Imagine staying in an inn that dates back to 1650. This was a wonderful and memorable stay with a super staff. The room was spacious and comfortable with a great pub and restaurant right down the stairs. The food was absolutely delicious and it was...fun to try some of the hard ciders I had never heard about. Every morning breakfast was included and though my husband and I have traveled extensively and stayed in a lot of hotels, we have never experienced a breakfast like this in any hotel we have stayed at. There were so many choices to choose from all freshly made. It included specialty coffees. On Saturday there is an open air market right outside of the pub with homemade foods, bakery goods and crafts. During the week there is a daily market as well that includes vendors that aren’t there on Saturday. The pub is located near Blickling Estates the birthplace of Anne Boleyn. The village of Aylsham is quaint and lovely. Make sure not to miss it!More

Myself and some very old student pals stayed for 3 nights. My room was very pleasant. We had a hearty breakfast each morning . The full English was very generous in size. We stayed for dinner each night. The menu is very wide ranging and...plentiful. Two meals I would pick out were the steak and kidney suet pudding and the fish and chips. The fish was gigantic and so tasty. The suet pudding was packed with meat. They have a really good choice of real ales. Aylsham is a lovely town. It is so quiet. There was very little in the way of traffic. The staff at the Black Boys were very helpful and accommodating. Well done Matt and his staff. We had a wonderful stay.More

Not visited this Colchester Inns establishment before ... it wasn't busy on the Tuesday lunchtime when we rocked up. We were presented with 3 menus (main, specials, lunchtime) which had a vast array of food choice, all the dishes sounding lovely. I went for the...Korean bbq chicken tacos. Expecting one small taco, the plate arrived with three tacos, bursting with goodness. The whole dish was extremely tasty and only cost £13. Bargain. Will definitely return to try more of the excellent food here.More

My wife and I make a point of having lunch here every time we visit Norfolk from Nottingham. The service and food quality are top notch and very generous too. Thank you very much.

We visited at 5pm on a Saturday with two children under 8 and no reservation after a long day on the Norfolk broads acting like tourists despite only coming from Suffolk. Seated quickly and told had two hours until they needed the table back. High...quality, fresh food well prepared. Exactly what a good pub should be. Plenty of good quality choices for the children. Friendly, efficient service. Honestly cannot fault a thing. Highly recommend.More

We actually went here twice, once for a Sunday roast and once during the week. The roast was ok, but we felt the potatoes were reheated and the stuffing was congealed. The midweek meal was better and the portions were large. The service was good...enough, considering it was a pub and quite busy. We thought the pub was a bit dark and could do with some tlc , but we’ve been in worse places.More

Absolutely delicious Sunday roast. Very busy pub yet the staff cope brilliantly, remaining efficient & friendly despite being rushed off their feet. The roast was so tasty & the desserts were also amazing. Extensive menu, generous portions & reasonably priced. Good atmosphere & very comfortable...chairs. Very clean pub. Highly recommend.More

So, we stopped in on a family recommendation. The fish and chips are probably the best I’ve had. My wife had the baked crab thermidor and raved over it and the salad. They serve full bottles of wine, a full bar, and soft drinks. The...friendly and helpful staff can be a little slow with service, but they make up for it with a smile and cheer.More

I love this place. It has lots of character, serves food all day, and the staff are very attentive. I have gone off scampi because of the revolting little bits of reconstituted pink stuff with a breaded horror show that is an excuse for the...batter, but this was king prawns in a beer batter, which arrived with a huge portion of chips, a nicely dressed salad and garden peas. It appeared to arrive piping hot in microseconds. I was very impressed, wish it was nearer, and would go there often. 1 small mark down the Guinness was good but too cold and there was quite a limited choice of real ales for such a busy pubMore

Lovely meal. The menu offers so much choice! The portion sizes were too big for me but boy did it taste good! I'm just visiting the area, but I wish we had a place like this to eat at back home. Really good value for...money and great staff. Thank you!More

Excellent food and attentive friendly service. Even though the pub was full on Good Friday, the food was lovely and well cooked. I had the liver and bacon, cooked to perfection. My wife loved the halibut. Both were accompanied by a generous portion of vegetables....One slight issue being the prices were high compared to other pubs of a similar high standard.More

Stayed for one night and had dinner too. Room was nice and bed comfy. Dinner was to die for, halibut with lobster sauce. Staff are really friendly a real delight! One criticism is chairs in restaurant a little tired, one fabric one I had was...quite stained. Definitely would return and highly recommend.More

I usually eat at the Colchester Inns other establishments and always had great food. I have eaten here before twice for lunch and once for breakfast during an overnight stay, order taken and served by Matthew that time, faultless! 🙂 The previous breakfast was exceptional,...but this time it was average. My criticism on this occasion:- Sourdough toast wasn’t even slightly warm Beef tomato was just warmed up watery and tasteless. A lack of oil, herbs and especially no sign of grilling. Bacon luke warm. They forgot one of our drinks. You just expect to food to come out very warm at least. The staff mostly seemed ‘youngsters’ and I was ignored upon arrival whilst a local seemed to command both staff members attention. Also saw what appeared to be the chef, my assumption (which may be wrong) is the whole place was run by inexperienced staff early on a Saturday morning. The lad that served was confident and they cleared the table quickly. Hope to give it another chance soon and I will update my review. Reepham station cafe breakfast was betterMore

The Black Boys has got everything right. Good atmosphere, friendly and happy staff (suggesting good management) and excellent food at a reasonable price. If anything portions are too large. Went for breakfast and had Eggs Royale - from their "lighter eating" menu. £11.95 - 2...perfectly cooked poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, large slice of sourdough toast and a massive pile of smoke salmon. My wife asked for a custom breakfast of smashed avocado, tomato, one poached eggs and smoked salmon. Too much for her to finish. Not surprisingly the place is often pretty full and obviously has a number of regulars. What better recommendation?More

There is a car park directly behind the Hotel off Penfold Street and there is also parking in front of the Co-op in the Market Square.
