Rental Price Dropped After Paying – Any Recourse?

We booked and paid for a home rental, arrived to find out the price has dropped, any recourse?

We have a question and thought we'd post here to invite feedback on how best to proceed. We are in a vacation home rental in Kauai, HI which we booked last year through a reputable listing service based out of Oahu that guarantees the lowest price and that is one of the reasons we chose to go with them. Upon arriving, the local managing agent has a flier for the house out front which lists the rental price 30% below what we are paying. It's a sizable amount and comes as a bit of a shock. Before we booked, the price we paid was the price listed with several different vacation rental agencies. We believe that the price was reduced in the year since we booked. We don't know whether to address this with the local agent here in Kauai or the listing service on Kauai. Has anyone faced this before? We feel penalized for planning and committing ahead of time rather than waiting until the last minute. When it comes to vacation rentals, is it like the airlines that honor price drops, or are we just out of luck? We have paid in full. Do we address this with the local manager (who has been our only contact since arriving) or the Oahu listing agent? Unfortunately, our contract with the listing agent is on our home computer rather than the laptop we have with us. We'd like to know if anyone has experience to offer us on how to proceed with this. Thank you in advance!

I very much doubt you have an recourse as the price you saw with the local agent is quite possibly a late availability price.

To be honest I really don't understand the mentality of those who expect a refund when prices change after a purchase - whatever the purchase is. I'm assuming of course that they wouldn't pay up happily if a vendor came along, months after they had made a purchase, demanding more money because prices had increased.

I assume you have a copy of the flier. Your best bet is to consult with your original booking agent, and to forward them a copy of the flier. They might, or might not respond with some sort of remuneration.

My guess is that you pay the price for securing the property and dates you want long in advance. They will argue that the lower rate is available only to last minute bookings of less desirable weeks. Also, booking long distance through an internet agency is often more expensive than booking directly with the homeowner or with the local agent on site.

Good luck!

How many times have you purchased shoes only to go back to the store a few months later and they are half price. Same thing with rentals, unsold inventory is priced attractively so that unsold weeks can be occupied. You were able to get the time of your choosing by booking a year in advance, had you waited you might have gotten a lower price but perhaps not your desired dates. Make sense?

To add to the above snippet...you could have waited and booked at a lower price...you may not have gotten your desired dates OR your desired rental.

FYI-many airlines have even changed the way they handle price drops now. They now give you the lesser price after they charge you a "change" fee.

My suggestion to your rental situation, nicely tell the agent you've noticed a price drop. Perhaps s/he could comp you a meal out, a shopping card, a round of golf, etc.

Another thing to keep in mind, repeat rental guests sometimes get discounts on subsequent visits--kind of like a frequent renters card;-)
