2024
Motherland Spice is a family run restaurant started in 2012. Since opening we have been highly successful because of our unique, authentic Indian & Nepalese cuisine. Motherland Spice has brought expert chefs from India & Nepal to bring the real taste of authentic cuisne in Britain. We are famous in Scotland for our 'Chicken Tikka Baja' and 'Lamb Tawa' dishes and are proud to be the only restaurant in Scotland to serve these two dishes. We also specialise in our South-Indian cuisine. At Motherland Spice we like to think of our food as a journey, one during which we can take you places which will excite, places you might not have thought of going, but ones you will enjoy once you get there. Our menu takes you on a trip from the ultra-cool slopes of the Everest to the fiery plains of Madras, from the lush valleys of Swat to the bountiful Indian Ocean, with more than several stops along the way.

This was the second time I have driven from glasgow to Saltcoats for this absolute gem of a restaurant. After my first visit I haven’t shut up about how great it was so I decided to take some family with me hoping that I would be proven correct. I was not disappointed. The food atmosphere and staff are easily the best of ANY type of food I have ever had anywhere in the world. The spicy onions are the best I’ve ever had and they kept them coming as much as we wanted. We had the sharing platter and mixed pakora, which were so fresh and flavourful. Also had the chicken tikka poori which was just awesome. The mains were South Indian garlic chilli chicken, chicken korma, lamb curry and a fish and chips. The South Indian chicken was to be honest just INCREDIBLE, so fresh. So flavourful so stunning. The korma was gorgeous too. Very tasty for such a mild curry. My father’s fish and chips was HUGE. I’m not a seafood person so I can’t comment. However he is a fussy eater and ate until he couldn’t eat anymore which was a lot as he had 2 massive fish fillets and enough chips to float a boat. We had rice and nan and chapati to accompany which were just perfect accompaniments and sat well with the main attraction. Between all of that plus 2 rounds of drinks I was expecting to see a bill of well over £100. So when I received a bill of £89 I was bowled over! I am not a tipper ( mr pink from reservoir dogs) but I had to give them a massive tip because the whole experience is just incredible. I would highly recommend any one to travel here for food. It is better than any restaurant I have been to in glasgow. Thank you motherland spice We will meet again

I’ve came in for lunch as well as dinner on many different occasions and each time the food is absolutely faultless and delicious! The restaurant itself is modern authentic and also busy regardless what day or time you go it’s very popular and speaks volumes of the food. The menu has plenty to offer and you can add your favourite dish for lunch for an extra £1/£1.50 which I often do as I really enjoy the jalfrezi. My only small complaint critique is sometimes there can be a bit of a wait as they are extremely busy day in day out. Must over all a must try when in the area you will not be disappointed.

I travelled with my better from Glasgow to try this long established and highly rated restaurant. First impressions were good as even on a cold windy mid week evening the place was busy. We were offered a la carte, table buffet or the full buffet and went for the latter. Service was quick to start with. After the sliced onions we went to the buffet that had about 5 starters and 5 mains. We were asked our nan preference. Starters were ok as were the mains. However the food ran out quickly and we had to wait over 15 mins for it to be replenished by which time our nan was cold . Disappointed to say the least .

It was a great family meal ruined by their ignorant attitude. Positive First where it’s due- the food was great and warm. Service good and they served drinks well. We had the table booked for 6pm and we were seated for then. We ordered straight away and I would consider ourselves fast eaters, we don’t muck about and we’re all hungry. However, you can only eat it as it is served, We ordered ice cream at 19:15 via our table waitress,The male owner came up saying 4 ice creams, shot away and put down what we did not order. Only 3 for a start, different flavors etc. So we said that’s not what we ordered, they then got the correct order, While this is ongoing we got the bill put down on the table, never asked for it! Would have liked to had the option to have a coffee or liquor. Then within 3 minutes the waitress is up asking is it card or cash. They are whipping away the plates from under us. Pretty obviously they want the table back for 19:30, but that was never mentioned Every table was full and a queue going out the door , so they obviously book up too many people and as soon as your finished your meal then get out. Next, We all agreed we have never experienced this anywhere in the world before, shocking way to treat paying customers. We would have been leaving any way but it was obvious there was no choice. There’s lots of good Indians out there so needless to say to say I’d go to the Torranyard all day long now, blows them right out the water.

We were greeted with a warm and shown to our table. We chose one of the booths just under the skylight which really adds to the lovely fresh decor inside and gives restaurant great light. The restaurant is spotless and I loved that the had traditional music playing at a nice level in the background. The staff are very friendly and all very attentive. The owner chatted away with us and was delighted to hear we travelled 50 miles to visit his restaurant. On to the food, I had the chicken 65 to start which was presented very well and tasted great. Lovely subtle spices and nice moist chicken. My wife had the Bhutan Sadeko, a lovely grilled lamb dish with chillies and spices served with grilled onions and peppers. I can honestly say that I have never heard of this dish before and was blown away by how tasty a dish this was. Highly recommend this if you have never had it. It is on the hot side so just keep that in mind if you can't handle the heat. Mains, I had the Rara Gohst which is minced lamb (keema) with lamb chunks too. Was prefect heat level for me and the lamb just melted in the mouth. My had the chicken tikka Bagem Bahar, chicken tikka mixed with minced lamb with peppers and onions. Again this was perfect for us heat wise and the dish was cooked and tasted fantastic too. We had a rice and a garlic nan to share. The staff will ask you if you prefer mild, medium or hot and will cook your dish to your liking. The portions are very generous and we had to take what we didn't eat home. No complaints there as it was great to enjoy it all again later on. Great value for money as the menu is very reasonably priced too. Overall we had a fantastic trip to the seaside rounded off with amazing food and service at Motherland Spice. I genuinely can't wait to return, especially for that lamb starter. Well done to everyone at Motherland Spice!!

