my server personally.More

Lovely restaurant and food was good but very unwelcoming, unfriendly staff member soured the experience. We encountered hostility and general disdain from the woman who took our orders and money. Staff serving our food, contrastingly, were very pleasant, however the experience was soured and we...are unlikely to return.More

The Sun has been very popular for quite some time and you can see why. Good traditional dishes, with lots of locally sourced produce. Good choices if you’re a seafood lover, or prefer something from the land. Vegan choices were a bit weird, not listed...on the menu but they would do a vegan version of some mains if you asked. Better to be more explicit if you ask me. Decent price. Service was mixed, we had to chase once or twice.More

We arrived for afternoon tea which was delicious and plenty of it. Soup, tomato and basil oil was lovely. Freshly made sandwiches, pork pies, sausage rolls and scotch eggs. Beautiful scones with clotted cream and jam. Brownies and Eton mess. We have all eaten here...before and it has been good. The one thing that let this experience down was the cocktails. We were told there was no cocktail menu as they were waiting on them coming back from the printers but assured they could make anything. My daughter and I decided to have a mojito and a raspberry mojito. They were disgusting. I have never had a mojito made with peppermint cordial, no crushed mint or ice and no sugar syrup. Never have I tasted anything like it. After the young man bragging that he could make anything and they were not cheap. Even the mocktails were just pure sugar.More

We go yearly for birthday breakfast. I read a couple of negative reviews prior to booking, quickly forgotten on arrival. Restaurant was warm and cosy with the large coal fire. Plenty of choice on the menu. Food was of high quality and the staff were...very attentive, nothing was problem. 5 star service and restaurant. We#ll be back.More
