We visited summer of 2019 and had lovely sandwiches and homemade beef dripping chips. Based on this we returned in 2020 after a walk round ladybower but was disappointed. It was a Sunday mid afternoon, not excessively busy but waited almost an hour for 2 roasts, a burger and a vegetarian pie. Ordered some chips for the table based on previous year’s experience but they were not the same and didn’t taste like they had been cooked in beef dripping. The slice of veg pie was tasty but not worth £12, came with fries and over cooked cold broccoli. The burger got no complaints (barring the long wait) and the beef roasts were just ok. Only 1 sort of potatoes (roasts) a bit of root veg that was tasty but Luke warm, the yorkie looked better than it tasted, not much taste of anything. The 3 slices of roast beef, however, were fantastic, tasty, lean and tender. Last year I would of recommended, this year not so much. Also not impressed the chef blatantly saying they were off to the shop, they did so wearing chefs clothing and then returned to the kitchen to carry on their shift 🤦‍♀️🤔 (I’m in the trade and would not allow our chefs to do this)

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that your visit to our little pub wasn't quite what you expected. I was surprised to see that you felt we had taken our finger off the button, and a little disappointed to find that you had only chose to review my little hotel on your second visit, as apposed to the previous year when you decided that another trip was a definite must. I was not aware that there had been any long waits that day. Like you said yourself, we weren't that busy. I must say, I truly feel that all of our prices for our homemade meals are reasonable and are carefully priced in accordance to their ingredients. We certainly compare with the other surrounding establishments. I can only apologise that our famous beef dripping chips weren't as you previously found them. You are indeed correct, our beef dripping fryer had blown an internal fuse two nights previous. As a restaurateur who has lost a kitchen to a deep fat fire, you can forgive me for not taking the chance. Rest assured, the classic chips that make The Old Hall stand out from the crowd are back and aren't going anywhere any time soon. I'm sorry that you missed them. Who knows, maybe there'l be a third visit? You are correct, our roast dinners come with freshly roasted potatoes, unless you request an addition of our creamy mashed potato to accompany them. It's a shame you didn't point out in your review that our chef has a jacket on the hook by the door. You might remember, it was a blisteringly cold when you visited. I'd have been quite impressed if he had of chosen that weekend to break the habit of a lifetime and gone to the shop without it. All in all, thank you for your feedback. There is some good points that I will make sure are taken note of, and a couple that I might just blow a social distancing raspberry at. I hope that you can give us another go soon. Rick

After a long walk at Mam Tor, four of us were in need of some lunch and noticed this venue doing takeaway food. The gentleman serving us was really happy, chatty and helpful. Providing and suggesting alternative options for dietary requirements within our group. The menu was rather large considering the current pandemic (Covid) and we were all really happy with the food - very tasty and prepared quickly for a reasonable price. Happy Cutomers!

Stopped here for the first time for lunch following a dales walk. Welcome and service was excellent, although had to wait some time for our meal, but that's not always a bad thing. My wife had the Rump Steak and I had the Bacon Ciabatta, total cost £23.50, so good value. My Ciabatta was stuffed full of Bacon and shed loads of fries. Unfortunately my wife's steak was not as good, hence the 3 rating. This may be a little unfair, but the steak was overcooked - more well-done rather than requested medium, and she was not certain if the fires were oven chips. Bit of a shame, as a good atmosphere and great staff, maybe a one-off. Will give it another chance when next up there.