Amazing food in a modern well run restaurant. It’s always extremely busy regardless what day you go we came during the week and it was near at capacity at lunchtime. The food is absolutely delicious and so athletic. There’s something for everyone and if your favourite dish isn’t on the menu you can pay extra (£1/£1.50) for your favourite at lunchtime which I do I normally get my favourite which is a jalfrezi and it’s always well worth it and delicious! It’s also very good value especially in this day and age and I think that’s why it’s always so busy as well as the fantastic food!

Came in for some lunch with my wife and we had the business lunch you can add on ANY other main dishes for an extra £1 which we both did we had the chicken jalfrezi & the chicken tikka masala as well as a cheese Nan bread. For starters we had chicken pakora and dessert was ice cream and a coffee! Everything was absolutely delicious and the flavours and spices were outstanding and outstanding value for money!! It was extremely busy for lunchtime so I’d highly recommend booking in advance which I did the place was practically full. The decor is clean and modern and the staff can’t do enough to help Daniel especially was wonderful and extremely helpful! Will most definitely be back very soon to try some more dishes! Thanks again.

A family-run restaurant with a “firm hand on the tiller” is hard to beat and the place endorses that belief. The Sharing Platter was a great starter with variety and well-cooked meat and veg to satisfy the most greedy of you 😉 Sweet Chilli Garlic Chicken and good rice and naan with a main course that tempted me to lick the plate - I desisted, on this occasion… Crackling friendly atmosphere with Mum, Dad and one of their offspring on the “floor” and working well. Excellent place with a high number of returning diners 👍

Very busy Saturday night. Staff did their best but it was very noisy and slow service. Disappointed in our starters but mains were good. Vegetable samosas were stodgy with thick pastry and little flavour. Nan was very large and a bit undercooked in parts. If we return it would be on a week night and I would choose my starter carefully.

We have been a few times to this restaurant, and last nights experience just reinforced why we keep coming back. The restaurant was very very busy ( it usually is) but this in no way affected the prompt service and genuine friendliness of all the staff.we shared a delicious starter of honey chili chicken, then my main course was my favourite lamb maladair. My partner had a chicken curry (she’s a plain eater lol) . Both dishes absolutely delicious. I really won’t go anywhere else now.

We decided to order a carry-out for delivery, rather than eat in the restaurant, which was probably a mistake. The person who took our order over the phone didn’t seem to understand the menu, mispronounced or confused almost every item, and still got it wrong when reading back the list. Nevertheless, it all arrived. The starters that we ordered (onion bhaji and veg pakora) were barely lukewarm on arrival, but were nice all the same. For mains we took the vegetarian korma and palak paneer, which were both very tasty, plus the tarka daal, which was too bland for our taste. The peshwari naan had not travelled well, and seemed leathery: I was a bit put off by the unnecessary red colouring of the filling, which was dry and sparse. For eat-in this would probably have been a very nice meal.

I ordered fish and chips because the rest of my family enjoy Indian cuisine. It was honestly the worst. It was a half plate of chips and a frozen over cooked bit of fish. It was served on a small plate with no trimmings such as salad lemon or anything else. I left it because it wasn't good. Never again

Wow! What a fantastic meal. The team at Motherland spice were friendly and attentive. Our party of 4 was seated immediately even though the restaurant was busy. The waitress ensured our drink order was taken quickly and returned with drinks within 5 min's whilst we reviewed the menu. The entire meal from entre through to mains was superb, we choose to order a selection and then share, which gave us a good taste of many dishes on the menu.

My husband and I and another couple visited Motherland Spice and had a mixed experience. The food was 10/10, absolutely no complaints there. Quick service, hot food, and our table waitresses were so lovely and attentive. The atmosphere was good it was a busy Saturday night and we were sat at a booth which was plenty room. The experience had a severe dampener put on it by a particular member of staff, she was older, hair in a pony tail, with a serious attitude problem. We walked in (my friends had booked the table) and we stated we were in for a booking for 4, we were asked to sit and wait (no problem with that at all) but we were under the impression she had asked us to sit as she believed we were a walk in, so my friend simply stated “we have a table booked”. Well, the condescending, rude, patronising tone in which she spoke has no place in a hospitality environment. Her attitude was absolutely shocking and quite frankly, as a first time visitor to Motherland Spice, I was very disappointed. Hope she’s not there when I return.
