A small but inviting dining area, with walls bedecked with lovely original art. The food was excellent - we went for set menu and it was freshly cooked, delicious and represents good value. The owner and chef Colin is a good laugh - be prepared...for good banter when he comes out of the kitchen! It is often booked up weeks ahead - so plan and book in advance.More

This was an evening meal for a special occasion and we were not disappointed. The food was well cooked, delicious and plentiful. The is a range of choice and also a set menu The restaurant, as the name suggests, is an historic building and very...atmospheric. Loved the food and the experience I am happy to recommend this place but it is important to pre-bookMore

I read about this place in the local paper and decided we must try it out as it had some good and bad reviews. The moment we walked in we were met by the chefs wife who was lovely and friendly and took us too...our table. The decor reminded me of an old school but we didn’t go to admire this it was the food that we went for and this was amazing. Colin the owner and chef is a funny old man but wow can he cook and this obviously is his passion and we didn’t mind but he does come out the kitchen a lot and has a conversation with you about his past life we found this quite amusing but I can see why others get offended. We did find that being asked to leave the dining room at 9am a bit strange as the waitresses needed to get it ready for morning breakfast for the guests and was told we could sit at the bar lounge for drinks which we did indeed. This is a place to eat as the food is delicious but don’t go if you are looking for a romantic night out as it’s not like that it’s more Basil n polly, Sybil but just missing Manuel but definitely worth a visit to taste the foodMore

My sisters and I stayed here as we were going to a concert in Sandringham. I have to say it was the best decision we made,as the hosts Colin & Sarah were so welcoming, as were the rest of the staff working there. The evening...meal was outstanding and so was the breakfast. The rooms were very comfortable and everything you would need. We would most definitely return.More

A lovely fish restaurant. It is intimate and small, run by an owner who is obviously passionate about his food. We were spoiled for choice from the menu. (The special starter for smoked fish was beautiful) Recommended.

My husband and I dined here with our 11 year old daughter. Colin and his team were absolutely charming and we loved the fact that he popped out of the kitchen to meet each of his guests and ask us how we were enjoying our...food. Our daughter tried oysters for the first time and enjoyed the swordfish. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our food too and we were very grateful for the homemade bread to soak up the delicious lobster sauce. We just about managed to squeeze in desserts, which were equally delicious. If you are expecting a dining experience akin to every other chain restaurant with the identikit menu, this probably isn't the restaurant for you. However, if you enjoy fish and seafood that has been cooked to perfection and a unique experience The Old Forge is most definitely worth a visit We will be returning and cannot recommend highly enough.More

This is such a wonderful restaurant. The owner and his family couldn’t be more welcoming and the food is second to none. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by name and presented with a lovely house wine, olives and home made fresh bread....For a starter we had oysters which were the freshest we’ve ever tasted and the chef even cooked a couple of snails for my partner to try. The swordfish was cooked perfectly. We had profiteroles for desert which were very light. The service, food and whole experience was excellent. Would highly recommend. Do book, as we only just managed to get a table.More

I drove my elderly mum quite a distance to eat here but it was a total disaster. On arrival we were welcomed by the charming Sarah and shown to our table. Our food was very variable (homemade bread dry and crumbly, for example) but it...was the overbearing and offensive presence of Colin that totally ruined our meal. During my main course, Colin was regaling diners at full volume about the operation he has had for a bovine implant, not appropriate and rather unpleasant. When one couple left, Colin bemoaned loudly the appalling way children behave these days and said ‘what a shame we can’t use the cane any more’. Talk about offensive. He came over when we’d finished our mains and asked about our meals. When I said pleasantly that I’d found half my scallop (you only get one) a little chewy (it was still on my plate) he said that I would be the ‘sort of person who would leave a one star review’ but that he didn’t care because he’s 73 and doesn’t need to do this anymore. He kept coming over and was very intrusive during our meal, loud and overbearing, he seemed to have no idea how to interact socially. On leaving, I decided to have a quiet word privately with Sarah, who seemed very amenable and approachable, as I was appalled by Colin’s behaviour. I only got as far as saying very quietly to her ‘please could you pass on to Colin that I don’t really appreciate coming out for a meal and being insulted’ and he was there, ranting and raving like a mad man. He even slammed the door behind us when we left. If he told us once that he is 73 and doesn’t need to do this any more (with a dismissive shrug) he must have told us 3 times. So my suggestion to Colin is that he just stops now and saves people like me (and you) from a thoroughly unpleasant and expensive experience. It was all I could do not to cry on the journey home. Don’t book here.More

Food just awful. Bread was ok. No taste to anything else except burnt garlic on occasions. The restaurant was freezing, seats rock hard and uncomfortable. Sarah was attentive. Set meal may have been better value but the a la carte was over priced. The mussels...were tough and like rubber, very difficult to chew. None of the seafood looked or tasted fresh. We had looked forward to the meal and visit so much yet could not have be more disappointed. The whole experience was just terrible and we left feeling ripped off, creeped out by Colin and hungry! Avoid and go further afield to eat would be our suggestion!More

I stayed here with my wife for a couple of days and it was lovely. We were 5 minutes away from the Thurston Christmas extravaganza so ideally situated for that. I must agree with previous comments regarding Colin’s hospitality which came across as warming and...so genuine. Our room was lovely and warm upon arrival and very clean. The sea bass in lobster sauce was to die for and so was the cherry crumble stuffed with whole cherries. Reading through some of these awful negative comments regarding The Old Forge, are you sure you actually came here ?? Overall, our stay here was a lovely experience. Thanks Colin and hope to see you again next year.More

We booked the Old Forge based on the positive feedback for a pre Thurston Xmas Spectacular meal. On entry we received a warm welcome. Service was reasonably prompt. Ordered from the main menu not the set. Food was under seasoned and plain. Somewhat dsappointing considering...the reputation that there seems to be. However Colins homemade bread was very nice, although staff cutting the bread at a table in the seating area without wearing hygenic gloves is taking things a bit too far - (just my opinion, but projects positive hygiene image to customers in such times that we are experiencing) We were not the only ones that were disappointed.More

Can’t praise this restaurant highly enough. Met the lovely host Colin a real character very entertaining. The food was absolutely superb and what a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy it in. Definitely coming back for more. A comprehensive selection on the menu and the host even...makes his own bread. We’ll be back.More

I believe the restaurant only opens in the evenings, but not Mondays. I do not know if they allow dogs there.