Hello. Thank you for your great feedback. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to our little pub. I'm sorry to hear that your steak was over done. I have forwarded your feedback onto our kitchen team. You must always let us know if ever something isn't quite right, we're always happy to take criticism, and we can usually sort something out for you. I can assure your wife that we definitely don't use "oven chips". Oven chips tend to take 20 minuets to cook, and are an extremely expensive option. In fairness, I haven't ever heard that they are even an option in a commercial kitchen at all. Can you imagine trying to cook 300 portions of chips in an oven? What size oven would you use? It's a good few years that I had oven chips, but in my childhood, I seem to remember them either burnt to a crisp or like miserable little anaemic torpedoes that had to be doused in ketchup in order to dodge the taste buds. Recently we have had to replace our beef dripping fryer that we usually cook our chips in, so they have been cooked in vegetable oil for a week or so. We are now back to our usual beef dripping chips that we get such good feedback on. Thank you again for your feedback. I look forward to seeing you again next time. Rick

We went on a hike in Edale and after a long day we decided to sit outside for some drinks and almost all of us ordered foods and drinks, in fact 10/11 of us ordered either drinks, sides or a main meal. When we went to pay our waiter was behind the till and told us all that we were RUDE for not all ordering food and should really think about how we’ve treated this place, but bearing in mind there were couples sat around with just a drink and then left without any hassle. It was one of the female staff with short hair. The staff then never came to see us once our meals came to the table to see if we needed anything or to clear plates at any point (no it wasn’t very busy at the time.) Will not be coming back, poor. Also they didn’t trust us because we are a small group of boys, so made us pay before we drank our drinks or received our food. Have never been told that we are rude before in a pub/restaurant, especially when we did nothing wrong!

Hello again. As this is your forth attempt at constructing a negative review on social media regarding your visit the other day, it is also my 4th reply. Needless to say it is becoming tiresome. So rather than writing a full blown story as my reply shooting down each point in order as usual, here are a few simple facts that you all keep forgetting. Anything for a bit of a break from this new routine. No. 1. With COVID regulations, YOU CANNOT have a group of more than 6 inside, hence the attempt at moving you outside (but then again, we had already pointed this out to the organiser who booked for 9 dinners). No. 2. YOU CANNOT have more than two households on one table inside (and now outside too). No.3. IT IS ILLEGAL to serve alcohol to a person under the age of 18. No if's, but's, even if you are dining. I am well aware that some of your party were 17, and some people did fail an ID check. No.4. A glass of tap water is not a soft drink. This is especially irritating when you had booked for diners (most of which turned out to be a bowl of chips). And No. 5 . EVERYONE pays upfront for their meals when sat outside. Your entire group wanted to pay individually. This is not a problem at all, but it does take a long time, and explains why you had to pay at the tearooms counter (those who weren't just drinking water that is). As previously pointed out, the girl serving you ("with short hair") is only 2 to 3 years older than you are. If she didn't treat you with the upmost respect, it was not because you were the same age as her. It was much more likely to be because you were all a bit arsey. I would usually give you the benefit of the doubt, but judging from the bombardment of reviews via social media, I'll have to stick with her. Thank you for yet another review. Rick

Called in to the Tea Rooms just for a coffee and a tea cake which incidentally were good but I was slightly put off by the lack of hygiene. The waitress, when I arrived, was dealing with a customer’s bill and handling money plus credit/debit cards. She then proceeded, with no interlude to wash her hands, to take my order. On the way back to the kitchen she grabbed my tea cake from the cake stand and proceeded to hold it in the same hand as her notebook and pen. I do think that gloves should be worn when handling food after handling money especially as we are currently being told by the government in light of the coronavirus to wash hands to stop the spread. A shame because the coffee and tea cake were good.

Hello. Thank you for your feedback. We completely agree that hygiene should not be taken lightly, especially during these difficult times. This is why you will notice that all of our tea cakes and scones have always been individually wrapped in clingfilm. When toasted, the tea cake is collected from the toaster using metal tongs. At no point do are staff touch any food outside of the kitchen. Our tea rooms staff only handle the cling film. Thank you again. I hope this puts your mind at rest. I hope to see you again soon. Rick

How you've got so many good reviews beats me! I ordered a pint of coke, I was advised it was Pepsi, which is fine.. I like Pepsi, but whatever is in the bag and box, isn't Pepsi, it tastes like a cheap 17p a bottle value cola! That aside, we ordered food, pricey menu but there's no costing for quality. The food took about 45 mins to come to our table and we were so underwhelmed, a burger which was no bigger than a mcdonalds 99p cheese burger, slaw in a tiny dish, and fries which were hard and dry. My friend ordered a chicken dish, it was a large children's sized meal which was served, barely enough to feed a 6ft3.grown man.

