Ah, but which was the first commercial airliner to break the sound barrier?

Alas, I never made it on one. They used to fly from Filton to London and back, with a champers lunch for around 400 quid. Steep, but worth it I bet.

The Evening Post had a splendid picture of one taken over the Suspension Bridge, making its final flight back to Filton.

Passenger airline?

Is it a trick question? :-)

I know a DC-8 did it about 20 years after the first jet, and DC was a passenger airline. I'm not sure if it was taking passengers at the time? I think not:-)

I just posted the O.P. for thoughts on Concorde, time passes but it's one of the few areas of science that we appear to be going backwards, speed of passenger flights I mean

I actually used the words "commercial airliner", which I did deliberately, and no it didn't carry passengers (and no, it wasn't Concorde, which wouldn't have carried passengers on its first supersonic flight either).

I never flew Concorde (although I flew on many DC-8s) but I remember the excitement of its birth. In the 70s they had a prototype on static display at Le Bourget and I went along to see it. You could go aboard, but the cockpit was glassed off.

Sadly, I think it was a question of not being able to get the techonology right. Flying supersonic came at too many costs, and so it was never going to be viable with the current limitations.

But maybe some day...

__________

I never knew that! I was going to guess the Tupolev TU-144.

My favourite quote about the retirement of Concorde was by Jeremy Clarkson as he stepped off the last JFK-LHR flight in October 2003...'One small step for man, one giant leap back for mankind'.

Personally I only managed the one Concorde flight, LHR-JFK back in 2002. For those interested I re-wrote an account of my trip fairly recently.

I responded "passenger airline?" as a question, as

I could clearly see your wording.

So it was a DC-8 as I thought and probably the

one that broke the barrier was put straigth into passenger service. Doesn't that make it a passenger airline? Anyway, immaterial.

Looks like we are stuck with slower but bigger and bigger and bigger.........

All a bit scary when you see the size of these new 'busses'.

I know, and in answering my intent was to say I didn't mean "in commercial service", for example a plane full of passengers that plunged from a great height by accident.

The DC-8 in question had a long career with CP Air. It was scrapped not long ago, and sadly the plaque which had been put up in the cabin to comemorate the event has gone missing. If anyone knows where it is...
