Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The food is lovely, served up quickly with plenty of choice. Price is reasonable. Unfortunately, one staff member, who we took to be the manager, was extremely rude and abrupt. The young waitress was the saving grace.... polite and courteous. Atmosphere zero.... nobody else in...restaurant, except us, and no background music. Won't be returning.More

This restaurant appears very 'Parisian' from the outside and inside it has an intimate feel so would be nice for couples. They were very welcoming of families too. We went for the Sunday special where you get a discount on two/three courses. It was a...bank holiday Sunday and the lady that worked there looked a little rushed/distracted but she'd probably had a long busy day and probably isn't normally like this. There is a good variety to choose from the menu and our children devoured their meals. I had the sea bass main and rhubarb crumble for dessert. The mains were huge, fantastic portions! I enjoyed all the trimmings. The ginger overpowered the crumble slightly but that's my only slight criticism of the food. The wine we had was lovely! If in Dalton again we'd definitely go back to Hartley's.More

We visited our old favourite Hartley’s again this evening for only the second time in 2023. We always have a lovely time here but we are guilty sometimes of forgetting just how good the food is! To put it into context we have become “foodies”...over the last few years having been spoiled by annual trips to France and a few Michelin Star experiences in the UK. Tonight we went back to the fabulous friendly and laid back experience that epitomises our favourite local restaurant, Hartley’s. From the minute we walked in, it was the usual friendly welcome and banter and wow was the food “on point”. Mrs D had the bruschetta freeing me to have the Squid and both were fabulous. Let’s be honest I don’t really like salad, but the one they do with the squid I could happily just eat on its own and with the pickle it so complements the subtle taste of the squid. For mains I had the sublimely balanced gammon with cream sauce, poached egg potatoes and cabbage. How well each element complements one another, The better half enjoyed the Seabass, which from my shared forkful was equally lovely. I had the delicate rhubarb and ginger crumble for pud while the missus had STP. All washed down with a lovely Chilean Merlot! What a fabulous evening! I said to JD “sometimes we do forget just how good this place is” 5 stars tonight only because I couldn’t give 6!More

A most unassuming but established restaurant, serving probably best described as pub style dishes, which is an absolute disservice. They take classics and just make them amazing, quite simply. It has been a while since such a good experience, and whilst the food was just...epic, along with seriously plenty of it without any detraction from quality, the lady owner/manageress just made it. She was truly brilliant and just made going out what it should all be about: sheer enjoyment in every way. Thank you so much, you know who you are if you read this! Can't wait to return and urge you to visit and support this fantastic independent restaurant.More

My husband & sister ordered a flat white coffee whilst looking at the menu, they were asked “hot or cold milk” which all four of us thought strange, when the coffee came it was a cup of black coffee with a jug of hot milk....We have had flat whites in many cafes , this was a first. They both said it was an ordinary instant coffee, for this reason I have not given the full 5*. The food was very good & service was friendly.More

I managed to get a last minute early evening booking for 5.30pm. I found it on Tripadvisor and liked the positive reviews. I had been looking for a restaurant in Barrow, but this looked and sounded very good. It turnout to be a a great...choice. We were not disappointed, in fact we thoroughly enjoyed the food, drink and service. The Swan Blonde Beer was superb, followed by Beef Stroganoff with half rice and half chips and a side Garlic Bread. It was delicious and served piping hot on pre heated plates. The chunky chips were one of the best I’d had in a long time. Our female server was quite funny with some of her comments and was very personable. Back ground music was spot on, not loud and heavy but pleasant. Everything complemented each other and made a great start to our evening. There is on street parking or there is a Co-op with car park opposite Hartley’sMore

My wife and I had been walking on the sands and dunes at Seascale Haws. It was Sunday September 18th and we were keen to find somewhere for lunch. We drove into Dalton-in-Furness hoping to find a decent pub that serves food but I spotted...the board outside Hartley's so went inside. Luckily there was just one spare table. We enjoyed a heart Sunday lunch followed by homemade desserts in a pleasant environment with attentive staff. The roasted potatoes were okay but not as good as my own. I think they were frozen ones. The rest of the meal appeared to have been cooked from scratch and at £15 pp for two courses we thought it was great value for money.More

Once again we left the restaurant with full bellies, can’t rate the food high enough. As for the service hmm! Cathrine our waitress for the meal was exceptional as she was for our first meal last Sunday. Down to earth salt of the earth northern...lass, Cathrine you made our night just like the ladies at the other table really enjoying themselves. If we ever come back to Dalton or anywhere near we guarantee we’ll be back. From one Manc to another take care and keep up the good work. The bill is in the post for my new clothes because of the big portions you serve lol You’re a beaut xMore

Family get together and first time for me eating in Hartleys but certainly not the last, the staff were extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food and beverages were wonderful, we all ate different items from the menu and it all arrived at the table...together which for me is the sign of a well run establishment. I would have no hesitation in recommending Hartleys to anyone. We will definitely visit again next time we are in Dalton.More

The food was excellent and plentiful. The manager was a wonderful host, making us feel welcome. The service was very quick. If we lived local it would become our regular eat out place. Very reasonably priced.

Lady who served us made us feel very unwelcome and didn't have a nice manner when speaking to us. Made us feel extremely uncomforable when waiting to be seated, ordering food and drinks. Plonked our cutlery done and wasn't attentive at all. It's a real...shame as food has always been amazing but completely let down by service. We have been twice both times service poor, 2nd time we went we gave it another chance due to food but would now never return again due to a similar experience. My Father and Mother in Law went at the weekend 22/01/22 and described the same serviced recieved from the older lady. They where also dissappointed with the food which is a shame. Wouldn't recommend and won't be spending our money here again.More

Every time we visit Hartleys we always say we should go more often. We went on a Friday lunchtime, as usual the food and service was fantastic, absolutely faultless. Both waitresses were really friendly and was so impressed that one actually remembered us from our...previous visit practically a year ago to the day she even remembered where we sat, just hope she remembered it for the right reasons 😀 Definitely worth a visit 10/10More