Hi Neil. How's Bryan? I'm starting to feel connected to you both in some way. Well, Its simple. Good traditional homemade food and award winning beers served all day by a fantastic team. I hope this answers your question. Like the rest of our draught products, we are tied to Star Pubs and Bars for our bag in box mixers. I couldn't buy a cheaper product even if I wanted to. I'm fairly certain you wouldn't have waited for 45 minuets for your meal in the day time, and if you did, then I guarantee that it was rectified by a member of our team. Our locally made hamburgers are 6oz, and thanks to Google, I can tell you that a McDonald's patty is 45 to 90 grams. Even if you had been given one of the kids burgers that we did years ago (4oz), you'd still be well out with this silly statement. You could have easily ordered some more of our homemade coleslaw when our team did their check back if you liked it that much. I don't know which chicken dish you had as it could easily been off the specials board. I do wish you had have made us aware of any issues that you had whilst you were here. It might surprise you to know that we actually aim to please. We don't just ask to be polite. Thank you for your feedback. It's just a shame you chose to do it once you got home. Rick

We came for dinner, taking advantage of 50% Gov scheme. Calling first to booked a table securing our evening went smooth. On arrival ( 10 mins early we )were seated straight away, Drinks were served promptly.. The food was a tad longer than normal, but given the new scheme, we knew it was ultra busy. The venue was full to capacity with tables spaced out well. Ours was really private. On arrival the owner was very welcoming and chatty and took our drink order. Our food arrived approx 25mins after we placed the order. I had Salmon, my hubby had a rump steak all cooked and prepared wonderfully. Sadly their steak and ale pie was sold out. All in all wonderful food and great atmosphere. Recommended!

Burns night weekend. Me and my family stayed overnight for the burns night supper which was absolutely brilliant! Great atmosphere and great food. We got up late so ended decided to relax with a coffee and have lunch instead of breakfast. Great decision as lunch was excellent! Roast beef Sunday lunch for my wife, and a steak burger for myself, pizza off the child’s menu for my daughter. All perfect

Visited this pub for the first time recently with my wife and another couple. The food was dreadful and when we complained to the waitress (tall, reddish hair, manic) she was rude and dismissive. I see from other recent reviews that we are not the first customers to have had cause to complain about the food and service at this pub recently. I also see that the manager’s default response to poor reviews is to be rude to the customer’s leaving the review. An interesting approach to customer service! He appears to claim that everyone else is happy with the food, yet a quick check reveals that the pub is rated a lowly 6th out of 8 places to eat in Hope. Clearly customers are not that happy. We won’t be rushing back as there are much nicer places to eat nearby.

Hello. Thank you for taking the time to send your feedback (I use this term loosely). I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but I just couldn't be bothered. It's proving quite difficult helping to rebuild our economy after having to close for two years in order to keep you lot safe. I understand what your saying, but what you aren't seeing from my replies, is that I only shoot down the ones with sweeping statements and no factual information whatsoever. Things like, "the food was dreadful"! What was dreadful? What was wrong? What did you order? Was it overcooked? Undercooked? Cold? Come on, give us a clue. What am I supposed to say? The waitress working hard to look after you and your fellow customers was one of three, all are senior members of the team and have done the job for more that 5 years each, two were trained by well known premium restaurant chains, and the other, a hostess in first class. By "manic", I assume you mean fun and clearly enjoying their job. I understand that this maybe unusual to you, but its actually a good thing. It's not a denial thing in any way about me questioning weather she was rude or not, it's simply a case of not believing you. I can confirm that I am most certainly the only rude person here, and to be fair, even I take some pushing. I assume from all of your sweeping statements and no actual information, that (like so many before you) you complained about your food, couldn't prove anything wrong, and therefor weren't given your usual discount or free meal that you would get from a dodgy chain pub or managed house. That I can believe. I'm very fortunate when it comes to Trip Advisor and other review sites, because they simply don't effect me, my team or my business. I have been here for 12 years and our hard work, fair prices, great team and high quality food now has a following that spreads all over Great Britain and further. I can safely say that if anyone read a review and was left with the opinion that they didn't want to come and see why we're still here and breaking records even after all these years, then they simply wouldn't fit in. As long as strangers keep coming up to me and shaking my hand for my replies, I will most certainly continue. Please feel free to check out my other establishments that you shouldn't be in any rush to visit as well. Rick

Hello. I'm sorry that our coffee machine picked that day of your visit to be the day that it broke down. I can assure you that this was not our plan. I believe that the evil coffee vending fairy was completely to blame. I can only imagine that you must have upset him in some way. I am also sorry that you did not enjoy our freshly brewed coffee from our cafetiere. We do not toast our teacakes from frozen. There's a big warning sign on the toaster, so I assume that it must be hazardous in some way. Thank you for your review. I am sorry that such a silly problem has put you off returning. I hope you can reconsider. Rick

We have been here several times, but this time was for my dad's birthday. The food was delicious as always, with very generous portions, delicious flavours and everything cooked just right. The staff are always very helpful, maybe a little bit slower than usual due to the covid restrictions, but overall very good. They check the table lots, make sure you are ok for drinks, and are very good when helping with the gluten free options for a coeliac. We will be returning soon, it's a great local pub!

We pre-booked a table for tea-time & was given our choice of where to sit, so we chose a table in sunlight. The waitress who showed us to our table was very helpful & took our drinks order & brought menus, before her shift ended. Sadly, we seemed to be a little forgotten as the few staff that were on duty, although very pleasant, needed a real shout before we got their attention. Probably as they were trying to deal with two separate areas, the inside & the outside. Anyway, the food was very good & all three of us enjoyed it.

Hello. Thank you ever so much. That's some very good feedback. It has been very difficult with these ever changing restrictions, and it does seem to take rather a lot of people to staff such a large area. We're currently just taking each day as they come, looking forward to when people can once again order at the bar. Thank you again. Rick

There was rubbish right outside next to the entrance door which smelled terrible and the smell stayed inside. I payed a cleaning fee which apparently took 5 hours yet once we got there the house smelled and was dusty as seen in pictures. There was spiders and spider webs in every room and bathroom as if no one has cleaned for a while. The plates were dirty, the boiler leaked the 7 days we were there and the kids that were playing in the garden got told off at midday that they were being “too noisy”. We also found spiders in the bedding as shown which meant we had to wash everything and clean the whole house and purchase a hoover as it was disgusting and filthy. She has also held the deposit of apparently having a party which did not go with COVID rules. There was 9 of us she knew it was a big family with kids how are we not meant to make noise . Worst experience I’ve had and never going again and has also not answer any of our email and faced us which will most likely mean we will not be getting our money back.

I went here on Friday 27th August, despite there being a beer festival over the bank holiday & the pub being full of hungry diners. I had an outstanding meal, a No Death Burger which was perfection, the fries were out of this world & the burger was one of the best i have had out. I had a Chocolate cake for pudding, which was just brilliant. My fellow diner had a southern fried chicken burger, which she said was beautiful & was served just liked she asked. The Staff were very nice & they were always happy to help, which is just want you want in pub. I hope they have a successful beer festival & get back some money lost due to lockdown. I will definitely be coming back to try their Mediterranean vegetable and feta cheese flatbread. Despite all the bad reviews i have read on here, the service & food was sensational.
